I was wondering this topic... The 1992 Dream Team was the greatest group of basketball players brought together to bring Gold back to the USA. They destroyed they opposition by more than an adverage of 40 points per game. At that time the other countries didn't have a chance. Since then the games have been getting closer and closer and the USA have actually lost a few games. I believe it's due to the US talent level decreasing along with the other countries talent increasing. What would be the outcome if the original 92 Dream Team played the teams we're facing today (of course I'm talking about at the level of play the US players were playing at in 92) Would it still be 40 point blow outs or would there be closer games with some loses. For those who don't remember the roster of the Dream Team
Talent in the US isnt decreasing. Players in other countries are far better than they use to be. Players in the NBA today are far more skilled that 20 years ago in the NBA. Magic, Jordan, Malone, Barkley, Bird were just freaks. They were years ahead of their time.
i dont think they would still win by 40 because the euros are much better now then they were then but they would still win by alot. that was the most talented group in the history of basketball. everyone on that team is or will be a hall of famer except laettner
the world has gotten WAY better then it was back then. Back then, you could count the number of players in the world who could play in the nba on your fingers and Sabonis was probably the only guy who could make an all-star team. If the dream team played today, they would win, but no more impressively then the last olympic team did. Keep in mind bird was well past his prime, pippen was still growing as a player and a lot of people didn' think he should be on that team. Leattner was not olympic worthy.
I watched all those original dream team games that i could when they happened. They were great and would bring home gold for sure. But the reason the competition is closer is because the rest the world got better.
no more then the last olympic team???..i disagree. that team even with a older bird was no joke. jordan shuts wade or kobe down, magic kills what ever pg. ewing or david gets howard in foul trouble and locks him down. scottie doesnt shut down bron but bron has a very hard time especially if they go zone. barkley kills who ever check him. that team is still the best ever top to bottom. and i didnt even mention karl malone stocken. this team didnt have to drive alot to score like wade and lebron has to. hell that season mullan and drexler were both putting up 25 a game. malone was at 28 a game
jordan might outplay wade or kobe, but he doesn't shut them down, lets not go overboard. Besides, this about team usa vs the world, not each other.
I don't think magic kills chris paul or dwill at all. He might take them down into the post, but that's it. On the other end, magic couldn't even gaurd guys in the 80"s, paul and DWill would blow by him at will.
Scottie woul do well on bron, but bron would get his like he always does.
Barkley wouldn't destroy today's pf's. He even admitted that he struggled aginast taller pf's back in the daylike elden campbell, but there weren't too many tall pf's who had skill back then. Think about it, who was the best pf in the game 6-10 or over? He would still be great, but if they gave him the ball and expected him to just go to work on guys, he would be much less effective today. What made him unique was that he was a pf who could dribble and shoot and pass and play on the perimiter. He was a pg in highschool. Bigs were not like that back then, now the game is much more eveolved for pf's to be more versatile.
I never said those weren't great. I never said the current usa team was better. I just said they wouldn't wreck other countries any more then the 2008 team did. The game has evolved quite a bit in the last 15 years. Like i said, i watched htem play so i'm not just basing that off what i've heard.
