Can Everyone In The NBA Dunk......?
I have an old SLAM where Boykins admits he can't dunk, only grab the rim. Steve Nash can dunk with ease, he just doesn't. He's 6'3" with long arms, what do you think? I'd be willing to bet that just about everyone outside of Boykins can dunk. Dunking's really not that big a deal to these dudes, unless it's a major part of their game, like Howard, Stoudamire, Carter and Kobe from a few years ago, etc... I played [obviously not in the league] and now I'm 28 with one surgically repaired knee and am having an MRI in a couple of weeks on the other knee and at 5'9" 180lbs and I can still dunk pretty easily.

I'm trying to work my way back to 360's and stuff, but right now it's all pretty simple dunks outside of a lob reverse and a baby cockback.
im not very athletic, and only played 1 year of high school basketball(played baseball and soccer other years) and in mid season form i could grab rim easy and could dunk volleyballs and im 5'8" at best. There is no doubt in my mind that guys that get paid to be in basetball shape and are generally taller and have longer arms than me can all dunk. everyone in the league can dunk. Nash is like 6'2" and even with arms even with his height he would only have to have like a 25" vertical to grab rim and even though he is older i know he can jump higher than that. Look at that dunk from Andre Miller the other night versus the nuggets, who knew he could do that?
What does "I can have Earl Boykins here" mean? You can bring him to NBADraft.net so we can play with him? Does what you wrote even make sense to you? The interviewer asked him if he could dunk, and Boykins said "NO." Seems pretty cut and dry to me.
When you said dunk you never specified what kind of ball......Dont let me Bill Clinton on ya make the request for a more specific question. He can probably dunk a volley ball. Or lay up tip dunk. HE CAN GRAB RIB FOR GODS SAKE AT 5'3
GIMME THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT...com on guys!!!!!
white flash impressive. I have dunked in high school never two handed yet but i need to get down to about 180 something and i will try and get it and I about to turn 30. I can still grab rim at about 215 or so and I am 5'8" and change but i have long arm though.
just cuz sumbody can touch or grab rim doesn't mean they can dunk. imo, u hafta actually get a lil higher than that for it to be a tru dunk. otherwise it's really just a fancy layup. i'm sure boykins isn't the ONLY 1 that can't dunk. old guys, bad kneez guys, and guys who r 6'2 or shorter AND maybe aren't great athletes all prolly can't dunk.
I was sitting in my room watching PTI and they had in argument if a bicycle kick was more impressive then a 360 dunk. Towards the end Wilbon mentioned how there are many NBA players that have never dunked. One name he said was Steve Blake. I feel Wilbon is very credible considering he covers the NBA A LOT.
was in a dunk contest as a matter of fact. Haha granted he didn't do all that well.
First off, thanks everybody for the props. What I'd give to be 24 again, haha. Hell yeah Chris Duhon can dunk. Coming out of HS he was a BEAST. Was in the McD's dunk contest, and did pretty well if I remember. Also, just because someone doesn't dunk in a game doesn't mean they can't. I'd put money that Steve Blake can dunk, even if it's only in an open gym with no one near him. I remember reading that Juan Dixon [ironically Blake's team mate at Maryland] couldn't dunk until his jr year of college, and that's at 6'3" with pretty long arms. I was watching a Rockets/Timberwolves game a couple of years ago, and when the buzzer sounded Troy Hudson grabbed the ball, ran to the rim, bounced it to himself and did a one-hand 360. I have no idea if Hudson's ever actually dunked in a game, but that was an impressive dunk, especially considering Hudson is known as a spot up shooter, and a small one at that. Most everyone in the league, particularly backcourt players, are serious athletes.
I'm confident there are tons of guys who people think can't dunk that can throw it down. Sherron Collins had that dunk in the McDonalds All-American game and never dunked in 4 years of college. He's just more effective below the rim using his body to fend off defenders rather than stretch out and probably have a better chance of getting blocked. You may be able to dunk, but to do it in a game over someone 6'10'' or on a break and have a greater chance of getting swatted on a chasedown are two different things, These guys are pros and know what they do best and if your 6' tall lofting a floater or going under the rim makes a lot more sense than trying to slam it down against a player much bigger. There are shorter guys who can do that, but those guys are the elite atheletes, everyone else is just to smart to try it very often if ever.
I was having an arguement with my friend and he does not think everyone can dunk, but i feel that with the amount of training they go through everyone should be able to dunk even Boykins and Nash should be able, what do you guys thnk ?
