Why is Donatas Motiejunas getting so much hype on this site?
He's too weak to play in the NBA for several years, he's a horrid rebounder and defender, and he has tons of attitude issues. And he's not even that good of a shooter. He seems really similar to Yi who's arguably the worst player in the NBA.
you hurt your credibility big time when you call yi arguably the worst player in the nba. Yi is a starter averging double digits and has shown great improvements in his physical play both on the boards and defense.
lol @ yi being the worst player in the nba
He is similar to a young Yi Jianlian though, I can see that comparison. He's got to get tougher and stronger (like Yi has) to be a 82-game NBA player though, because he's too weak to rebound and defend at even a mediocre level right now.
Yi Jianlian worse than DJ Mbenga? Kwame Brown? Aaron Gray? Nah.....He's a solid NBA player. Not a true starter, but he can be any teams rotation and get 7+ ppg and about 6 or 7 boards and a block. And he has some potential. Trust me, they can get alot worse than Jianlian.
Dude, muscle is the least worries of anyone drafting him...He can be really good.

I def thought tha worst player n tha nba was dj mbenga
I haven't heard anything about attitude issues from Motiejunas in a long time. Watching him play, he seems to be a good teammate.
Everything you just said could be said about Whiteside as well... Skinny, terrible defender, mediocre rebounder, attitude issues and not a good shooter.
Yi getting injured single-handily gave the Nets the boost to come from 20 down against the Knicks to win by 20. He makes the team so much worse just by being on the court. He is terrible on defense, he is one of the least efficient players in the NBA. On a playoff team, he wouldn't play. Yi is awful.
"Everything you just said could be said about Whiteside as well... Skinny, terrible defender, mediocre rebounder, attitude issues and not a good shooter."
I think Whiteside will be terrible as well, his issues have been talked about more though.
He isn't very efficient as you said. That's a fact. He's 7'0 tall and he shoots 39% from the field. Yikes. I still think he can be a rotation player in the NBA. He's got mismatch potential. He's far from the worst player in the NBA.
Apparently, Motiejunas is playing decently in Italy. Starting to get more minutes and being more productive. But from what I read, Jan Vesely maybe a better international prospect. He's a key player for the Partizan team. He helped the team defeated Barcelona (Ricky Rubio team which went undefeated until that game).
Motiejunas seems to have pretty offensive game and has high potential, but he got no defense.
Jan Vesely is a more complete player at this point, playing solid defense, and decent offense (although not as good as Motiejunas).
In a long run, I think Jan Vesely is a better international prospect.
9.4pts and 4.5rbds in the tough Italian league is not being overhyped. Remember Jennings'number last year with Roma. I saw him play for real at Douai tournament in France with the Lithuanian U18 team and he was really impressive offensively. Yes he has to add weight and be tougher but there are good chances he'll become a (very) good player in the NBA.
darkisrising19, the answer to your question is human nature. The NBA is a predominantly black league so people naturally want to see more white guys succeed at that level. In light of that, white players are constantly over hyped. The list is never ending, but let me start with a few names that immediately pop into my mind.
We can start with BJ Mullens, who just like Motiejunas, was originally a lottery choice for many draft pundits. Then there's the Vanderbilt center, A.J. Ogilvy, who was listed as a prime number one draft choice for almost two years before people finally realized he wasn't going to make it in the NBA. When Chris Mihm was at Texas, many draft analysts said he was the best big man in the country. When Luke Walton was at Arizona, he was touted as the national player of the year.
Think about players like John Scheyer, Luke Babbit, and Kyle Singler, who get tons of threads on this draft site. I would bet a huge amount of money that if they were black, you would see far fewer posts on above average players like them.
It doesn't mean people are racists, it's simply human nature. If the NBA was a predominantly white league, then you would see everybody touting black players around the world. It's very similar to the underdog syndrome and why people cheer for them.
There are times where a player's race matter but this just simply is not one of them. If anything, his hype comes from being European and therefore we are unable to watch him against college competition so we go strictly off potential. Dude could be green, purple, silver, doesn't matter in this case.
apb540, you made an interesting point, but history tells me you're wrong. Draft pundits are like everybody else, they want to see more diversity in the game so I believe it consciously or sub consciously impacts their opinions. Look at the names I listed above, BJ Mullens, A.J. Ogilvy, and Chris Mihm were all rated as high first round selections and I find it hard to believe race wasn't a factor.
Now that I've had a few minutes to think, let me throw out a few more names who were rated very high prior to the draft.
Although I never saw him play, I read some reviews of Motiejunas and almost everyone agrees that he doesn't rebound and he doesn't play defense. I'm trying to figure out why a 7 footer, who doesn't do 2 of the 3 most important things you want from a big man, is rated so high in the draft. One viable answer is skin color.
I'm NOT saying that's the only reason he's rated highly because he apparently has outstanding physical talent and lots of potential. But history taught me that race was at least one of the factors in his high rating.
his numbers are better than Bargnani at his age... and will be atleast as he is.
i am from basketball country Lithuania (Sabonis, Marciulionis, Ilgauskas, Kleiza, Songaila, Jasikevicius and etc). In Lithuania there are 3 million ppl, but we got 3 olympic bronze, 1 4 th place, won against USA in one game in olympics.
and I can say that he is extremely gifted on offence. Very good foot work. good shooting. improving defence, although too weak yet. he will never be a good rebounder or on blocks. but he will be unstopable on offence. he is clever.
btw there is new kid from Lithuania Valanciunas. I don't see him on mock 2011 but he will be better than motiejunas. 17 yrs old. check this out: http://supervideo.lt/video/85cab98e8d0180d9784/J-Valanciunas-vs-Prancuzija
he is even better now. alot better than in this video.
Valanciunas will get alot of hype being the next international lithuiana prospect. He seems good, hes seventeen though, and he still needs to work on things.
Regardless of the race issue, I agree with you on the fact that he is def rated too high. My good friend got to go to a season ticket holder dinner wit Ed Stefanski present and he asked him about Motiejunas. Ed told him that right now he looked like a late-first early-second pick. Now Stefanski is a terrible GM but he does have as much in's as possible so I will take his word on it.
apb540, I think your excellent post above confirms what I've been saying in this thread. Most objective people don't have him in the top 5 or 6 slots where NBADraft.net's had him for as long as I can remember. I know a lot of people don't like to face the racial issue head on, but it's a real one when it comes to white guys being over hyped far too often.
After pointing out he's only 19 years old and has lots of potential, here's what another website said about him. After you read the following assessment written this past January, ask yourself if you would want to take a chance on him as an early lottery selection.
"While Motiejunas leaves an incredibly strong impression with the talent he’s displaying on the offensive end, his work defensively and on the glass can’t be described as anything less than worrisome. Possessing average fundamentals on this end of the floor, Motiejunas is somewhat of a liability when attempting to defend on the perimeter. He’s extremely upright in his stance and shows very little in the ways of hustle or awareness, getting burned repeatedly in the film we took in.
His lack of strength is a major issue, but so is his extremely poor balance, as you regularly see him being knocked to the ground in every game he plays in. He gets pushed around by smaller players fairly often, giving up deep position in the post, and in turn easy baskets.
He remains an incredibly poor defensive rebounder, grabbing just 46 defensive rebounds in 448 total minutes, or one for every 10 minutes he’s on the court. Although rebounds are tougher to come by in Europe than they are in the NCAA, it’s tough to ignore the fact that he ranks amongst the worst defensive rebounders in his own league on a per-minute basis.
