Power 16
Record
Comment
1. Connecticut
23-1
No one can score inside against Thabeet, who’s blocked 27 shots in his last 4 games.
2. North Carolina
22-2
Erupted for 57 2nd half points to put their rivals away at Cameron.
3. Oklahoma
24-1
Taking full advantage of the lack of elite teams in the Big 12 this year.
4. Pittsburgh
22-2
Defense is the key for the Panthers, who held Da’Sean Butler to 4 points last game.
5. Louisville
18-4
One of the most balanced teams in the country.
6. Clemson
20-3
Responded nicely to the FSU letdown with a good win against BC.
7. Duke
20-4
Coach K after the UNC game: “They’re better than we are.”
8. Villanova
20-4
No longer flying under the radar after spanking Marquette 102-84.
9. Marquette
20-4
Without wins in their next two, things could get rough for the Golden Eagles.
10. UCLA
19-4
Tonight’s game against ASU will show whether or not the Bruins are for real.
11. Memphis
20-3
Not as good as last year, but the Gonzaga blowout shows that they can still compete.
12. Missouri
21-4
Outscored the defending champs 46-30 in the 2nd half to pull out a huge win.
13. Michigan St.
20-4
Winning games with defense (giving up 45 PPG over the last 3).
14. Dayton
22-3
Showed everyone they’re the best in the A-10 with a wire-to-wire win over Xavier.
15. Kansas
19-5
Waved goodbye to an 8-game winning streak with a tough loss to Mizzou.
16. Wake Forest
18-4
Youth and inexperience has finally caught up with them.

Honorable Mentions

Butler (21-2) – A close game with Wright St. after a loss to GB suggests they’re not as good as their record.

Xavier (20-4) – “Better focus on Duquesne rather than that game on Feb. 11th” – Last week’s Power 16.

Utah State (23-1) – Could make the Top 16 if they beat just one good opponent.

LSU (20-4) – The best record in the SEC, which isn’t saying much this year.

This Week’s Match-ups to Watch:

Saturday, 2/14: #25 Florida St. @ #7 Wake Forest – Can Wake Forest turn it around against an FSU team that beat Clemson and took UNC to the final buzzer?

Sunday, 2/15: #3 North Carolina @ Miami – Lawson has struggled against top-flight guards, and McClinton has been unconscious lately.

Monday, 2/16: #4 Pittsburgh @ #1 Connecticut – GAME OF THE WEEK

Tuesday, 2/17: #9 Michigan St. @ #20 Purdue – Hummel, Moore, & Co. look to rebound after a tough stretch against a defensive Spartan team.

clemson, mizzou, dayton

i understand you need to have these teams ranked highly based on their records. but do you or anyone really believe these teams will make it past the sweet 16 in the tournament? obviously we do not know what the match ups will be but in my mind there is no way these teams would beat teams like arizona st, purdue, washington, ohio state, georgetown, or texas come march.
