Lavin

Sorry guys, I know this was discussed yesterday but..........................My favorite coach is back. Steve Lavin. I give him three years and the Red Storm will back in the top 15 in rankings. This guy is a great recruiter. Even better than Calipari. I would argue that Calipari even stole a few style points from Lavin. I love this dude. It's why UCLA is my SECOND favorite team! Anyway, is Lavin a good coach. Heck no!!! I still take issue with him making Ray Young take that red shirt year, lol. But twice, he got the top recruiting class. Big East, execpt Syrauces, watch out. Lavin is laid back and gives great quotes to the media. He's very colorful. Did anybody here his interview last night during the NIT game. Lavin referenced the legal "Dream Team" of Johnny Cochran and Robert Shipiro and said he was the same for his coaching assisstans. Is he Pat Riley all over again or what?! I thought he would take that Arizona coaching job a couple years ago, but he passed. He once was offered the Purdue job years ago also, but I knew he wouldn't go there.

yeah, i said it on the other

yeah, i said it on the other thread, his track record for recruiting is top notch, of course that might be a little tougher at st johns. His coaching and discipline is questionable considering his mediocre success at ucla despite having some of the most talented teams i have ever seen.

Look at this 1999 squad that lost in the first round to detroit:

Baron Davis-lottery pick
jerome moiso-lottery pick
earl watson-nba player
matt barnes-nba player
dan gadzuric-nba player
jaron rush- mcdonalds all american
ray young-mcdonalds all american
Billy Knight-double digit scorer in his career

That squad is the perfect example of lavin. He will put together a sick squad, and then they will struggle all year to live up to expectations. However, you wont find a more likeable guy. You never see him look mad or getting into it with the media or calling out his players in the media. Im gonna be rooting for st johns as long as he is there.

I do see St. Johns

I do see St. Johns improving, but there facilities are so bad I just don't see people going there. Nova, Syracuse, and UConn are going to take there recruits from the area because there facilities are better.

I must say with Lavin being

I must say with Lavin being a west coast guy is going to need to hire assistants with ties to NYC area to get these kids interested in coming. Otherwise I believe he can bring St. Johns back to prominence. If he can coach better than Norm Roberts, I have no reason to believe why this would not be on the bubble come March, maybe even make an appearance, but we'll see.

St. Johns only has one

St. Johns only has one senior and there best player D.J. Kennedy is coming back. They beat some pretty good teams last year including Temple, Notre Dame, Louisville, and Cincinatti. I don't see a reason why they won't be good next year.

They might make the

They might make the tournament next year. By no means is Lavin a great coach, my boy Illperez already pointed that out. However, he is better than Norm Roberts! He'll have no problems grabbing kids. St. John's is in New York Citiy. They have had players such as Eric Barkley, Bootsy Thorton (anyone remember when he dropped 40 of Duke that Sunday afternoon in 1999), Lavel Postel and Ron Artest. All of them but Thorton played in the NBA. Thorton was good enough to play. Wait and see. Top notch coaches will start hating on Lavin. Then again, maybe not!! Then again maybe so. Unlike UCLA, St. John's would be happy with a sweet 16 appareance.

One last point, is Lavin the only Div. 1 head coach with a actress/model for a wife, lol.
