Dude might be the breakout star of the college basketball season after John Walls...Johnson has Syracuse ranked in the top 10 despite them losing several starters from last season..He's worked hard and made himself a solid NBA prospect..I heard some people comparing him to Danny Granger and others saying his the 2nd coming of Scottie Pippen...But to me his game is similar to that of Derrick McKey..McKey was a solid player that had some good years with the Pacers & Sonics...There are a few things that he really have to work on if he wants to at least be on Danny Granger's level..Everyone knows that he's no where near Pippen's skill level..Pippen was much stronger had a decent outside shot and was 1 of the best defenders to ever play...I think he'll have a solid career as a good role player..But not a superstar

Solid comparison

I'm not sure McKey had the length Wes apparently has, but both seem like tough defensive players on the NBA level who can hit the open outside shot. You NEED guys like him to go deep in the playoffs.

That being said, I think he could also be compared to Morris Peterson.... 5 years ago. and James Posey (had great athleticism coming out of college).

yes, i agree 100%, i think

yes, i agree 100%, i think at best he can score like 18ppg and have like 6rpg and play solid d. Which isn't bad but if people are expecting over 20 points a game, they may be hugely disappointed. He is a very good number 3 option on a good team, IMO.

If Luol Deng can score 18

If Luol Deng can score 18 per game, then so can Johnson. It doesn't mean it will be a good thing for the team, but it can happen that a guy who doesn't dribble has an oversized role on a mediocre team.

Defense

Everyone talks about scoring potential when it comes to lottery picks. I think that's being severely narrow-minded. If you think about it, there are WAYYYY more prolific scorers in the NBA than top-notch defenders. I mean, does a wing player have to score 20 points to be worth a top 5 pick? I don't think so. I look at how many lower draft picks have loads of offensive potential, but not much in the way of defense (see: Maggette, Okur, etc.)

If I were a GM, I'm more concerned about getting a guy who'll score 15 and limit Joe Johnson/ Kobe/ to 20 or 25 rather than a 20 point scorer who'll let these types of guys go off for 35 on any given night.

I'm not saying it's a sure thing that Wes Johnson becomes an elite defender, but from the wing position, with so many prolific scorers in the league, I'd rather take someone with defense in spades than a potential 20 point scorer.

I also saw the Bulls be

I also saw the Bulls be considerably better last year when he went down with an injury and they had John Salmons at the 3. He can hit a 17-footer (so can Wes Johnson), but he is a limited player who plays a bigger role than he would on a good team.

re: Turral2

Defense wins championships

that being said some teams dont have good SF defense and might play him at the SF

to make up for it, if that happens I see him struggling to contain them

also IMO

he's similar to Al Thornton but skinnier and quicker, his handles shouldnt be a problem

if he is able to operate in the corner.

also at the NBA level he should be a good "corner" player

he kind of reminds me of

he kind of reminds me of Kelenna Azibuke from the Warriors, just minus the range. He's a good rebounder and can get a couple assists a night, and can play defense. That being said, I'd still rather have Evan Turner though

And turral how can you say Ben Gordon didn't stretch the floor for the Bulls? Did you watch the Bulls play last season? Thats EXACTLYwhat he did

ok first of all when ya'll

ok first of all when ya'll do the comparisions ya'll arent thinking things through. of course hes not scottie pippen in his prime but scottie pippen didnt start out being a great player either so theres no reason he cant be compared to him. scotties jumper wasnt always great. second of all defense is not a problem because most players, even stars, cant play great defense. no one shuts anyone down and one on one defense is very overrated by some of ya'll on this site. its all about team defense. there are many starters in the nba who give up a nice amount of points on a nightly basis. as long as he wouldnt be giving up 40 a night( yeah he can give up 25 or even 30 to players like lebron, wade, kobe) but every team doesnt have a player that can score that much and the ones that do, its no big deal for the player to score there average. so i wish ya'll would stop with the" he will struggle on defense" because as rookies and even second year players youre expected to struggle on defense. he does have the potential to be on granger and possible even pippens level with time and he could possibly become mckey as well. no one in college is a sure thing. theres no shaqs, lebrons, wilts, kareems coming out

now if you had said you cant say that ben gordon DIDNT stretch the floor. then your insult would be justified...

stop hating on wes

Wesley has loads of talent, and with he right coaching in the NBA i think he will be a very good number 2 option on a team. And all the people saying he cant play D, well thats your opinion, but its very hard to judge a players deffensive skills coming out of a 2-3 zone, he certainly has all the tools to become a great defender in the NBA. He may not be exactly NBA ready right now, but give the kid 2-3 years, I mean how many times in the NBA do you see players get drafted with loads of "potential" over a guy with a proven skill, i mean hell, the pistons took darko over Melo, Wade, bosh, etc. because they tought he had potential to be the next Dirk.

he plays in a zone defense!

he plays in a zone defense! who has came from the cuse and been a great defender? he can be a good 3rd option but i think the top 5 should only be for franchise players or those who bring an some type of elite skill to a team

The man plays EXACTLY like

The man plays EXACTLY like Granger at the same stage of development...Alot of y'all either don't remember Granger in college and even sometimes now, played PF. I think Johnson can put up borderline All-Star numbers by his 2nd season, and then emerge similar to Granger's production spike in 08-09. He may not be able to handle the ball that well, but he can get to the rim because he's long and quick. That sounds alot like the current day Granger. I'd be surprised if he didn't put up 20 ppg in 2 seasons, and that's at least. He has the potential to be a beastly scorer. Anyone with a shot with that much range and a back to basket game like Johnson has is going to be a big time factor in the NBA. I think the joke will be on all of y'all when he develops into an All-Star.

you think top 5 should be a

you think top 5 should be a francishe player?..how many franchise players do you think ar ein ever draft beanz?..you sound like u dont watch much nba basketball because arounding to you there should be 2 franchise players in the past 5 drafts. you say how many great defenders come from cus, hell how many great defenders come from any school?. thats a pretty bad arguement to prove youre point. how many guys bring a elite skill in year one or even 2?. lebon wasnt even elite n year one. you dont come in with a elite skill you build on the foundation of skills you already have
