I know it is early, but Ty Lawson through is first 3 games has 10 assits and only 2 turnovers. Karl is really big on him too, and I think he will be Billups main backup this season. He looks to be very NBA ready and I've seen Denver play a two of those 3 games and I've been very impressed so far. Thoughts on Lawson?
I didn't think Lawson would have this type of impact in the NBA. He's very NBA ready and a steal for Denver in this draft. They did a good job at getting a back up point in Lawson. He'll be a very solid back up for Billups and I like the way Dever has been playing with their rotation. Moving Billups to the 2 while Lawson comes in and pushes the ball, leaves Billups outside shooting lights out.
I'm one of those guys who said before the draft that Ty Lawson was one of the best point guards available. I certainly thought he was much better than Johnny Flynn who went at number 6 to Minnesota. Lawson was probably the fastest guard in the country and you can't coach speed. He also played for a school where the PG was required to exercise lots of discipline.
Therefore, I'm not the least bit surprised by his early success and I believe Lawson once again proves how little some NBA GMs know. And let me also throw in the fact that George Karl is known for rarely giving rookies any playing time, so his early success is apparently for real.
rtbt, I was watching his debut when he dropped 17, i think, and I was really impressed. I knew he'd make some impact this season, but I didnt think this early. North Carolina was a fantastic college team last year, and I knew to run the point there the transition wouldn't be as great as some other college teams, not to mention he is a solid 195 and wouldn't get out muscled by bigger point guards. He really finished well and showed excellent body control around the rim as well.
When JR Smith gets back, i'm just asking and not suggesting, do you think there will be times where we might see a small ball group of lawson billups smith and melo all on the floor together?
Lawson's assist/turnover ratio was absurd last at carolina, he very rarely turned the ball over which is no small order considering the pace that the tar heels play. probably doesnt hurt lawson that he was thankfully a caroina guy either and george probably has more faith in him for that reason alone
im actually suprised..i knew he would be a pretty good pg and told people he was better then they gave him credit for but i didnt think he woul dbe doing this well...another dc/maryland area product does well(so far)
As mentioned earlier, I would like to remind everyone that Ty Lawson is playing for George Karl, a coach who is known for leaving rookies on the bench. Joe, the fact that Karl gives Lawson significant playing time, confirms our evaluation of Lawson's potential as you described above.
Once again, and I said this before the draft, I thought Lawson was better than Johnny Flynn, who went in the number six slot.
i think it is obvious Lawson should be ahead of Anthony Carter soon if not right now. He looks very good.
I think Flynn was chosen earlier because of potential and he may very well prove his worth. Lawson would have gone higher but the thing is there was so many point guards in this draft. I Thought Philly should have taken either Lawson or Teague. Teague is playing well too but Lawson is a more experience point guard though. Lawson may be the future point for Denver when Billups gets too old.
yeah..one thing i think flynn needs to get better at is setting up his teammates more
I can agree that Flynn needs to improve his ability to set up teammates, I also think that's something Lawson needs to improve. He's looked extremely explosive though so far, able to get whereever he wants with his speed. He needs range on his shot though and for as good as Lawson looked at running the point at the highest level of college basketball, he's not a great playmaker right now to be honest in the NBA. He's actually seen alot of time off the ball when I've watched...but yea, he's playing relatively good, which is what I've expected. He is a change-of-pace guy though, he shouldn't be a starter anytime soon. He's a little too big a liability on D at this level.
yeah lawson also needs to work on that..i think as a starter he would be getting at leats 2 more assists though
Lawson Looking Very Nice, But Man I Think I Can Already Say From End To End He Is One Of The Fastest In The League For Sure, Dude Has Major Jets.
Smart pick by the Nuggets, like when he's running the point he pushes the ball can get the bigs easy points in transition. Billups brings the ball up lil slow lets the defense settle you have shooters with Meloo and Smith. Lawson definately was NBA ready, I think the Sixers passed becaz they like Jrue's ceiling & his defense. Not sure why Detroit passed on him for another SF since they have Prince.
det probably passed on him because they have stucky and bynum...i cant blame them for that because both of those guys are pretty good
