TEXAS VS UNC

this is a pretty good game so far. ed davis is very active as well as thompson. everytime i watch pttman im more and more impressed. he just dunked on davis off the vert. this guy can get off the ground with all that weight and will try to dunk on anyone. if he loses more weight hes gonna be even more of a terror. he has a nice touch and nice moves. bradley after missing a couple of shots is starting to heat up

Avery Bradley has been great

Avery Bradley has been great so far, pittman has been impressive also but is only playing like 3 minute at a time.

Pittman has impressed me

Pittman has impressed me too, Davis or any other UNC big man cannot compete with him as far as strength goes, and he and Cole Aldrich are the most fundamentally sound big men in this class by far. I had my doubts, but I think he is a legit late 1st rounder. Damian James is a bit of a tweener, but he really capitalizes on his elite rebounding ability for a 6'7'' player and his open court speed. I have seen him out rebound his defender and immediately run the open court multiple times often resulting in UT points, his decision making in the open court could use some improvement, but I think he will be a solid NBA player. Bradley has been really impressive so far, too, this is the only 3rd UT game I've seen, but of them this is by far his best.

just imagin when pittman

just imagin when pittman loses a good 15-20 more pounds. his bounce is vicious already with all that weight and he obviously has a great work ethic losing 80 lbs. bradley is a very very ood defender as well as being a good midrange shooter and lately hes added range to his game

Pittman

I've watched him play over the past 3 years, and honestly I thought he was the next Kevin Bookout, but I must admit he has put in serious effort to his conditioning and with his strength, long wingspan and fundamentals he, in my opinion, has established himself as a legit late 1st rounder. I don't even think he would need to lose 15 more pounds to be effective if he were drafted by a team that likes to use half court offense and as uptempo as this game has been he hasn't been a big guy like Derek Coleman circa 1999, but rather a guy who plays hard and hustles back on D.

i think he needs to lose

i think he needs to lose weight because as all the players will tell you the nba is alot faster then the college game. it may not look it sometimes but it is and that would hurt him alot as far as conditioning and then banging with the big boys. thats if he wants to reah his full potential because you can only reach that if you are in the best shape you can be in.

Texas: Dexter Pittman was a

Texas:

Dexter Pittman was a beast. He lacks a degree of athleticism and quickness, but he did finish strong and dunk quite a bit this game. He has the potential to be a good starter in the NBA. Who will move him off the post? He going to be a foul-drawing magnet..He just has to work on not getting his shots blocked as much.

Avery Bradley reminds me of a more defensive-minded Monta Ellis. He's not that level a scorer, but he's a very similar player. He's quick and athletic, and even though he's only a mediocre ball-handler he has no problems getting to the rim. He does make freshman mistakes like going on 1 on 3 fast breaks, but he has good shot selection and a nice jumper.

Damion James looked good this game too. He's very strong for a projected SF and he's a beast on the glass (15 boards). He's never been the most talented offensive player, but he made most of whatever shots he took (25 points). He's a great defender though, and he'll probably be a beast on that end in the NBA too.

J'Covan Brown. Wow. My 1st time watching him play, and he's a good looking talent scoring the ball. He's not quite a true PG, but he is a talented player. He reminds me of Jeff Teague.

Jordan Hamilton had a terrible game, but I looked past that lol. He has a lot of potential as a scorer. His shot wouldn't fall (some in embarrassing fashion) but its clear he has a good shot. His game reminds me of Von Wafer.

UNC:

Ed Davis continues to play good basketball. Pretty good rebounder. He's good at getting put backs and is a good finisher down low despite a lack of muscle. He seems to understand what angles he needs to put the ball in the rim. He has 1 or 2 shots in his arsenal that are just flat out unblockable lol. I don't see him as a starter at the NBA level still though, even though he can develop into a good backup with more polish.

They need to find a PG because Larry Drew is not a starter at the college level, even though he would make a good change of pace with his quickness and D. He's an alright passer, but he does turn it over alot too.

Tyler Zeller is AMAZING on offense! Why won't they play him more?! I truly believe he's better than Ed Davis.

Dexter Strickland has alot of ability in the long term. He's got some potential as a scorer. He's got the ability to be like Wayne Ellington.

Ginyard is the perfect role player. I like his game, even though he made more mistakes than he usually does this game.

Henson is already a presence on D, as he showed this game on the ball and with his spectacular blocks off of it. He just isn't there yet on offense. He's a little bit of a project.

mediocre ball handler?..i

mediocre ball handler?..i mean bradley isnt a great ball handler but hes definatly not mediocre. ive watched all of texas games and hes handled it pretty well each game. very smart wit it. the one on three thing happens wit all guards fr-sr. henson 's d actually needs work. dont let the help side blocks fool you he gets pushed around on the block every game and a big man that has good foot work scores on him constantly

im not a big fan of larry

im not a big fan of larry drew but to say hes not a starting pg on the college level is wrong. im not sure if you are judging by this game or not but drew has played very well at the pg position with a 3 to 1 ast to turnover ratio which is very very good even for a sr. oon top of averaging 7 ast a game. hes actually doing better at the pg postion then a couple unc pg as freshmen who ended up playing in the nba. id be happy to have 9pts 7ast and a steal out of a freshman pg

He's a very average

He's a very average ball-handler to me. He didn't do very much creating for himself (unless he had a full head of steam) or changing directions with the ball. He actually got the ball taken from him twice by Drew and Strickland.

