Cincy vs. Vandy
I expected Vandy to win this game...obviously that didn't happen. Cincy was too tough & active on defense.
This is sort of an overview of what I observed:
This is only the 2nd time I have ever seen Lance Stephenson play (I saw him play once in high school) so take that for what its worth.
Lance Stephenson did not look good at all. What is all the hype about? He has a lot to learn. He is a physical specimen but I didn't see any major skills. His shooting was off. His defense was ok. He looked like the 6th or 7th best player in this game truthfully. I don't see him being a 1st round pick. I doubt he even enters the draft after this year. It is early though & he can still improve quickly. When Vaughn got in foul trouble in the first half Stephenson played significant minutes at PG. He did a solid job. In other words he ran the team effectively. He didn't turn the ball over but at the same time he didn't really penetrate much or make things happen.
Most people know about Gates & Vaughn so I won't discuss them much. Gates was a beast this game. He had his way in the post. Vaughn had a very quiet game. He got in foul trouble early. This Cincinnati team will be dangerous late in the year if Stephenson can take his game up a notch. This team is pesky on the defensive end. It seems like the majority of their players have very quick hands.
John Jenkins lead the nation in scoring in high school last season. He averaged something crazy like 42 points a game & 62% from the field. He looked pretty good this game. He has a lot to learn though like all freshman. He relies primarily on the 3pt shot to score. He is a lethal shooter which is exactly what Vandy desperately needed.
Ogilvy was alright. I have never been that high on him. If I was an NBA GM I wouldn't draft him in the 1st round & I probably wouldn't even draft him period. I just can't imagine him making much of an impact in the NBA. He does have a pretty descent jumpshot for a big man. In the pros the only way he will be able to score is off put backs right under the rim or wide open midrange jumpers. He is effective in college mainly due to his weight...he is physical.
Jeffry Taylor is an often overlooked pro prospect. He is a great athlete with major hops. I would like to see him more aggressive on offense. Vandy needs a leader and he should step up to the challenge. He has the skills to shoot over virtually any defender. Not the greatest shooter but is ok. He will be a 1st round pick whenever he declares. His athleticism is rare.
Overall I like this Vanderbilt team. I think they will make the NCAA tourney. They have a lot of length. They play solid defense. Only problem is they stuggle a lot on offense (they did all last season too). This team will rack up plenty of ugly wins.
MAN!!! I wish I could've watched this game....both teams have some NBA prospects that are interesting. But that Jeff Taylor, John Jenkins combo is going to play off of each other very well by conference schedule time. I think Lance Stephenson is going to be one of those players that fits into an NBA offense better than one in college. But yea, he's a 2011 prospect anyway. I didn't expect him to be one and done.
What did my boy Deonta Vaughn do?
Trust me Gator...Lance will show up!
He's so OVER RATED!! He's no where near a NBA prospect, his dad messed his train of thought up making him believe he is the best player ever out of New York!!!, Never!! He's not no way near better than Lenny Cooke nor Kenny Satterfield, let alone compared to the great guards out of NYC. Kenny Anderson is still the best guard ever out of NYC. He would be a fool to test the NBA waters this summer. He's not ready for the NBA, not today nor tomorrow!! Born Ready???? He was Born Ready to have a Criminal Record!!!
Have you seen Lance play in High School? If So? How many times live?
Stephenson's offensive talent is undeniable...he might not be the best thing out of New York, that's probably very true, but he has a chance to be a great NBA player, something that Telfair, Kenny Anderson, and Cooke and Satterfield didn't accomplish. So he might not be right now, but he has the potential to be a dominant scorer in the NBA. With that said, he should wait until 2011 to declare.
I saw Stephenson's game a little different. He showed he's a great ball handler with either hand and uses change of speeds extremely effectively. Uses head fakes and crossovers to get to the basket. Shows very good strength for a 2 guard. Hold the ball way too long, and really seems to look for the pass that leads straight to a basket, and is content to keep it other wise. He shows good athleticism, not spectacular, but has a very mature game, even though he's not a mature player.
