Hassan Whiteside #2 on the Big Board?
whats there left to say? he's a good prospect
but still developing
physically and mentally
probably a defensive
liability at the next level
one on one versus heavier guys
until he packs more weight
but it looks like he can pack on weight quickly
if he makes the jump
I've seen skinny tall centers block shots
against shorter centers
i think he is a longer version of d.favors
both raw offensively
if he comes out this year definitely he would be picked over davis, possibly over favors
i would say 1-wall
2-turner
3-whiteshide
4-motej
5-johnson
6-aminu
7-favors
8-cousins
9-davis
Are you kidding me? Whiteside is nowhere near ready for the NBA, and you think he would go third? I think #2 in 2011 would be absurd given what he has showed to this point. I saw him play against UNC, and he looked like a run-of-the-mill mid-major center completely overwhelmed by the length and athleticism of UNC. The same length and athleticism of UNC that didn't bother Trevor Booker. The same team that didn't slow Patrick Patterson or Dexter Pittman. Third? Because he owned some poor freshman at UCF? Because Asim McQueen couldn't keep him off the offensive glass?
This guy is an exact clone of DeAndre Jordan. No ifs, ands, or buts. Considering what DeAndre has shown in spurts, if I were an NBA GM during this year's draft, I'd take Whiteside anywhere in the 10-20 range as a 3 year project.
However, if he stayed another year and he improved his offensive game while putting on 15-20 pounds, he should move up to the 3-8 range because GMs will say: Best case Dwight Howard, Worst case, DeAndre Jordan. I'd say that's a pretty safe pick in the mid-high lottery.
man this site has some serious KNEE JERK issues.....
Rodney williams #3 or whatever in 2011 mock a month ago, then he went on to not even play, and looks lost.
Now, Whiteside is the #2 player in 2010 big board, and #1 in 2011 mock.
Come on now....geez
Why does NBADRAFT.NET hype everybody up so much, don't they realize they make themselves look like fools when they're wrong? Especially when it's of this magnitude, 2nd best prospect available?
"Rodney williams #3 or whatever in 2011 mock a month ago, then he went on to not even play, and looks lost."
Most explosive athlete in college though, elite quickness for a SF too, but yeah, he doesn't play because his basketball IQ is non-existent. A prospect for the future, but not until 2012. The Gophers aren't going to be competing for National Championships anytime soon, so Tubby can sit him and let him develop.
look, one bad game against a top team is not the end of the world. marshall still plays west virginia and memphis so we will see if this will become a trend of not producing against good competition. not to mention that his statline against UNC (7pts 4reb and 3blks) is comparable to an average game for derrick favors (i know they are in the acc)..... I mean he might be raw, but he is a super talented player who is showing to be a better (possibly) shot blocker and athlete than hasheem thabeet. So why not top 5? IDK maybe im just talkin out of my @$$ but give the kid two more chances at some better comp. before you rag on him
I haven't seen him play yet but.. He was a 4 star recruit coming out of high school. So this guy isn't just some no-name that came out of nowhere. He was recruited by UConn & Kentucky some. Don't know why he chose Marshall?
The only quality team Marshall has played all season has been UNC. But, like ckellley said above...Marshall does have some tough games ahead on their schedule. So we will get a better feel for just how good Whitside is in the next couple weeks.
His stats are off the charts which is a good sign that this guy is for real. He only plays 24 minutes a game but still manages 12 points, 9 rebounds, & 6 blocks. Shoots 58% from the field.
You have to think he has more upside than a guy like Larry Sanders. Whiteside is not only younger but is already putting up better/more efficient stats. He has the length & athleticism...the youtube highlights show that haha.
For a kid who is playing Mid-Major ball he is doing great, but the jump from Mid-Major ball to the NBA is pretty huge. I'd prefer to see him transfer out of Marshall and see what he does against legit competition. Would be interesting to see how he fairs against guys similar to Pittman with a little more size.
No doubt he has talent and major upside, but I'd like to see what he does playing consistently against the major programs.
Hassan Whiteside games against quality big men to watch for:
January 20th vs. West Virginia (Kevin Jones and Devin Ebanks)
February 3rd @ Tulsa (Jerome Jordan)
February 17th vs. Tulsa (Jerome Jordan)
March 3rd vs. UTEP (Arnett Moultrie, Derrick Caracter)
I think the website just has the mocks mixed up or something. Because he's not a top 5 pick in this draft. He's eerily similar to DeAndre Jordan as was pointed out. He's extremely long and athletic, but raw and unpolished too. I expect to see him in 2011...
Oddly enough, I got chances to see him play
He came to Binghamton for a game, I got to see him on TV vs Troy.
He is very raw but I don't know, unlike Favors the numbers are there. He maybe a couple years away but isin't Minnesota/ Indiana/ Milwaukee?
I would have no problem with Minnesota taking Whitesdale with the 2nd pick in 2010 because he can grow with that team. Should he stay maybe another season? I don't know because how much will the opponent's talent increase?
Whiteside at #2 this year would be absurd. He MIGHT become a good player, but a team being a couple of years away from contending isn't a good reason to draft a project. A re-building team pinning their hopes on a hit or miss guy like Whiteside is the easiest way for a GM to be fired.
Also, Minnesota has more pressing needs than a Thabeet-type of big man coming off the bench, especially at #2. Johnson, Henry, Aminu, or Turner would all be much better choices.
I don't know.