I think that UNC system has more to do with his numbers rather than him being a truly good PG. He played good in the Michigan State game, but other than that, when against a reasonably good team has he impressed you?

Actually its not like saying

Actually its not like saying that John Wall shouldn't be starter because he had 7 turnovers, because he had a much bigger impact on the game than Drew and his 5 assist/turnover did. He probably scored like 20 pts in every game he had those turnovers in and probably had more than 7 assists to make up for the turnovers as well.

yeah key word is every game..you cant judge bradley or drews game off of one game..drew has been a very good pg this year and although hes not as good as wall he puts up the same amount of ast with less turnovers. hes been a very good starting pg. gotta look at the whole picture not just this one game for both players

naw ive watched there

naw ive watched there games..hes actually a pretty good pg..not great but good. hes no worst then felton, cota and alot of other freshmen. im not sure if youre forgetting but most freshmen dont come in and play great. reguardless of the systems it takes a good pg to have a good ast to turnover ratio. most freshmen dont come in and do what wall is oing. most put up the pts drew is puting up but with alot less ast and turnovers

First off, Larry Drew is a

First off, Larry Drew is a 2nd year player. Secondly, Drew averages 3 turnovers a game....that's not that good. Ty Lawson, Felton, and Ed Cota never had that high a turnover rate. He's got a 2:1 assist/TO ratio with 6 assists, which is very much the norm for any PG in UNC's system. The guys I mentioned had better ratios than that. I think that any relatively decent PG can do what Drew has done in UNC's system. He's never impressed me that much as a starter. Wins and losses have proven that, and his lackluster performances against good competition has as well, besides the Michigan State.

And all of your analogies are wrong lol...that's not like saying John Wall wouldn't be a good player if he didn't play for Calipari. It's quite obvious from Wall's production and talent that he's a player no matter what system he would be in.

I watched this game off &

I watched this game off & on.

Larry Drew is a Sophomore.  I think he is a solid starting PG.  He isn't spectacular but this is his first year leading a team in college.  Against strong competition that is a lot to ask of such a young player.  He isn't flashy but he quietly gets the job done.  He is a pretty smart player that usually takes care of the ball.  Pretty solid passer too.

Jordan Hamilton I think could be a very very good prospect.  He is going to be a 1st round pick in 2011 probably.  I was also impressed with J'Covan, he has good rotation on his shot.

Pittman really impressed me.  I agree with those that think he is a 1st round pick.  If he loses 20 more pounds & continues to build muscle/burn fat in the process he is going to be a monster.

Texas is LOADED with talent.  They are deep too. Kansas better watch out!

and its not the systems that

and its not the systems that make the unc pg good its the players. these pg were good before they got there..larry was rated the number 4 pg in his class and was known as a good passer and a good pg

2008 Scout.com HS Basketball Rankings (full list):
Pos: PG Pos Rank: #4 Pos Rating:

Scout.com Player Evaluation:

Size for Position

The son of the former NBA guard, Drew is that rare commodity – a young point guard with talent and an understanding for the position. Makes great decisions and pinpoint passes. He has an accurate outside shot and can get his shot. Should be a big time high-major prospect

so no any pg that plays at unc could do what he does. they have to be a good pg which is what unc recruits

weaklink as far as

weaklink as far as what?..other than thompson and thompson who has played overall better? i can say maybe ginyard but his defense hasnt been what people thought it would be. graves is the weakest link out of there starters. if he's a fringe starter with what hes doing then theres alot of fringe starters on alot of ranked teams out there who aren't doing as well as he is.

I think North Carolina's
I think North Carolina's biggest weakness is a true legit starting SG/SF.  They need a good scoring wing player.  Ginyard is mainly a defender & Graves just isn't that big of a factor.

I can see where you are
I can see where you are coming from Iggy because Drew doesn't really take over game & most of the time he doesn't stand out.  However, I think a lot of teams in the ACC wish they had Larry Drew starting for them at PG.

Graves actually provides

Graves actually provides shooting and defense that they need in the starting line-up...Drew does all of what Strickland can do, except he's a better passer and much worse scorer. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Strickland took Drew's job some time in conference play...

naw strikland is more of a

naw strikland is more of a sg then a natural pg like drew. and graves is ok but is the weakest link. hes only out there because there really is no other option. henson is too young and isnt ready, and drew is not a much worst scorer...where are you coming from with this?..strickland only gives about 3ppg and even wit the same amount of minutes he doesnt score as much as larry. not sure where u coming up with that info

You don't think Strickland is a better scorer than Larry Drew??? And Strickland plays almost double the minutes of Strickland (13 min to 25 min).....so they don't play the same amount of minutes

Strickland is super quick but he isn't as smart at running a team as Drew is.  Plus Larry Drew is a better shooter.

