I know he is projected as a 2nd round pick, and I hope he gets drafted in the 2nd round. I can really see him being a solid nba player off the bench who can score and rebound as well as play taller guys in the NBA. He's been on my mind and have wanted to bring him up, so what do you guys think???
I always find it amusing that everyone assumes it is a lock that Luke Harangody will be drafted, and there are often threads about how he could sneak into the late first while a guy like Chism who is taller, longer, more athletic, better defensively, just as skilled, and with a better history of helping his team win gets dismissed.
There are about 10-20 guys in a draft who are a cut above the rest. There are probably 80-90 guys every year who are just hoping to find a good fit and a chance. There are slight differences here and there, but they aren't particularly great. Chism could easily make it in the NBA, but he isn't an elite prospect and needs a little luck.
I am not an NBA scout, so I have no clue about Wayne's measurements and all that other stuff, but his 4 years at Tennessee he has always played a role in them winning. I am not saying this guy is going to become a star or anything, I am just saying he can be a solid role player off the bench.
Chism has a nice skill set for someone his size!... but ultimatly his rebounding and defense will prevent him from playing in the nba but a few years overseas may do some wonders think Udnious Haslem!
I don't think he's good enough at anything in particular to be in the NBA. He isn't quite a good rebounder, isn't quite quick or polished enough in his footwork down low for NBA standards, isn't quite a good enough 3-point shooter (even though he tries to be), and he doesn't have a mid-range game or off the dribble game. Add in that he's a poor defender and lacks height, length and athleticism and you have why he's nothing more than a longshot prospect.
With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if he had a Udonis Haslem type role or impact after a few years overseas. That's unlikely, but if he works on all of those things skill-set wise he can be in the NBA.
I always like watching Chism play. Not great at anything, but decent enough at a lot to make a difference in a game. I too see him helped by going overseas. Haslem was smart and developed one aspect of his game overseas that made him coveted in the league - 15 foot baseline jumpshot. Made his whole career off being able to pop the mid range j and playing solid but unspectacular low block D. Let us remember that almost every single player in the NBA was a star on their respective college team, but the non-NBA superstars who last are the ones who take the time to carve a niche for themselves (3pt shooting, Defensive specialist, rebounder, pace-changing guard, etc.). Hope Wayne can do the same.
i can see why people say Harangody is a lock. because hes good. maybe wont be real good on the nba level but he is good. i expect chisim's teams to do better because lets face it, hes had better teams. ifyou replace him with luke im sure tenn would have been even better. as far as wayne making it in the nba. i think he could but i wouldnt bet on it. i thinks its harder to predict if a second round guy can make it because there are so many guys with second round potential who are so similar
That whole argument that Chism has had a better team seems to fall now that Notre Dame's supporting cast is playing much better when they aren't giving the ball to a very inefficient scorer every time down.
