provides the hope, inspiration and the courage to act against our own racisms.
Racism
A basketball coach in Spain, in relating to the press and the circumstances of
his latest defeat, implied that his African American player, compared to his Caucasian,
American player, as lazy and the difference “between night and day” or as “the
difference between black and white”.
In another related instance in Spain, NAF was an invented term used publicly by
an ACB coach, Negro Athletic Fraud is the translation. Shameful and f*+*ked up.
Speak out against racism in all its forms.
Is Professional Basketball a sport?
Just wondering, so I checked and here’s what “sport” is defined as in www.dictionary.com:
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive
nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting,
fishing, etc. No mention of ANY basketball, just an etc.
2. a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors. Nope.
3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime Nope, that’s not professional.
4. jest; fun; mirth; pleasantry: What he said in sport was taken seriously. Nope.
5. mockery; ridicule; derision: They made sport of him. Nope.
6. an object of derision; laughingstock. Nope.
7. something treated lightly or tossed about like a plaything. Never could be
the NBA.
8. something or someone subject to the whims or vicissitudes of fate, circumstances,
etc. Some are.
9. a sportsman. Some are.
10. Informal. a person who behaves in a sportsmanlike, fair, or admirable manner;
an accommodating person: He was a sport and took his defeat well. That’s close.
11. Informal. a person who is interested in sports as an occasion for gambling;
gambler. Fugedaboudit.
12. Informal. a flashy person; one who wears showy clothes, affects smart manners,
pursues pleasurable pastimes, or the like; a bon vivant. Some, but there
will never be another ‘Clyde’ Frazier.
13. Biology. an organism or part that shows an unusual or singular deviation from
the normal or parent type; mutation.
That’s it? A mutation? Well it’s all good.
So here’s the question. How can money earning athletes, players in a team sport
thrive in a Capitalistic society? How can sharing the ball be accomplished when
it means sharing the money, it’s contradictory, no? How do you get these “bread
winners” to pass the ball like a hot potato? to make the “right play”?
It seems that one answer is D’Antoni’s philosophy and his “seven second offense”.
It seems like he’s saying, “Don’t allow too much time to think and more times
than not, the players will make a good decision”. It’s as simple as that.
Another Question
Why do NBA teams as compared to Euro-league teams, by and large, average fewer
players used, or more DNP’s during any given game? Does it have to do with tactical
considerations? To my way of thinking, if the players on the bench are not as
“good” as the “Star’ters, then why can’t they be used differently? Can’t the subs
have a different MO and maybe an objective different than the ones the ‘Star’ters
have? It does stand to reason that, with such a large number of games to be played
in so short a time, “resources” must be maximized. “Benchers” should not have
to clone or play the same ball as the Star’ters... I think it’s counter productive.
The second group, if there is a second group, should not be imitations and they
should contribute as a result of their particular, individual and collective skills.

Related fact
A wise Euro President once told me that in professional sports there is a “Hierarchy
of Importance” in regard to having a successful, winning organization. It was
(is): Club first, Players second and Coach third. The second and third meaning
little if the first one is faulty.
Makes sense to me.

Structure
I have an obvious bias when I talk about the evaluation of Internationals that
play in the ShowTime NBA. I think they are not, in many cases, useful. The hold,
dribble and otherwise stop (freeze) (non) ball circulation which is predominant...
is just not their game. It is not conducive to what they do. Internationals can
flourish in movement, structured, and disciplined systems (like Utah). In this
regard, I submit for your esteemed consideration, Memphis and Portland are opposite
cases and will have to do with the success that Marc Gasol may not have and Rudy
Fernandez may.
Defense
I would like to address this current, modern basketball defensive style of “live
and let live” I submit this argument:
“Defense”, according to The Hen Master Bobby Knight, “is the predisposition to
dominate”.
Now, in most pro bball teams, at the present time, the only predisposition I’m
seeing is: “maintain distances and be ready to call for help”.
The game being marketed and pushed up and down the court these days is all fine
and dandy, but has little to do with a recent time, when individual defense had
a meaning and a place on the court. Nowadays, it’s a rarity when a team is noted
above others for its defense. (Boston, SAS) I mean 90% of players don’t even raise
an arm to defend when the ball is in the High post.
Predisposition translates to: “The space separating any offensive perimeter players
and his defensive counterpart and being relative to the amount of space needed
to identify (and go behind) screens or picks”.
... And is light years away from any celestial body’s “predisposition to dominate”
anything.
So... When Boston wins another NBA title in June 2009, merit will be distributed.
Some will go to Tom T who “installed” two of the Bobby Knight’s five principles
of good team defense.
1. Jump to the ball (direction of pass)
2. Pressure on the player with the ball.
Result?
