Daniel Orton to test the NBA draft
I thought it was funny that Orton's father claimed that there were teams "saying he could go anywhere from 1-20.”
Really, 1-20? I'm pretty sure he won't be within the top five.
I linked the http://www.nbadraft.net/node/19519 Mark Heisler column before the tournament and he had Orton 12th. I wrote it there and I will again, Heisler and Sam Smith are NBA guys. They don't watch college ball, but they have great NBA contacts because they have covered the league forever. It seems crazy that a guy who barely saw the floor could go top twenty, but I can believe Orton's father has a reasonably credible source saying his son could go pretty high.
yeah ive seen them say things liek that for a couple of players who ended up going second round. maybe he will raise his stock with workouts but i dont see it because he is so raw on offense right now. his hands arent the best and his foot work is pretty bad. what he has going though is shot blocking and age but he would foul out before he ever gets to stay in the game long enough. if he stays expect him to spend some time in the d leauge
Get either Shelby or Knight, maybe add Leslie, combine that with a possible title run and Orton goes top 5 next year and will have a longer NBA career.
I think Orton is making a ok move. Test the waters at least. Get inside the scouts head a year early.
I believe he should return as well, he could be the #1 pick in 2011. Plus, I expect him to be in that range because he will be 2 years off of surgery, becoming the main post option on a team and he will be in what looks like a "weak" draft
before workouts he would probably go late first off of potential.. if he doesnt do well in workouts(whihc i dont think he will) then second round is a very real possibility
No matter what he does I think a team like LA or ATL would never turn down the chance to get a prospect like this.
blazerfan 7....I guess you don't understand.
The man potential is up there. Had he left UK for another school he would have been a top 10 pick this year. You're telling me that a guy who most people with 2011 mocks have him in the top 10-Top 5 goes undrafted? Come on man...
naw he wouldnt have been top 10 pick this year though if he went to another school.. is offense is wayyyy raw and hes a worst prospect then deandre jordan was. because of that..neither had anything reliable other then under the basket dunk and they both pick up fouls easily... i agree he wouldnt go un drafted though
Someone will take him in the late 1st round. And if he does well in workouts...he could go even higher. We didnt see much of him this season....so you never know, he could dominate in workouts.
you dont have to see a player much to know how raw they are on offense though. his coach even said as much and he sees him in practice everyday. all he has to do is not stink in workouts and he has a chance to go first
From draftexpress.com, with Cousins, Wall and Bledsoe at the McDonalds All-American game, there is a lot of talk about Kentucky. Who is coming and who is going.
Draftexpress.com is reporting, "DeMarcus Cousins here in Columbus. Apparently saying Darnell Dodson is declaring for draft & that Cal told him only 4 UK players returning."
Orton's father has even made more comments.
"If Daniel has a good workout, he might be a top five pick...If he had played more, he would have made DeMarcus look bad."
-from a friend who is as inside as inside gets without being completely inside. you dig?
it looks like he is staying in the draft

Lamb says 9 spots available at UK next season
Steve Jones
CatsPause.com
UK target Doron Lamb said Tuesday that John Calipari had told him on Monday that "the whole freshman class is leaving" and that there would be nine scholarship spots available next season.
Potential doesn't mean level, He's got NBA potential but not the level yet to play. He needs to refine his game before entering the draft and whatever his father says, he ain't no nba scouts so if he just wants the money, he will have it for 2 or 3 years. If he wants his son to be a 15 years vet in the League, make him stay at Kentucky.

Really Dodson? Do you want to be the first pick in the D-League that bad?
That's crazy. If all of the freshmen leave, then the only way Kentucky will be a contender next year is if they get all of the unsigned McDonald's All-Americans to become Wildcats.
I'll have to find the source, but I read an article recently where several GMs said they're more interested in Daniel Orton than Cole Aldrich as an NBA 5 and would take Orton over Aldrich. I see a lot of what happened last year with Ed Davis and UNC in Orton and Kentucky this year, a prospect who didn't get a lot of media attention because he was playing limited minutes, but was very much in the minds of scouts and execs. I remember reading an ESPN Chad Ford article last season where a GM was joking with Ford that he let the cat out of the bag sort of speak about Davis's NBA potential. I like Orton as a shot blocker initially, but yes he is very raw on both ends of the floor. A good thing I've seen is that he does have a pretty good looking form on his shots and some consistency from Mid Range when given the chance. With his age, size, strength, decent athleticism, and touch he would seem to be a very good prospect, especially considering his age, the question is who would you take him over or what other front court players would you take him over?
I think he'd go in the mid 20's like BJ Mullins did, and I wouldn't expect much better of a rookie season for him either. Practicing against DeMarcus Cousins and playing limited minutes in the SEC does not make him ready to play minutes in the NBA. He'd need at least 3 years on the bench before he'd be a contributer.
He isn't that bad. Dude went head to head wit Cousins every practice so hes gotta have some kind of a game. Def wont pass 15 prolly.
Daniel will not be back at UK next year, he's gone. It's being widely speculated that he's already left school and will be moving to California to start training. UK fans are none too happy about this either. Not that he's entering the draft, but it's pretty bush league to drop out of school and potentially cost the team a scholarship down the road.
As for Dodson, he wasn't coming back next year anyway I don't believe. Apparantly there was some kind of "personal issue" with him.
"I would like for anyone to disregard anything that you might have heard my father say he was taken the wrong way in his interview."
this is from Daniel's twitter
^ Yes and that twitter post is nothing more than damage control from Daniel. I'm sure he didn't intend for some of these things to get out into public knowledge just yet. He won't be back at UK.
I don't know how many of you all are friends with Orton on his Facebook.
My buddy says there are a couple of UK fans (the type of UK fans that make true UK fans look bad) that have been bad mouthing him on his facebook. I think Orton has deleted all of the bad ones. One poster mentioned his mother, whom passed away.
Orton left some remarks claiming that some UK recruits were asking him, "are they all (UK fans) like that?"
I think these fans are upset that Orton may be costing us a scholarship. I don't quite understand the implications of Orton dropping out and it costing UK a scholarship. I thought he could just re-enroll if he decided to pull out.
did anyone see much of him in high school? I havent but i read some scouting reports that said orton has a nice low post game and a great passer, didnt see much of it this year but he did dish some nice passes
Orton was great in high school, he was a five star recruit. He injured his knee his senior year of high school so I'm not sure he was 100% at Kentucky. He also has a really nice jump shot he never showed at Kentucky. Here's a vid:

In what should be the first of possibly five UK players to test the draft, Daniel Orton is the first to decide.