Like we seen in past drafts-Potential is always a key factor. If Whiteside comes out and people like him and believe he can be a Andrew Bynum type player, I believe he can go to a team like Minnesota.
Also, Minnesota has 5 potential 1st round picks so I don't know if Guard is a huge position needed like we believe. There are many guards in the mid teens (Willie Warren, James Anderson), Combo guard/forwards ( Damion James, Stanley Robinson and Scottie Hopson) and maybe some in FA.
I'm on the fence here. On one hand, yes you never wanna take a project in the top 5 but with potential comes upside and that's where I can see Minnesota look at Whiteside and take him.
Now that I think about it- This happened twice this season where two "projects" were taking in the top 10 since 2005.
Andrew Bynum ( 10th to Los Angeles)
Dwight Howard (1st to Orlando)
Whiteside is much more unpolished than those two...Bynum came into the NBA with an NBA level post game and size, and Howard was a physically gifted player who could impose his will much better than Whiteside at the same stage of development. I think Whiteside is DeAndre Jordan 2.0, and I wouldn't take him that early...Especially over a player like Roy or Johnson.
I don't know. When Bynum first came into the game- He was very unpolished. He had maybe 1 or 2 moves in his rookie season/2nd season.
Dwight was not the Dwight we see today. He gained most his muscle during the 2nd offseason. He only averaged 10 his rookie season because he didn't have alot of post moves as well.
I think Whiteside is being slept on. I seen him play a bit. I'm not saying he has unlimited post moves but I wanna wait before calling him super raw.
Have you seen him play Iggy?
thats some bad comparisons. bynum was big and the lakers werent drafting at number 2. dwight was less of a risk and people knew it which is why he did so well as a rookie. like someone said that is a great way to get fired especially if you pass up a guy who is good right away and becomes great later on. i can see a team along the lines of a okc taking the chance on him but a team like minny would want help right away. not just want they need help right away
I'm not comparing them. I'm just saying there were 2 projects drafted in the top 10 since 2005.
Who said Minny wants help right away? They drafted Rubio who Khan knew was not coming over.
no they were hoping rubio was coming over. they didnt know for sure that he wasnt. no one did. and dwight howard was never considered a project like this guy. not even in the same catagory. hes a project along the lines of thabeet but even lower since hes not playing against the same comp thabeet is. someone like that gets drafted by a playoff team not a lotto team. it would have to be a very bad lotto for someone to take a project that high. and i cant use bynum as a example because bynum was 17 and coming straight out of hs. with a big risk factor like his and the unkown you are asking to get fired drafting him that high over the other players out there
I'd say Whiteside puts his name in this year's draft because he's an 89 baby, putting him in the same age category as most Juniors. I seriously don't think that being at Marshall an extra year can prove much more as he's shown a lot already. He won't risk injury or lack of improvement in performance. HE WILL COME OUT THIS YEAR. Book it. That being said, I think he should be considered a top tier Big man Prospect along the lines of Montejunas/ Favours/ Cousins/ Davis simply because he's SO good at Blocking shots. And in the NBA, a top tier shotblocker is a highly valued commodity. On top of that, Whiteside is the only one of the bunch that could be a CENTRE in the NBA from day one. That'll make GMs drool over him.
The thing that will make Whiteside STAND OUT as a shotblocking prospect is the fact that HE HAS NEVER FOULED OUT and only had 4 fouls twice this season.
That's saying a LOT for a top notch shot blocker, regardless of conference.
I'd say he's not slipping past 10 this year given good workouts and weight gaining.
naw there was a way out of that buyout. if the knicks would have drafted rubio then he would have put up some of his own money for the buyout. it had more to do with what team he was getting picked by. that was talked about way before the draft. everyone already knew what the buyout was gonna be
Who cares anway? BJ, Reke, Curry, and Flynn are pretty dam good so he can stay in Spain for a while. Gotta see this Whiteside kid play before making any kind of judgements on him.
when i see hassan whiteside, i cant help but seeing javale mcgee
lot of upside if
upside=time 2 develop IQ/weight/skills etc + physical attributes
that being said b4 we compare him to Bynum: needs to gain weight
seems like a confident dude on his myspace tho :)
Thabeet went number 2 in what not looks to be a deeper draft than most people expected and was just as raw as this guy and the thing is. If you look at the set for Memphis and what Thabeet has done in limited minutes, in 3 years they may look like they knew what they were doing. When you are talking about legit big men , they are hard to get and also take a while to develop. Look at Bynum. He took about 4 years to become pretty good but now a lot of team would love to have him. I think his position and his potential makes being a 2nd overall prospect legit and plus they put him number one next years draft not number 2 in this one.
the difference is thabeet went to uconn not marshall. thabeet had alot of good games against alot of good teams. im not sure this guy has. and on top of all that thabeet is 7'4
I think y'all are really forgetting Andrew Bynum wasn't nearly as unpolished as this kid. He had an NBA level post game by his 2nd season in the NBA and broke through by year 3...I don't see Whiteside developing a post game at Bynum's level or nearly as fast. He could prove me wrong, but from what I've seen I don't think he'll do it. He seems like he'll develop into a basic catch and finish player and shotblocker...

What does everybody think of this kid? I've never seen him play.
I'm also a big Wolves fan, hate to admit it, but I've come to the conclusion that the team will probably look at four to five guys with their first selection.
John Wall
Evan Turner
Wes Johnson
Al-Farouq Aminu
Xavier Henry
Could Whiteside also be a possible selection for the Wolves? Or is he just another NBADRAFT.NET hyped up product.