He hasn't scored more in

He hasn't scored more in hardly any games so far, but I don't think there's any doubt that he more of a scoring threat than Drew. You said it yourself that Strickland was a SG, and if your as undersized as he is playing the SG you have to be a pretty good scorer. Larry Drew isn't even considered a scorer. I don't now what to say if you don't think that Strickland provides more of a scoring threat than Drew. I'm sure even Roy William would tell you that...

how u figure...there is no

how u figure...there is no proof that hes more of a scoring threat...not when given minutes, nor the fg percentages nor the per 40min a game so what are you basing it on?..because hes a shooting guard?..that makes no sense. just because you are a shooting guard doesnt mean youre more of a scoring threat. he plays sg sometimes because hes not that good as a pg right now. and drew can play sg beter then him right now actually but then who is gonna run the point?..thats why drew would play pg over him and if there was a pg better then drew there then drew would play more sg then dexter

He did score more this game

He did score more this game than Drew did, so I could've used this game as an example, but I won't....But I don't know what to say if you think Drew is a better scorer than Strickland. And my logic was put like this, how many SG's with PG size aren't pretty good scorers at this level of basketball, meaning major college ball? He's a pretty good scorer, at least better than Drew is. Maybe its because I've seen Strickland play more including HS and I've only seen Drew play in college, when he hasn't provided a true scoring threat. But I think that Strickland is the better natural scorer between the 2....

him and drew are one inch

him and drew are one inch apart.and that would make no sense if you used one game. and being a scoring threat in hs is different then being one in college and right now drew is a better scoring threat..sorry but thats just the way it is right now..im not even a fan and lknow that and a fan or them even told you. on top of the stats telling you im not sure what other proof you need. youv come up with zero proof of whos the better scorer except from what strickland did in hs. and if you think 3ppg is a pretty good scorer then i really dont know what to tell you..thats pretty low standards

He's averaging 3 pts in 13

He's averaging 3 pts in 13 mins a game....Idk what them being 1 inch apart has to do with anything I've said, but once he gets more minutes, which will come sooner rather than later this year I can guarantee you that, he'll prove to be a better scorer than Drew. I don't have proof of him being a better scorer, but I do think he is a better scorer than Drew is though. Stats can be misleading when trying to see who's a better scorer than who, especially when the playing time gap is as big as this one is. It's similar to how I think that Nick Young is a better natural scorer than Mike Miller is, despite Miller averaging more points. Or how Ben Gordon is a better scorer than Stuckey, but Stuckey averages more points..

both of those players have

both of those players have had big games though. i can understand you think hes a better scorer just because you think he is. but right now in reality he isnt. from watching him and talking to 2 other unc fans they dont think hes a better scorer either. personally i think the better scorer is the person who can score in a couple of ways or great at scorering in a particular way. other then speed strickland has no other scoring abilities that are better then drew. hes a below average shooter and cant get his shot as easy because hes not as good of a ball handler. he gets the lil min he gets for a reason which is he's just not ready. its liek i said with another guy about henson when people were saying he's gonna start at the 3 because of what he did in open gym. he still gets the same minutes he got after game 2 because he's just not ready

You don't think that

You don't think that Strickland's game today or his game against Michigan State were good games? He showed the ability to create he own shots in both games...I'm telling you there's a reason that he was recruited by Roy Williams...Don't say I didn't warn you when he proves to be a better scorer as he gets more minutes.

yeah he played well but when

yeah he played well but when you judge a player are you suppossed to judge there game by 2 games or there whole body of work?..and roy recruited him for what he hopes he will do in the future. im pretty sure he didnt expect him to be a big time scorer right now and if he did then he must be very dissappointed. and minutes only get harder to get come conference play because thats when the rotation tightens up and the starters get more minutes then they got out of conference. even if you double his minutes he averages what 6ppg?..and tripple that and he finally averages as much as drew

I'm sure that the ACC

I'm sure that the ACC doesn't get much tougher than Michigan State and Texas..he played his 2 best games against the 2 toughest teams in their schedule. We'll see though, I just see more potential scoring the ball with Strickland than I do with Drew, even though I think Drew has more PG skills.

Nope not at all

Not since he is a poor ball-handler and functions mostly as a spot-up shooter. I wouldn't disagree if you said he was a better spot-up shooter than Strickland though.

yes it does get tougher

yes it does get tougher because the coaches know more about you..why do you think a team will beat a highranked team out of conference then lose to a unranked team in coference.. im not sure if you played organized basketball but a coach will tell you that the conference season is alot harder then the ut of conference season. teams are better prepared and they know they plays youre coach is gonna run because they played against them for years. thats why alot of player stats go down once conference play starts. as far as mcdonald you cme up with proof on why he isnt a better scorer just like i came up wit proof that strickland isnt a better scorer then drew. the only thing dexter has shown in 9 games that he's better at then drew is he's quicker. and im sure if someone though mcdonald was better ou would come up with proof that he isnt( just like you just did with saying he's just a spot up shooter and poor ball handler
