would anyone care if they just did away with the dunk competition?
I was watching the dunk contest on NBA TV...and Vince Carter to me was the pinnacle of dunking, you will never be able to come close to that kind of excitemnent and jaw-dropping originality....Over the years there has been some good stuff, Jrich and Dwight were pretty amazing, but its just hard to excite any more because there have been so many amazing athletes that there isnt much left unseen....However, the draw now is to see a superstar like Lebron, if he drops out i will be greatly dissapointed in him, he owes that type of excitement to the fans
What about a vote like for the All Star game, top 4 vote getters go in.... If a player doesn't want to do it they can refuse but then they feel the disspointment and pressure of the fans
People I want to see in dunk contest
Joe Alexander--dude is a physical freak
Russell Westbrook
Lebron
Derrick Rose
Derrick Favors when hes NBA
Demar Derozan
Its not what it used to be, but at least they got rid of 2 ball.
During a pickup game last summer..We were talking about the dunk competition..I suggested an idea on how it might become more exciting..Some of my boys thought it would be fun ..others thought it was kind of wild..But here's my idea..Remember last season during the dunk contest..Lebron said he MIGHT participate this year...Why not add some other superstar players like Wade,Carter & Kobe (if they're do it,) the past 2 champs Dwight and Nate..and Shannon Brown...1..let every player attempt a dunk in the 1st round..
2.after the 1st round the guys with the highest score can call out any other player he wants..he then must attempt a dunk while the guy he calls out attempts to block it..if his dunk is successful the guy he calls out gets eliminated..but if the guy stops or block his dunk attempt the dunkee gets eliminated and gets 50 points...can u imagine the excitement as the final 2 dunkers GO AT IT? Seeing Lebron trying to stop Kobe? or Wade trying to stop Carter? or Shannon dunking on Dwight? ..a little CRAZY..BUT IT'LL BE FUN TO SEE
another idea could be having the dunk contest like a horse competition..
We just need more creativity .
Gerald Green was very creative when he was in it ..
James White is a very good contest dunker.
I think people like Demar Derozan and Sonny Weems would put on a show .
The guys that arent stars or well known, are a lot of the time the best dunkers.
I would also like to see Russell Westbrook.
Getacomb, chase budinger is pretty much just a shooter at this point in the NBA but he's an pretty great leaper. It's really surprising that he can dunk but he's got a 38.5 vert and he used to be a beach volleyball player. The guy can jump and put it on display at zona more than a few times. I'd pay to see him in the dunk contest.
heres his combine athleticism stats http://www.nbadraft.net/node/6301
Im not really into the dunk contest anymore. I would rather have a 1 on 1 tournament of four players that would be alot more exciting to me. Anyone else like the idea of a 1 on1 tournament instead of dunk contest?
i would like to see a 1 on 1 tournament,
maybe 8 all stars?
Lebron
Kobe
Roy
Durant
Melo
Paul
Williams
Johnson
Or others, these just seem like the best 1 on 1 players to me.
1 on 1 tournament wouldn't happen....If one player beats another than people are gonna say oh he's better than him just because he won the 1 on 1...and its not true

i dont think if a guy beat another that people would automatically think he is better.. do you think nate is a better dunker than dwight?
I like the HORSE thing they did last year with KD, JJ, and OJ
but the dunk contest is still exciting for me...you cant lie its definetly more fun than seeing some shoot 3-pointers 25 times....
The NBA should come up with some better ideas though, more activitys that would appeal the fans..
RUDEBOY.....have you ever seen slam ball, your idea of blocking a dunk was taken by slam ball a good number of years ago. I dig the creativity though the dunk contest needs to get rid of scrubs like nate robinson, for god sake they pretty much changed the dunk contest just for him so he wouldnt look pathetic attempting dunks 20 times. Also where has Gerald Green been I was devistated when he got traded in the KG trade, he was a town favorite in boston
Nope, the dunk contest should be there. If anything do away with that BS H-O-R-S-E competition.
The slam dunk has gotten better over the years when it stalled around 2002. You had a couple of good dunks in the contest after Vince. Guys like Jason Richardson, Josh Smith, Nate Robinson, Andre Iguodala and Dwight Howard have been putting on a show ever since Vince Carter amazed everyone. I think this year could be pretty decent. Hopefully better than last year.

I just don't find it exciting anymore and haven't for a long time. All the dunks have pretty much been done. Now it's all about theatrics and using props. Plus Nate winning after needing 16 attempts aginst Iggy was ridiculous. I'm pretty sure Iggy could have come a little harder if he knew he had a half hour to suck the life out of the building.
There were some good memories like Dr J and michael going from the ft line. But then Brent Barry did it twice in the same comp and put that dunk to rest for good. JR Rider blew me away going between the legs, but now everyone does that and some. Vince Carter was the last guy to really put on a jaw dropping performance in my mind.
I'm just curious how you guys feel about it, do you still enjoy watching it? It seems like 10% of the time I'm excited and the other 90% I just feel embarrassed for the players and the announcers trying to pump everything up.
Maybe they should do it like every 3 years so there is more hype and more time to come with better stuff. Right now I'll take a 3 pt shootout any day over the dunk contest.
