Has anyone on this forum ever played with/against a current/former NBA player?
After being on this forum for a few months, I've noticed that there are alot of people on here who play or have played basketball at a competitive level. And it made me wonder if anyone on this forum has played against an NBA player.
I once played a pick-up game with Sean Banks. For those that don't remember, he played for Memphis and was named ESPN national freshman of the year in 2004 after averaging 17 points and 6 rebounds. He was academically ineligible the following year, so he entered the NBA draft and subsequently went undrafted. He had numerous run-ins with the law while in high school, and has always been considered a headcase.
Anyways, I played one pick-up game with him during the summer of 2002. It wasn't really a serious game, and the only reason I played was because somebody got hurt during the previous game. It was the first time I had ever seen somebody with his talent play live, and he truly amazed me. He made 3's off of the dribble and got to the rim at will. He talked trash and got in his opponents' faces throughout the game, which I thought was cool since I was only 12. He passed me the ball one time over the course of the game and it bounced off my hands, which was followed by him sucking his teeth :(
Do you guys have any stories? I'm just curious.....
I played against Gilbert Arenas , Tyson Chandler and Dijion Thompson in highschool. Gilbert and Dijion didn't really blow me away too much. They were very good on some good teams (Dijion played at Redondo Union and Arenas played for Grant in Hollywood), but I just didn't think were gonna be nba level.
Tyson I remeber quite well because his school was ranked number 1 in the state and he was already a huge name in los angeles. There was a 60 Minutes epsiode done on him before he had ever played a single highschool game. I remember there were scouts all over the gym. They were blowing everyone out by 40 in the 64 team tournament we met them in. We got them in the elite 8 and we jumped out to a 7-4 lead and then are captain got into it with Tyson over a hard screen. They called a couple of techs and head to clear the court for a few minutes. We were all pumped like f.uck these guys they don't want us. We proceeded to get our but's kicked the rest the game and lost by 20.
And for those that don't know who Dijion Thompson is, he played at UCLA and one year with the Suns. I also played againsr Desmond Penigar who played at my junior college and then went on to play one year with the Magic.

I went a clinic at a rec center a few years ago and they said it would have a guest clinician.... It turned out to be Gheorge Muresan. He was playing in pickup games and was a beast. He was treating it like an NBA game. He dunked on some 5 foot 6 kid and the kid was about to cry. He swatted my shot with his frickin elbow.. As far as real competion I've played against Justin Anderson from Montrose Christian. He had no business being at the same camp. He tried to dunk on everyone when he drove and suceeded virtually everytime. I have also had friends play against him who have just gotten utterly dominated... A few of my friends also played against Scottie Reynolds from Villanova. He went to Herndon high school which a few mintues from my house. He was an absolute beast in high school. Have also played against Mike Davis from Illinois. He was really really raw in high school and really just had size.
i see bum sauce is here under another name..lol
I played AAU ball and High School ball here in WV. I played against OJ Mayo more than a couple times. On his team was Patrick Patterson. He is the star at Kentucky. I played against them in a scrimmage for my HS and played about 4 games against them through AAU. In the scrimmage, Patterson was the the star but in real games, Mayo dominated. He was amazing. Unfortunately, I had to guard him because I played SG but was taller, stronger, and faster than out PG. Mayo was the PG for his team and the SG was a little bit smaller and was primarily a shooter. Like you would imagine, Mayo, torched me. Since I played him 4 times that summer, I guess I caught him on a bad day. Every time I guarded him, we would pretty much talk trash the whole game. I held him to 9 points and 3 rebounds but he had 8 assist. You have to remember, he was averaging about 30 and 12 for the summer. Anyway, I was never considered a jumper because I am about 6' and white. He took me to the basket, in the final minutes of a game, we were up by 2 and attempted to shoot a layup, because he blew right by me, but I pinned his layup on the backboard and he turned around and elbowed me in the face. We won the game but I was ejected because I punched him right above his eye. He got a small cut and I had to have surgery because he closed off my left airway. That was the only game we won against his team that summer. Its pretty stupid but it was my favorite game of that year. LOL. There is my story.
i played vs j.r smith my freshman year of high school
AAU after my senior year of high school basketball, it was our first weekend of tournaments, and I remember feeling really good about our team winning twice handily on Friday. So Saturday I was feeling really good, watching the game before us and had no idea who we played, and all of a sudden during a late timeout I see Cole Aldrich come up and do a sick reverse dunk from behind the backboard. My heart basically dropped into my stomach. He hit a couple 3s on us I believe..atleast 1 three, with a bunch of dunks and alleyoops of course. His team slaughtered us a couple minutes into the 2nd half because we only had 6 guys and endurance kind of kicked in...I still think it would've been a legit game if our team had 9-10 guys lol, but it was still a great experience to be able to play against him especially now that he's a near-lock for the lottery next year. Never saw someone like him up close and in person, the guy is an absolute monster, and to see him have a breakout game against North Carolina in the Final Four was so sweet to watch, and last season of course when he broke out.
I played at a gym out here in vegas with Marcus Banks a couple months before he got drafted we won every game theywerent even close he was doing what ever he wanted to on the court who whould have thought he would be a lottery pick and then his career would be as bad as it is now. On a side not Floyd Mayweather was there to he was playing ball.
I've played with Shawn Kemp, Penny Hardaway, TJ Ford, Daniel Ewing, Taliek Brown, Anthony Goldwire, and a few others that I can't think of off the top of my head. I've also run into Orlando Woolridge, Shane Battier and Bob Sura. I've also played with a couple of Harlem Globetrotters who's names I forget and some NFL players as well.
I used to work out with Goldwire.
Played with Penny the summer after his injury. He was working with John Lucas here in Houston.
Played with Shawn Kemp about 5 years ago. He was fat as &$#%#&@!, but was crossing people over and raining 25 footers like they were free throws in an open gym. I caught a dunk on the break and he told me I had hops. I said thanks and went to over to the water fountain. Some kid asked him what his vert was in his prime and Kemp said "54"! For reference, Dwight Howard put up a 37" at the Nba combine. Kemp was probably a bit lower than that in his prime. A 54" vert would put his chest over the rim. I'll never know why he felt the need to lie to that kid.
Played against Ford and Ewing a couple of times.
Met Woolridge at a Mexican restuarant, Battier at a bar and have run into Sura a few times. His girl is one of the hottest women I've ever seen.
alright this is not as impressive as the others but...
I have played many games against Stephon Marburys little cuz.
Isaiah Morton. he is on our high school rivels team.
He is 5'8 and drops about 30 on us every time.
Hes not going to grow so i dont think he will ever end up in the NBA
I played against Jason Williams from Duke in a pickup game almost 10 years ago right before his accident. He was definitely just messing around and didn't take the game seriously. The most impressive thing I remember is how jacked he was. Of course he had great quickness, hops, etc., but he was VERY strong.
Dante Calabria (who I believe was on the Lakers roster briefly) played in my YMCA local league last year. He's in his mid-30's now, but he still basically scores at will and was surprisingly quick when he wanted to be.
I've played against Sam Young and DeJuan Blair. Sam Youngs a real big dude and I was real surprised about how nice his shot is. I knew he could throw it down with some style and power but he was strokin that J. Blair is just an absolute animal inside. He goes for a board harder than just about anyone I've seen in a while. Amazing given he is missing both ACLS.
