Although I haven't watched Barnes play in an actual game, its hard for me NOT to notice his game in high lights... Is it just me, but his game (and personality) its similar to B-Roy... I think Roy is a lil smoother and Harrison a lil bigger/longer, but gives you the same effect... I don't agree with the 9 athleticism posted on this site for Barnes (compared to Favors its not even close and he has a 9) its more pushing 8 (I'll say 7)...
Y'all think that's a fair comparison?
i agree, both are very controlled and don't force anything but are great in isolation scenarios, from what i've seen barnes isn't as good of a passer.
He's more Luol Deng than Brandon Roy....he doesn't need the ball as much as Roy to be effective from what I've seen. He has far less PG skills, better rebounding ability and more length and athleticism. He'll be a perfect complimentary scorer in the NBA, but one with the ability to hold his own as a 1st option if has to be one.
I think Barnes is a more talented scorer than Deng, but I agree with the comparison iggy...He's not like B-Roy at all to be honest.
Barnes is not like B-roy! he is very athletic actually. i actually watched him play and he is athletic. he is a well-rounded player. he reminds me of a longer, skinnier, version of dwayne wade that dribbles like eric gordon.
So is Roy not athletic??
sort of, but not at the level of most nba sg's
At the combine he had like a 40 in vert. . . . What do the other guys have?
Leaping ability is only a small part of athleticism. Quickness, upper-body strength, lower-body strength, length, lateral quickness and agility among other things make up athleticism as well. O.J Mayo recorded a 41 inch vertical, yet you rarely see him blowing by people.
just because he has a 40 inch vert doesn't mean he's athletic. It means he can jump high. While Roy is no slouch in the athleticism department, he's not a freak or a player who wows people with athleticism like a Josh Smith or Rudy Gay type. Roy is a strong player, who is very intelligent, and always seems to make good decisions. But he's not a superior athlete.
Just for the sake of argument:
Roy can stop on a dime.
He can really jump.
He gets to the rim whenever he wants.
He can contort his body in any way he wants while in the air.
Roy gets to full speed within 3 steps.
He is strong.
What else does he need??
Seems pretty damn athletic to me. . . .
The reason he doesnt "WOW" you with it is because he is more of a PG than a SG. He sits back and waits for the offense to start running. He would rather have a man stay with him and draw a foul than blow by and let the man watch him dunk. He is a very smart player and I respect him for that. I understand what you are trying to say about him but I think you have the wording wrong. I think you were trying to say "Roy isnt as explosive as other SGs in the league."
He really does get to the rim whenever he wants...Clippers you're an idiot if you think "most sg's" are more athletic than him...I can only think of a couple.
roy is actually pretty athletic. everyone i see on here equates a person dunking a lot to being athletic because i notice every person that someone says isnt that athletic is a person who doesnt dunk alot. barnes also reminds me of deng a lot as well as a lil mix of roy and someone says roy isnt as athletic as most nba sg barnes is the same way as far as most nba sf as well. the thing about barnes though is he doesn't impress me as much as some of the past top hs players in the nation. i mean i like his game and hes good but compared to past number one players he wouldnt rank real high to me
He's an above average athlete, but he's not a superior athlete or a high level NBA athlete...let's be honest. All bias aside, Roy is not "pretty damn athletic"...he's a slightly above average athlete.
Barnes is nothing like Luol Deng other than they are both 6'8'', black, and have a similar build. Deng is slow, and a poor jump shooter...nor can he get to the rim like Barnes. I'm a Bulls fan living in Chicago so I've seen Deng enough to know that the Deng/Barnes comparison is weak at best.....
You live in Chicago and think Deng is slow and a poor shooter? You might want to watch some Bulls games, because neither one of those is true at all.
Luol Deng isn't a good 3-point shooter, true, but that doesn't mean that he's a poor jump shooter overall. By that logic, Rip Hamilton could be considered a poor jump shooter as well. And Barnes is getting to the rim at will against high school kids. Just about every wing player in the NBA was able to blow past their high school peers on a consistent basis.
I am thrilled to have Barnes on board with UNC next season. He is a great athlete, and has an outstanding basketball IQ. I am extremely impressed with his ball handling as a 6'8" HS Sr. He plays within the flow of the game and when you go back to look at the box score and see that he poured 30+ points you wonder where it came from because he did it so quietly and did while being a team player. His body type is similar to Luol Deng's, but I think it ends there. As I watched Wesley Johnson tear UNC up at the beginning of the year, that is the type of player I envision Harrison Barnes to be. A do it all mismatch nightmare with no glaring weakness. He will start from day 1 at UNC, he is that good. I can't wait to see him suit up in the uniform!
He is pretty damn athletic.
Also, I have zero bias. I dont lean one way or another. I just speak the truth...
