Rudy Gay, Grizzlies Fail to Reach Agreement: Rudy Gay Becomes RFA in 2010
I would take it offensively if I was Rudy, kind of disrespectful. hes apart of there future, and one of there best players....he deserves a nice pay raise, imo
Griz seem non-committed to him, wouldnt be surprised if he legitimately considers leaving in 2010
I think he be better off on another team where he can be more involve in the offense because memphis got to many shooters and its hurting the growth of rudy.rudy has so much potential but he can show it with all them gunslingers his best year scoring was his second year he average 20.1 he wnet from that to 18.9 and i think his production can go down further than that and not to mention iverson aint played yet so that mean less touches.
Where will he go seriously? There are not that many options for the money he is asking. I doubt he makes more than 9 million and that is if he is lucky that New Jersey or New York panic when Lebron is not available.
Roy 5 yrs $80 million. Aldridge 5 yrs $65/70 million. Rondo 5 yrs $55 million. Bargnani 5 yrs $50 million.
In my opinion Gay is worth in between $40-50 million when you consider what the players above got paid.
If I was NJ, i wouldnt mind overpaying RGay a bit...
Harris
Lee/Williams
Gay
Whoever
Lopez
sounds like a good lineup to me....he could be really helpful to that young NJ squad
Talent wise, he's worth just as much as Aldridge, Bargnani and Rondo, but you also have to look at the team's situation too. The Grizzlies haven't won anything with Gay and don't look like they're going to win anything anytime soon. I wouldn't committ $60+ million to him either right now.
- Aldridge on the other hand is leading a Portland team, along with Roy, to the playoffs and on the verge of becoming contenders. Personally, I thought they overpaid him, but he's their future power forward for 100% certain.
- Rondo on the other hand has a championship ring and he's performed in the playoffs on the biggest stage. He was worth every penny.
- Bargnani got $50 million and that surprised me, but they think he's their future and a huge piece of what they want to do.
If Gay performs like he's worth $60+ million and leads the team to more victories this season, then I'm sure they'll pay him. I really don't see any team offering him that much next summer.
I think Tezo is pretty much point on with this whole topic. Why would you pay Gay like he's a max player? The whole time he has been in Memphis he has looked like a very good Role player. His offensive game is nice too, but I'd like to see something on defense. Gay should be paid $8 million a year. By the same token Aldridge should probably be getting the same. Bargnani should probably be getting $7-$8 million and Rondo should be making about $9 million a year. Out of the players mentioned, Brandon Roy is the only max player. The problem is when you start comparing young guys with promising careers to guys that get paid more but are not as good. For example Jason Kidd is pulling down about $8million or so and Andre Miller $7 million. If that's the case, then Rondo is definitely worth $11 million a year. There seem to be a lot of guys in the NBA that either make too little or make too much. Hardly anyone seems to be getting paid what they are worth.
NJ seem pretty happy with the Twill/CDR/CLEE 2-3 rotation...They'll go after a pf if they take anyone this summer...But I could see the NYKs panicking when LBJ/dwade resign with their current teams, and overpaying someone like gay so it looks like they didn't punt 2 years for nothing.
If the Nets can sign Gay, then they could be a team to really look out for in 2010-2011. This is what their lineup might look like:
PG: Harris
SG: Lee, CDR
SF: Gay, Williams
PF: Derrick Favors/ Ed Davis/ Greg Monroe
C: Lopez
That team looks pretty good.
This might be a great move by the Grizzlies..Most players have their best seasons during a contract year..Then it might be a bad move...I expect Gay to be 3 of the most sought after free agents...He's restricted so They can match any offer..And they have the money to do it..I'd hate to see him leave Memphis..I really love how they've played the 1st 4 games..But their defense HAS to improve....
Per ESPN, Rudy Gay turned down a 5 year $50 million dollar deal. What planet is he living on? Who in the world could turn down that kind of guaranteed money, especially in this economy? It's not as if he's one of the elite players in the league, Gay is an above average guy on one of the worst teams in the NBA.
If you can't live on 50 million dollars, spread out over 5 years, something is seriously wrong. Anyone in that position should take the money and run!
In addition to what I said above about Gay, I think Tezo83 had the best analysis of any of the prior posts on this subject.
