Butler Swapped For Howard [Official]

Forward Caron Butler is having a rough year on the struggling Washington Wizards. And forward Josh Howard is having an even rougher year on the very solid Dallas Mavericks. But both players could use a change of scenery, and that’s reportedly going to happen tonight.
According to at least four media outlets, including the Washington Post, the Mavericks will trade Howard, forward/center Drew Gooden, guard Quentin Ross and forward James Singleton to the Wizards for Butler, center Brendan Haywood and guard DeShawn Stevenson.
To InsideHoops.com, this seems like a good deal for both teams. For the main players, Butler gets to join a winning team he can contribute to, though he’ll be asked to be more of a role player than he may be used to. And Howard gains more responsibility, something that may do him good.
The most important player in this trade other than Howard and Butler is Haywood, a solid center having a good season. He should definitely help Dallas.
More coming tonight when the deal actually becomes official.

I think this is a great

I think this is a great trade for Dallas. Butler may be struggling somewhat this season, but dude can play. He's very versatile and plays well when the game is on the line. He'll definitely be more consistent and reliable than Howard has been lately.

Haywood is an underrated pickup. He's having somewhat of a breakout season and will be huge for Dallas in the middle. He's an upgrade over Damp. Stevenson was probably just a throw in, but I think Dallas could benefit from his personality. I like this deal.

The Wizards really looked to

The Wizards really looked to clear capspace, all 4 of the contracts they acquired are expiring

Is the beginning of a Wizards firesale?

Butler...Gone.
Jamison...Next?

i'm really curious to see

i'm really curious to see how much better this makes dallas. They were good before, but no reason to think they were gonna win a title. Now with this trade, i think they will be better.

Haywood isn't that much

Haywood isn't that much improvement over Dampier..But he's give Dallas another big ,if they meet the Lakers in the playoffs..But getting Butler was a major coup..They really needed scoring from the starting shooting guard spot ..Plus Butler & Stevenson can play defense...For Washington Trade gives McGee more playing time...And Gooden is a very underrated rebounder..Looks like Washington is rebuilding..But if they trade Jamison it should be for some young talent and expiring contracts

Mav's just improved greatly

Mav's just improved greatly with this lopsided trade. However I understand the strategic reasons on the Wizards part as well.

Butler > Howard
Haywood > Gooden
Stevenson > Singleton + Ross

I think this will push

I think this will push Dallas past Denver. It is a solid move for them.

For Washington, they get out from under a future contract. If they move Jamison for an expiring now, they'll have max guy cap room.

Jamison should be next

Looks like the Wiz just wanna clean house. They did not receive any young player or draft pick. The only thing they got in this deal is got rid of Stevenson's contract along with Caron's. Jamison is also on the block, and I hope they would do better in a trade for Jamison.

i think this is a great

i think this is a great trade for dallas, like charles barkley said the mavs are known as a finesse team this adds alot of toughness. and i wouldn't sleep on desawhn stevenson, this team has had trouble with finding a starting 2 and deshawn is tough can knock down a shot and can play some d. i dont know if they will be able to beat the lakers in a 7 game series but i think this solidifies them as a top 3 team in the west.

realgmbakax, they might not

realgmbakax, they might not have gotten a young player or pick, but right now they have about $7-9 million in cap space. If they move Jamison for an expiring, they will have upwards of $20 million in cap room, a top 7 pick, and a high second rounder. It would be more hope than Washington has had in a while.

Shooter

I like the trade for Dallas for reasons everyone has mentioned, but I have always thought that what Dallas needed beside another solid center was someone that can shoot well from the outside. More or less a 3 point threat, but I guess there aren't many of those out there that are starting quality guys along with the fact that Dallas really doesn't have much to give up except for cap space. I'm surprised Washington didn't get at least a pick even if it was a second rounder.

Does it make it better that

Does it make it better that Dallas doesn't have a pick this year with which to deal? Their first is going to New Jersey and their second goes to Indiana.

Future

I never said it had to be this year. Teams can always trade future picks. If they wanted they could make it a pick 5 years from now assuming the pick isn't floating in another deal.

hmm..

so now that the trade went down.. where does jamison go?
it only makes sense that he gets trade because:
1) team is throwing in the white flag and wants to get younger and expiring contracts
2) why would he wanna play for the wiz anymore, they give up and have problems, he prolly wants to go to a contender cause he isnt getting any younger..

okay

so will this big trade start off a snow ball effect and more teams in the league, mostly the west, make trades to try to match dallas now?

I think it might, the west

I think it might, the west is looking like a 2-3 team race with the Lakers, Mavs, and Nuggets

Teams right outside that circle like San Antonio, Phoenix, Utah might also be looking to join that race by adding a few pieces Iguodala, Camby, Jamison, McGrady, are a few that might be on the move..
