Shock Post: If Derrick Favors Continues His Current Streak, He Could Be The Second Pick

It sounds crazy now, but think about it: Favors was a top 3 LOCK before the season and at the beginning of the season, in large part because of his youth/potential as a big man. That hasn't changed. What's changed is the fact he is starting to dominate his position. His IQ is improving and when it catches up to his physical attributes, look out. Now Evan Turner is my favorite prospect in this draft. But he is a couple years older than Favors and has less "upside". Also Favors is a big man. NBA teams will still draft a stud 4 or 5 over a guard of equal skill level 99% of the time, even though ironically it's a guard dominant league. With that said, if a team that doesn't need a 1 or a wing desparately (example New Jersey) but needs a 4 gets the #2 pick, don't be surprised if they favor Favors. That's IF he continues his great play in the tourney.
Thoughts?

He could be the 3rd pick at

He could be the 3rd pick at best. If someone takes Favors over Turner....I think that's a terrible move

Knicksboy

Yeah Knicksboy I know what you're saying man. There is no way I'd take anyone at 2 over Turner, but I'm biased for Turner and Monroe. But I'm not gonna lie Favors is starting to look scary good. He's figuring it out, and I hear he has a great work ethic for a guy his age. If he is posting double-doubles for at least the next 2 games or so, you heard it here first: Derrick Favors will be in the discussion for #2.

No way he goes above Turner

No way he goes above Turner and Wall. 1 and 2 are already set. Barring injury nothing is changing that. That buzzer beater he hit in the Big Ten tournament solidified that. He is the most dominant player in college basketball and is only going number 2 cuz the Wall hype is so huge. If Favors continues this streak, I think he solidifies himself as a top 5 pick, potentially 3 overall.

The only way that I could

The only way that I could see Favors going #2, is if a team with a specific need for a PF trades up around or on draft night to select him. Personally, I think that he has a lower ceiling than Turner. But saying that, I think he will be a very solid pro.

Are yall

Are ya'll telling me that if Favors is beasting in the tournament like he has the last several games, and in workouts displays the first rate tools we already know he has, a team like Golden State with ZERO need for a Point, a Shooting Guard, or yet another small forward would automatically pass and choose Turner anyway? OK then. If that happens, then I wish the new coach and GM for the 2011 Golden State Warriors luck as they make their first top 5 draft pick.

i agree with you 100%...Favors ceiling is higher than Turner's imo & if he balls out here in the tourney he can change the draft...nothing is solidified going into the tournament...ask Beasley

I think Turner is lock for

I think Turner is lock for the 2nd pick right now but i do understand where you are coming from. If Golden State were to get the 2nd pick they would probably take a big over Turner though. Georgia Tech actually plays Ohio State 2nd game of playoffs if they win their first round so it will be interesting but I guess it depends on who plays better in that game and what team wins.

I would take a guard over a

I would take a guard over a big man anyday.. There's a better chance that a guard of small forward ends up being a star player in the league than a big man.

Take a look at the 1st big man drafted in the last decade:

2000 - Kenyon Martin (1st Overall) Pretty solid but remember, the 2000 draft was voted the worst draft in years.. Producing only 2 all stars and both were 1 time all stars..

2001 - Kwame Brown (1st Overall).. One of the biggest busts Tyson Chandler (2nd Overall) Solid backup.. Eddy Curry (4th Overall)... Wow..

2002 - Yao Ming (1st Overall) THE EXCEPTION to my ruling.

2003 - Darko Milicic (2nd Overall) Taken ahead of D-Wade and Carmelo.. Bosh aswell..

2004 - Dwight Howard (1st Overall) You got me there.. BUT Emeka Okafor (2nd Overall) What does he average? 8ppg? *exaggeration*

2005 - Andrew Bogut (1st Overall) Solid but not the star people were hoping.

2006 - Andrea Bargnani (1st Overall) Solid but not the "Next Dirk Nowitzki"

2007 - Greg Oden (1st Overall) 2 season ending injuries.. Nobody comes back from 2 of those, especially a big man.

2008 - Kevin Love (5th Overall) Pretty good but too young to say.

2009 - Blake Griffin (1st Overall) I've never bought all the Blake Griffin hype, we'll find out next year. Hasheem Thabeet (2nd Overall) Shoutout to him! He got his first start in about the 60th game of the season and still had no impact.. Finally someone other than Tyreke Evans gets a start when considering players that were selected in the top 5 of the 09 draft..

Hate to say it but...

Interesting article and it confirms that everyone should hold their horses on the whole "consensus 1-2" thing. I think this draft is too deep and talented for that. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=mc-afterthebuzzer031910&prov=yhoo&...
Also: shot out to Darrington Hobson! Told ya'll he and Luke Babbitt will be steals if taken after pick 21.

doubt if he goes 2. anyone

doubt if he goes 2. anyone whos watched him and can his game hasnt really changed he just gets the ball more. he still doesnt have more then on move which is catch the ball and turn towards the basket and out jump or over power whos checking him. or out reach him to get his shot off. offense is still very raw but his defense is pretty good and he has a knack for getting rebounds

If a team like the Sixers

If a team like the Sixers got the 2nd pick, I couldn't blame them for picking Favors. He's a good fit in Philly cuz he can run the floor well with Iggy and Thad and can replace an aged Elton Brand. I'm not sure if they would pass on Turner though

I don't want Philly touching

I don't want Philly touching Favors. I think Speights is our PF of the future anyway, so our #1 priority should be getting. I could see Philly taking Turner though, and letting Iguodala stay at SF.

And Favors even though he was more aggressive at the end of the year, still isn't worthy of being picked over John Wall or Evan Turner.