I like Yancy Gates the best, mismatch potential wise
Yo ,iguodala9 i 100% agree with your thought on Lance being better in the NBA then college. The NBA allows players to do more one on one which is his strength. but i don't know if he will be dominant, why do you think that?
I seen him play in High School, Yes. I'm an Assistant Coach at a Big East School currently ranked in the top 5 in county. We actually recuited this kid for a second. I mean a quick second. His Dad had a nerve to say if we would give him a job, he would come, I got up and walked out of there home. He is using his son as a meal ticket and not having his best interest at heart. This kid can barely have a conversation without cursing or say"Uhm, ya mean!! This is what's wrong and why David Stern wants these kids in College at least for a year. He wouldn't have lasted past a NBA workout. I seen him play in the New York watered down public league. When he played against legit schools that where not from New York, he struggled. His shot selection struggled and he constantly showed fustration if he didn't touch the ball. If I was his teamate and he took a lot of bad shots, I wouldn't pass him the ball either.
The point I'm trying to prove is, the kid has talent. He needs to be locked in a gym, with no hype men(his dad or boys) and just workout to improve his fundamentals so he can become a pro. He has a pro body already but his motor skills are not developed at all. Talent will get you a job, but hard work and dedication will keep that job..
I watched him play, and I think he'll be dominant because I've seen him take over games offensively and defensively. He has a streaky yet great jumper, a nasty 1st step that's quick and strong, and he's got all the physical tools you need to be good (length, frame, size, speed, quickness and decent athleticism). And he's competitive, but that can get the best of him times. But he's got the potential to have a Paul Pierce type career. He's going to be a beast...
"Paul Pierce type career" "He is going to be a beast"
Wow iggy.... I don't know. You have seen him play a lot more than I have but I didn't like what I saw tonight. I didn't see a future star in the nba. His jumper didn't look good today but he could've just had one of those off nights. Still, Stephenson has to improve a lot.
Paul Pierce type career
Paul Pierce is a 6'7 230 small forward headed to the hall of fame
I think Ogilvy is better suited for the PF spot NBA
Gator- He shows promise and believe me this guy came a long way. When he first jumped on the scene he was a 6'4 PG... Going up against OJ at ABCD... Going to the 9th grade!!!... He put A LOT of work into his frame and jumper, you will be an idiot to say he doesn't work hard... He has the skills, just got to put it all together...
Now, RoundballGuru- I would agree with some of the things you said regarding his f father and the folks around him, but apperantly you haven't watched him so far this year huh? This guy is a model teammate on the court, doesn't do too much (only time I see im take a bad shot is when the clock is running down), NO YELLING, NO BAD BODY LANGUAGE, just playing solid basketball... EVERYTHING that EVERYONE has said about him negatively isn't a factor anymore. The biggest thing I see is he isn't asserting himself on the court enough. He's trying to find that balance between being the man and a teammate... But I'm certain when he gets it he's going to show his value... 4-10, Only 8 points? That will change, just like his demeanor did....
Lance Will Be A Pro, It's Going To Take him Some Time To Really Shine,But He Will Be In The NBA Next Year.
yeah i watched the game and saw something different too..lance didnt play great but he didnt play bad either....he didnt play any wort then x.henry played against memphis. hes not great on defense but he does work hard at it which is a plus. his handles are very good and he is a very good passer. i dont expect him to dominate mot games but he has the ability to score and has a pretty good basketball iq. cinncy looked like a street ball team to me though. they were going up and down and everyone seemed to be looking for there own shot , but they won so i guess thats all that matter. now they play against my terps which should be a very interesting game. and tuck ive heard from my friends who have watched his games that he's been a model citizen also and hasn't been pouting or yelling( might have something to do that hes playing wit men and they might knock him out..lol) but it seems hes starting to grow up which is good
hes different now, no yelling, not a selfish player anymore, playing good defense. he only average 10 ppg so far as a freshmen, but the most important......hes now a "TEAM MATE". i like that, im impress.
lance will be a PRO!
i feel you gatorheels...i was expecting more from favors and monroe everytime i watch there games...gotta remeber they are young and still learning
