Who do the Celtics need?

The Celtics have the most complete team in the NBA....However, it looks like the still have some needs, primarily athleticism....If the Celtics could add one player to their team, who do you think would be the perfect fit(please dont say Kobe or Lebron, Im talking about complimentary players)

I'm going with Jamario Moon, he would give them athleticism lenth and good defense, all while fully embracing the complimentary role

Honestly... I don't think

Honestly... I don't think this team should make any moves, unless someone gets injured. They're already good enough as it is to compete for and maybe win the championship.

IF they're going to make a move though, it'd have to be through a trade and it'd better be a smart trade in regards to salary because they really don't have much wiggle room now or in the future. They're actually over the cap as it stands. The salary cap is at $57.7 million this season and will be even lower next season. Here's a list of the players that are currently under contract and who'll be under contract when the season ends:

Player 2010/2011
Paul Pierce $21,513,521 (Has an opt out clause this summer, but I doubt he opts out)
Ray Allen $0 (Unrestricted free-agent... $18,776,860 coming off the books)
Kevin Garnett $18,800,000
Rasheed Wallace $6,322,320
Kendrick Perkins $4,390,208
Brian Scalabrine $0 (Unrestricted free-agent... $3,413,793 coming off the books)
Glen Davis $3,300,000
Eddie House $0 (Unrestricted free-agent... $2,862,000 coming off the books)
Rajon Rondo $9,000,000 (His re-up kicks in and it's a HUGE jump)
Tony Allen $0 (Unrestricted free-agent... $2,500,000 coming off the books)
Marquis Daniels $0 (Unrestricted free-agent... $1,990,000 coming off the books)
JR Giddens $0 (Team option at $1,028,880)
Shelden Williams $0 (Unrestricted free-agent... $825,497 coming off the books)
Bill Walker $0 (Team option at $736,420)
TOTALS: $63,326,049

As you can see, they really don't have much room salary cap wise to do anything. This is why I like the trade for Nocioni right now because they'd be using a few of their expiring contracts to pick up a player who could really help their team win this season. The Celtics will be over the cap next summer even with their expiring contracts (Including Ray Allen's which is huge), especially when you consider the league salary cap will be lower next season than it is this season. Every team has the right to re-sign their own free-agents, but the Celtics will not have many options when it comes to signing other free-agents. They'll have the mid-level exception, but still... They're already paying a luxury tax as it is. They won't be able to use the bi-annual exception since they used that on Daniels this season and you can't use it two seasons in a row. There's also the minimum salary exception, but they're not going to get a really good player with that. That's why I think it's smart to get something for a few of those expiring contracts now because it's not like letting them expire will open up salary cap space this summer since they'll already be over the cap.

They cant get Moon so i dont

They cant get Moon so i dont see why hes mentioned. However I do think they could get Gerald Green back. He couldnt crack the rotation right now but his athleticism and size could help against Cleveland and Orlando if he showed some of that promise he had while previously being on Boston.

They could sign Green for

They could sign Green for the minimum, but what's he going to bring to the table that Tony Allen or JR Giddens can't?

He has 2+ inches on Giddens

He has 2+ inches on Giddens and Allen. Giddens lacks on D and Allen is always injured. Boston is an older team and Rashard Lewis and Lamar Odom create matchup problems for the celtics as well as every other team in the league. They will have to go through one or both Orlando and LA to win another championship.

I don't see Gerald Green as

I don't see Gerald Green as a piece that'll help them win a title this season, so they'd just be wasting money and a roster spot... I doubt he'd even crack their rotation. Even at this stage in his career, he's still about potential. Tony Allen is always injured, but when he's healthy... He plays lockdown D. Giddens and Walker are already they're young athletic guys with potential.

Boston also has enough

Boston also has enough experienced guys to wait on him for another couple of years. The big 3 is getting old.

Im not saying that he can

Im not saying that he can contribute immediately by any means. I'm just saying that he may get back on track in Boston because that was the only place that he didnt look lost on the court.

So basically they'd be

So basically they'd be signing him NOW for his potential and not to help this season? Why'd they do that when nobody in the market is hot for him right now? They could sign him this summer.

If they're going to add a

If they're going to add a piece now, it should be someone that'll at least crack their rotation and help them win the title. The Big Three are getting old, which makes all the more sense to sign a player that can help them win now.

I dont see many people that

I dont see many people that can come in and crack their lineup. If he plays as well as he did in his rookie season for the Celts i think he could earn some minutes. His size would be valuable as a defender if anybody gets in foul trouble.

I think Nocioni fits most of

I think Nocioni fits most of what they could really use... 1. Defender 2. Scrappy/Hustler 3. Outside shot ~ all preferably at the wing position

Basically they need James Posey of two years ago- Nocioni could be that guy. I don't think that they could work anything out, but I think if the Celtics could get their hands on Marvin Williams, he'd be the best fit since he's added the 3 pt shot.

I'd also say the Rockets have two guys that could fit the role: Battier or Ariza... Another two guys they wouldn't be able to pry away, but that'd be a good fit: Mikael Pietrus or Matt Barnes

One final possibility: Thabo Sefolosha if he can shake off his slow start...

They might as well make a

They might as well make a move for Brand. Brand would fit well in their system especially if KG, Sheed or Perkins gets injured that could be devastating. Philly cant utilize him and his production and value has slipped enormously.

Green was cut traded by the

Green was traded by the Celtics and T-Wolves, and waived by the Rockets and Dallas didn't re-sign him. I don't see the Celtics picking him up again regardless of what he did his rookie season.

Nocioni would crack their lineup AND contribute. He'd do all the dirty things like Posey use to do... Playing rough/intense D, taking charges and hitting the corner 3. I think trading the expiring contracts of T. Allen, Giddens and Scalabrine (three guys who do nothing at the moment) to bring in Nocioni would make them a lot better.

Brand is making like $15

Brand is making like $15 million this season... Boston wouldn't even poke him with a 100 foot rod.

Gerald Green

The celtics shouldn't consider getting him again. He can score, but he plays no defense. He is worse than Tony Allen for the Cs because Tony plays defense. Also Bill Walker is better, and he will play the three in garbage time when Scalabrine is healthy. Plus, Tony Allen, Giddens and Walker only will ever play garbage minutes in blowouts this season barring injury. Maybe one of them will play at the end of the first half at the end of the season. They wouldn't sign Green to sit on the bench to play garbage minutes if 2 players ahead of him got hurt. Also, what has Green done in the NBA that is worth mentioning. The only times he ever did anything was in meaningless games on a bad team with nobody better to play.

Call me crazy, but I think

Call me crazy, but I think they need to re-sign Shelden Williams, he has shown some promise and they could still probably resign him for pretty cheap, I doubt he'll ever live up to his #5 expectations, but I still think he could be a good player in the league.

I think it could be highly

I think it could be highly beneficial for Gerald Green to spend some time around Ray Ray and Pierce, not to mention Doc and the defensive asst coach... Maybe then he could start reaching his ridiculous potential (on defense too)

Gerald Green

He could learn a lot under Kevin Garnett's tutelage... He could improve his basketball IQ under guys that really know how to work hard... He could learn the mental aspect of the game if he goes to the C's... Gerald Green looks good on a green uniform anyways...
