Get ready for the All-Star Dunk-In!

By Eric_Gordon • January 14, 2010 • 3:43 PM

I have a chance to be in NBA All-Star Dunk-In contest and compete against DeMar DeRozan. The league contacted my agent (Rob Pelinka) and I thought it would be something different for me and an opportunity, so why not do it?

I had a little bit of hesitation at first, but not too much. I know we have a whole bunch of games before the All-Star break and hopefully I'll be playing in the Rookie Challenge. I definitely plan on being in that, so the dunk contest is something I wanted try.

It's definitely cool to be part of All-Star weekend in any way. It was fun to be part of it last year as a rookie. This is my last year to be part of the rookie-sophomore game and hopefully I'll be able to play in several All-Star Games in my career.

I don't think it's going to be a big deal to dunk on Friday and then do it again on Saturday. It's not that big of a deal. You just have to rest a little bit and have fun with it. [The NBA All-Star Dunk-in takes place at halftime of the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge on Feb. 12. The winner of the one-round contest will participate in the Sprite Slam Dunk the following night.]

I don’t know what I'm going to do just yet. Some people don't think I can really jump or I'm that much of a dunker. I'm going to pull out something. I'm going to use these next few weeks to get with family and friends and my teammates to get a lot of ideas. I'll figure out what I'm capable of doing. It'll be a learning experience.

I'm more of a powerful dunker and since I'm a little bit shorter than most guys, it's better to be creative when you're shorter. I've got to learn to be more creative. Vince Carter is probably the best dunker I've seen, but it'll be hard for me to do dunks like him. The dunk contest maybe hasn't been as exciting the last five years or so. Maybe we can change that. We'll see what happens.

As far as our team, it's been tough seeing what happened to Blake. It's a setback because we were hoping he would be able to play. We know he would help our team. Now he's coming back next year. We just hope he comes back strong. We were just trying to get as good a record as we could before he came back. We still think we have a good chance for the playoffs.
