NCAA Cinderella Teams and Expectations

I always felt the NCAA tournament, despite the non-stop parade of TV commercials, is the most exciting event in American sports. I think it's better than the Super Bowl because of the unexpected upsets by so called Cinderella teams. I have a theory that explains why Cinderella teams play so well and then fail in the next game.

Cinderella teams from St. Mary's, Cornell, and Northern Iowa lit up this year's tournament. You might want to include Butler in that list, but that's debatable.

I think Northern Iowa's win over mighty Kansas was probably the greatest upset I ever saw. If you told me before that game that Northern Iowa would win, I would have referred you for psychological counseling. Anyway, the last time something like that happened, Princeton lost to a powerhouse Georgetown team by only 1 point. From a technical point of view, it wasn't an upset, but it sure was exciting.

Anyway, Cornell, St. Mary's, and Northern Iowa all faltered against their next opponent, essentially playing poorly. They missed shots they knocked down consistently during their upset wins. Why is that?

Prior to their upset wins, nobody expected them to play well and/or beat those big time squads so they played loose and free. But after they pulled off the huge upset, they were in the limelight and the pressure was on. Because of that pressure, they started missing shots they would normally make.

What do you guys think?

jk, but this NCAA is not the NCAA I remember in high shool.

I think once I saw Durant, Beasley, and Oden in college I had a distorted view of what the NCAA looked like.

This season was a bit disappointing.
