PHILADELPHIA -- Thaddeus Young and Lou Williams sizzled instead of sulking after getting bumped from the starting lineup, combining for 33 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a surprising 92-81 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night.
Young had been one of three Sixers to start all 41 games this season until Friday. He scored 16 of his 22 points in the second quarter to help the Sixers grab an early double-digit lead and beat the second-best team in the West.
Williams came off the bench for only the third time this season and scored 11 points. Young and Williams were the only Sixers in double figures entering the fourth quarter.
Maybe coach Eddie Jordan is on to something as the 14-win Sixers still believe they have a shot at the eighth playoff seed in the East.
Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry never got hot offensively and Shawn Marion missed nearly the entire second quarter with a lacerated right hand for Dallas.
It seemed inevitable that the Mavericks would eventually make a run at the Sixers and send Philadelphia to another close, crushing loss. After all, the Sixers had blown so many large leads late in defeat. Not on this night.
The Sixers kept running, pushing and scoring. Marreese Speights, who scored 14 points, made the first three baskets of the fourth for a 78-67 lead. Willie Green's three-point play off a driving layup pushed the lead to 14 points.
Nowitzki buried an 18-footer that pulled the Mavericks within single digits. Allen Iverson, voted to start in the All-Star game Thursday, scored a twisting layup and made a free throw and the lead was back to 12.
That was good enough for the Sixers to hold on and win only their seventh home game of the season.
Nowitzki scored 15 points and Drew Gooden had 14 for Dallas.
Jordan said before the game Brand was close to a return to the starting lineup after his unceremonious benching six weeks ago. Jordan kept quiet that Brand was actually in the starting lineup. Brand and Holiday scored Philadelphia's first eight points of the game to make the lineup move seem like a small success.
Young, the 6-foot-8, 220-pound power forward, was the one who made it a smashing one. Young was 6 of 8, made two 3-pointers and scored 16 points in the second quarter as the Sixers outscored Dallas by 13.
Williams hit a little floater and Young followed with a 3 to help the Sixers grab a 54-48 lead at halftime.
Young finished 9 of 12 from the floor and provided the energy and scoring off the bench the Sixers have missed all season.
NOTES: 76ers center Sam Dalembert is planning another visit to Haiti to aid the relief effort. Dalembert, the NBA's only Haitian-born player, was there on a two-day, goodwill mission earlier this week and said he hoped to return to Haiti over the All-Star break. ... Jordan was glad Iverson was voted an Eastern Conference All-Star starter. "The fans remember him as an exciting player and he's certainly added another dimension for us," Jordan said. "He's very popular, that's what the voting is for." ... Phillies All-Star center fielder Shane Victorino, who finalized a $
their frontcourt nucleus is pretty good
1 problem though:
andre miller not re-signing set them back one ELITE player though
I think the Thunder might be more athletic.
76ers have more depth though
Atlanta is the most athletic team in the league IMO. G.S. is in contention too.
I beg to disagree on the SIxers being the most athletic because I think the Hawks can top them in that category... Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Jamal Crawford, Mo Evans, AL Horford, Joe Johnson... That's a pretty damn athletic guys... PLUS you put Josh Smith x3 above the rest...
It's definitely between the Sixers and Atlanta.
There are only two sixer players that are athletic. Young, and Williams. That's it no more. So to me they are not even considered as being an athletic team. The Hawks, thunder, Warriors, and maybe the Blazers. Aldridge is climbing once again, and deserves some respect.
u dont even watch the sixers ur a jazz fan outside of brewer ur best athlete is (or was) kirilenko
Iguodala, Carney and Dalembert are good athletes too
you forgot to add joe johnson. and jamal crawford to atlanta
Jamal Crawford should be added, but Joe Johnson is not more than average athletically.
no i didnt forget
their games arent predicated on athleticism
they arent high flyers, they are silky shooters
this post is most athletic not are there games predicated off of that. speights game isnt predicated off being a great athlete. the post is about how athletic the players are not if there games are predicated on it. actually eveyone has to make a athletic move to even play. athleticism is speed, vertical movements so anyone who can do that at a higher level then another should be on the list even if it isnt there most strongest part of there game
The Trail blazers when healthy are as good athletically as anyone in the league. Roy, Webster, Batum, Bayless, Aldridge, Oden, Fernandez. But the most athletic team is definitely the Warriors. Azibuke, Maggette, Ellis, Randolph, Biedrins, Wright, even Turiaf and CJ Watson are good athletes. (BTW Steph Curry is starting to adapt his game, and he'll be an All Star with in 3 years. This guy is capable of 20-4-7- with 2 steals and deadly shooting)
i forgot about the blazers and warriors
I did too, well at least the Warriors. The Warriors have a roster full of athletic players. They are the most athletic team
yeah i would have to agree. that goes to show you that it takes more then just being a athletic team to win
Its ATL thats the best..
Monta, Buke, Randolph, Wright, Andris, Maggette...but Atlanta and Portland have alot too...if this was the We Believe Warriors with Barnes, Ellis, Harrington, Andris, J-Rich, B-Dizzle
shoulda woulda coulda
o no!!! it has to be Atlanta
Atheletic is not jus high flying its speed agility all that will that said the nuggets have some pretty athletic ppl melo jr martin birdman lawson nene is pretty agile n dnt forget joey graham burried onda bench
Daaaaaaam u guys havent mentioned the Bulls..they've got some horses also...rose,thomas,noah,deng,gibson,james johnson and salmons ...even hinrich, not bad for a white boy..thats just about their entire team
what about grizzlies, i think they are worth mention but i think that the most athletic team were old suns with nash, barbosa, diaw, marion and stoudemire.... they were crazy
