Hassan Whiteside and Marshall
I have never seen Hassan Whiteside play yet. I would love to watch him, and see how good he actually is. Do you guys think Marshall has a chance of making the NCAA tournament, that way I could finally see him play. As of right now they are 21-8 and third in their conference which is Conference USA. This conference also has #23 UTEP.
I made a mistake in mentioning Marshall's standing and record. They are actually in 4th with and 9-4 record in their conference, and 21-7 overall. Memphis, UAB, and #25 UTEP are also in this conference. Now you can make an accurate decision as to whether or not Marshall will make the NCAA tournament. Sorry for the mistake in the original post.
Topic Overplayed. Sorry
NO Marshall won't be in the NCAA tourney
They have played a dookie schedule
They don't have any top notch impressive wins
They will have to win the C-USA tourney in order to make the NCAA tournament & I don't see that happening.
If Marshall does not make the tourney, then I think Whiteside will stay another year. I believe he wants to lead Marshall to the tourney, and impress other teams, maybe perform upsets. That is his goal right now and he will do anything to accomplish even stay an extra year and miss this years draft. If you are right gatorheels then he won't come to the NBA until 2011.
I live just outside of huntington and have had season tickets to Marshall basketball for many years, this team this year is as good as any they've had in quite some time and they are obviously led by Hasaan Whiteside, a tremendous talent as well as a good kid in the community and good student, how he ended up at Marshall still has some of us baffled. His skills are very raw and he's made a lot of progress towards bettering himself as this season has progressed. However i personally believe this young man has a lot more work to do to be fully be prepared for the next level. When he reported to Marshall he was only about 210 pounds to which they began working with him and he's gained close to 25 additional pounds, altough he's still very lean and there have been games where i've seen a more physical player push him around and at times have his way with him, to me this would be an alarming thing if i were NBA team looking at him, can it get better without a doubt but it'll take time. On the plus side he's got spectacular feel for the game on the defensive end and thats why he leads the nations in blocks and doesnt foul much.
As far as Marshall not making the tourny i don't look for them to but i'm hopeful they will. The only chance they have is to like GatorHeels said win the Conference USA tournament. However i disagree with him i still believe this young team has a shot at doing just that when you look at there conference losses they look like this:
UAB beat them by two and it was a very poor 1st half effort by Marshall
Memphis beat them by three and Marshall led late in the game only to hand it to the tigers
Houston beat them pretty bad 81-66 but Marshall made that trip without two starters and Hasaan got in foul trouble which he rarely does
Tulsa beat them by four mainly because they proved to be clutch down the stretch and protected the ball and hit their free throws.
Also i want to note these four losses all came in consecutive games since then this team has rebounded and won the next six games on the schedule heading into saturdays game with UCF.
As far as him returning for a Sophomore season i'd love to see it, i think it'd be beneficial to him as far as developing his skills, the university, the team, and the conference, but i don't know how i would go about telling a kid that has a chance to make the big bucks to stick around, i'd advise him to cash in on that lottery ticket while he could
hope this helps!
Thanks Kbob. Your insight was excellent. I mostly was not surprised by your comments, because I had heard them before, especially from this site. I loved the point you brought about them loosing the four games all consecutively and all were pretty close games except for the one against Houston. Hopefully they will do well in their conference championship, and win or come very close. I think money though is a nonfactor to him. I think he cares about proving to others that Marshall is force to be reckoned with and putting them on the map, then money and going to the NBA. This is also why I still think he will skip this draft and wait for 2011 even though he is a lock for the lottery.
I hope you are right about him sticking around another season, there's nothing I'd like to see more because I enjoy watching the kid play ball. Also you mentioned earlier that you'd wanted to see him and the herd play as I said earlier I think they've got a shot at the tournament even if it's a long shot, if they do not make it I think they are deserving of an NIT bid and those games are broadcasted on ESPN so maybe you can see them in that
kbob3515 i played college basketball in phillipi wv for alderson broaduss i was wondering if you remeber a guy named jared?..he played on my team for half a year then trasferred to marshall. i dont remeber his last name but he was a 7'0 white kid. this was back in 2000-2001 or 2002 season
