Cousins is averaging 15+ and nearly 10 rebounds in 20 minutes. Favors, Monroe any of the other bigs don't project like that at all. He has a NBA ready body and is producing high volume in the same kind of minutes he would get in the NBA. People need to start moving him up. No way he's around past 10.
"No way he's around past 10."\
Then why didn't you make the topic name "How can Cousins not be in the top 10?"
Anyway, I think it has to do with him being a below average defender more than anything. He's shown that if you leave him in games for too long he'll get in foul trouble, he'll take bad shots/decisions, and be slow in defensive assignments. That's what I've seen from him. He plays like he's tired sometimes & doesn't have the highest basketball IQ right now. As he gets better at those things, I see no reason why he can't be a top 10 pick.
I've watched just about every Kentucky game. I have to agree..I think Cousins is pretty much a lock for the top 10. He is super effecient! Plus he has great size. Young with lots of potential.
I think the thing that is holding him back some is the fact that he is rumored to have a somewhat bad attitude. Cousins has a bad temper. Opposing players can easily get under his skin. You will see Calipari constantly getting on his case. Scouts/GMs may worry some about just how coachable he is going to be in the NBA.
One more negative is that his basketball IQ seems to be below average (even for a Freshman). He really needs to work on passing...mainly finding the open man when he gets double teamed. It seems like he shoots 90% of the time he touches the ball in the post. Sometime you have to kick it back out. His raw talent more than makes up for it though.
I agree he has to work on conditioning, but his fouls have been silly calls that don't project to the NBA and he seems to have adjusted on that the past games. I think his defense is what's made Kentucky better. Seems that other teams are not as willing to try and penetrate when he's in the game.
I really don't get the announcers talking about his temper. Are they serious? What has he done that is so out of control. Emotional yes, and edge yes, but don't we need some players like that? If he can play for Calipari, he can play for anyone
In any event, the real point is to see how someone can score him down as a pick compared to Favors or the young Lithuanian (no way he's top 5).
I used to think Calipari hated his guts earlier in the season lol. He was always yelling at him and benching him. He's improved a good deal though with his decisions as the season has progressed though. He doesn't try to create off the dribble from the high post as much, and seems to accept the challenge of banging down low
if he declares he will be a top 10 pick if he not the gm's are stupid plays like a young jermaine o'neal minus the shot blocking
There's definately concern about Cousins attitude off the court. You'll hear about it come draft time, he doesn't have a great attitude and I don't know if even his teammates would call him the most likeable individual
I think he will likely go in the top ten, but there are definitely going to teams who will hold his maturity against him. Given Larry Bird's draft history, I don't believe he will be interested in a guy who going to need several years to mature and grow into being a professional. After the stuff that has gone on this year, Washington is probably not going to draft someone with character issues.
I think the Clippers would give him a shot as they have never been shy about taking young players with potential. Joe Dumars has been known to roll the dice before. Those would probably be the two teams I would think would be the most likely to go that route.
The Attitude I would not be afraid to take him with the 5th pick. He is a beast but the attitude scares me. He needs to be more humble. I hate Jocks with attitudes
most likely top ten but possible for team to pass him for one of the other 500 PF's.
howm do you figure his fouls wont project into the nba?...you do realize that rookies get the least amount of respect by nba refs right?. you do realize these are just mock drafts by people who are putting up there opinion. its not nba scouts or teams making these mock drafts. and they arent getting any info from nba teams at this point so these mok drafts are no more important then the mock drafts ya'll make. these writers loved some of these guys in hs and they will continue to love them in college if they play great or not. the same with college guys that they have loved last year. why do you think every year alot of picks are wrong?..yeah they get most of the obvious ones right because its common sense. you can also see how they rarely ever put up there old mock drft after the picks have already been made
Well, he's overweight, has a bad attitude and no explosiveness.
If you believe he has an NBA body, you also believe Shawn Kemp had an NBA body with the Cavs.
LawDeeZee, no offense, but you have no idea what you are talking about.
None taken ... but listen to Bill Simmons podcast on ESPN.com from last week when he had ESPN's NBA guru on there and he explained the concern about Cousins attitude and that there's still a fear that he might implode that team with his immaturity. You can choose to believe what you want, but I certainly didn't make up these character concerns.
ive heard that saying adi about zach randolph....almost work for word from jay bilas and a couple other people. they also said he had bad history with the law which is true. not saying cousins is as skilled because hes not but he has very very good talent. hes the most talented freshman big man in fact. i dont think he should come out this year though nor do i think hes a top 5 pick this year
I hope he returns next season..he has a ton of things to work on..if he does that he has a chance to be top 3 in 2011..Right now he's not ready to make an impact in the nba.. But someone will draft him based on his potential....When he was in high school he was like Billy Owens..rebounding the ball and starting the fastbreak...But Coach Cal wants him to play the post...Earlier in the season Cal would bench him when he went into his guard mode..if he returns and continue to listen to coach..Cousins has a chance to be great....
I actually don't hate Cousins. I do think he'll need to have his ass kicked when he gets to the NBA.
Right now, he's a HORRIBLE defender. He doesn't move on pick-and-rolls, he doesn't step out on penetrators. His rebounds come because he stands underneath the basket the same way I do when I'm playing my fourth straight full court pickup game.
He's also turning the ball over far too often and fouling far too often. Fouls in the college game are often the product of a lazy defender more than a budding shot blocker. (I say in the college game because in the NBA, players are better at attacking overactive defenders like Greg Oden.)
And even after saying all that, I think Cousins probably should be a late lottery pick. But no way would I take him ahead Favors, Davis, Patterson, Aldrich or Monroe.
lol..i feel the exact same way abut cousins
That is comical to say he rebounds the way youdo when you're playing your fourth straight pick up game. He's averging nearly 20 rebounds per game on 40 min. Nobody in college has better statistics for points and rebounds in minutes played. So either you think he's just lucky to be standing in the right spot or you must see that he goes and gets the ball. Hardly standing still gets you those sort of rebounds stats.
It's crazy to talk about attitude when nobody can give examples of attitude that is so bad. None of those reporters has done their work on background on him, it's just gossip. He has an edge, don't we want that from a big man?
the attitude thing is legit. they talk about it during the games as well as seeing it. with the antics the throing of the elbow at the louiville game. the pushes during the game. its not like this was just made up. the rebounding in the pick up game is ludacris though..lol
