head scratching contracts
What contracts made you scratch your head when you heard about them? I don't just mean in hindsight playing monday morning quarterback. I mean when you first read about it you were like "what is that team thinking"?
I'll give my first one for consideration:
Brian Grant 7 years 88 million from Miami. The previous season he averaged 7.5 pts and 5.5 rebs with Portland. He opted out of a contract that was to pay him 8 mill a year, My reaction was WTF? Portland then offered him a contract for 10 mill a year, my reaction was WTF? Then Pat Riley down in Miami said he was the key to a title and threw the big contract at him (keep in mind Pat also signed Juwon Howard to a 110 million dollar deal only to have the league rescind it since the heat didn't have the salary cap space), my reaction was what world am I on that a solid but unspectacluar pf who just averaged 7 & 5 the year before is being paid like an all-star?
Any other ones?
Everyone thought they were good a couple of years ago. Not so much.
I don't think anyone could question the Baron or brand contracts at the time they were made. Brand was a all-star adn Baron was playing some of his best ball in the nba at the time. Maggette was an odd one curtesy of Chris Mullin.
man, i want brian grants agent!
Turkolglu's contract is looking pretty bad now.....
Jared Jeffries' $30 Million Dollar contract with the Knicks... That's a huge load considering how he doesn't know how to shoot the ball... It would have been understandable if it were a player capable of scoring like Jarvis Hayes or whoever but this guy made me think "whoa?"...
As long as he is in the NBA I believe every player in college deserves a shot at the NBA. The guy is soooooo uncoordinated it amazes me. Someone once said "He can't defend himself" LOL.
Sam Dalembert: 4 years, 43 mil (and he's HORRIBLE)
Andrei Kirilenko: 4 yrs, 63 mil
Erick Dampier: 4 yrs, 41 mil
Bobby Simmons: 3 yrs, 30 mil
Kenyon Martin: 4 yrs, 59 mil
i think with some of the players they arent thinking about how good a player was or what they ment to there team at the time. like ak47. at the time he was playing great basketball being a threat to do alot of things and guard 3 positions and was thought to only be get ting better. the year dalem got his contract he was playing very very well. contracts are given to the player based on how they played recently and based on that what you project for them to do in the future... for some of the older people on here do you remeber ike austin?..in his contract year he balled out of his mind and played liek one of the best centers in the nba...after he signed it all stopped. jeropme james was doing work in seattle and after he signed ...same thing happened. in some case it is a head scratcher but it others based on the players production, need of the team, and inability to replace what they bring it makes senses
But Jared Jeffries hasn't done anything noteworthy to have him signed a $30 Million Dollar deal... AK47 has a multi-facet game and he has been pretty much versatile...
i think with him it had more to do with his skill set and the potential teams saw in him..truth be told other then his contract there are teams interested in him because they still think he can do something if given time liek frye. personally im not a big fan of him though
