thought i should start up a thread for all us raptor fans. this is for people to say who they think is doing good or bad, what should be done, and anything else that has to do with the raptors.
After the first game, i think every player played well.
Bargnani showed vast improvement in all of his game.
Bosh looked stronger, but his is still sticking with his new jump shot, he should stay in the low post more.
Hedo isnt looking like an all star, he is just a very good glue player that does a lil of everything.
DeRozan showed energy on defense and that he can get to the rim on offense, he needs to be a cutter on a team full of shooters, will get many easy baskets
Calderon wasnt great but he showed his steady play with a good assist to turnover ratio, his shot was off, but we all no it will get better.
Jack was a pest on defense and switched up the style of play when he went to the point, he pushed the ball and got his team mates easy baskets. with him and calderon on together its a great two headed monster and they dont lose much defensively
Bellinelli impressed me a lot, i thought he was just a spot up shooter with no D. He is a great shooter, but he also drives and/or dishes. And on D he stayed in front of his man pretty well i thought.
Antoine Wright, i didnt no much about him, but he is a defensive stopper, i love it! he will get a lot of PT on a team focussed on offense.
Johnson didnt get much burn but he showed a lot of energy under the basket, but nothing spectacular.
Rasho is Rasho, he plays tough smart D and does his job on offense, never has been flashy but he gets easy baskets by playing smart, like his follow up lay in
Evans was still hurt but i cannot wait to see him play, this team needs a lil more toughness
Also, i like how Triano has these guys playing defense for once, i saw guys rotating and closing in and blocking shots!
tell me what you think about the raptors this year, hopefully we can get this topic going all year long..
M. Bellinelli scored 25 points when Italy played the U.S. Olympic team which indicated he apparently had lots of potential. He was drafted by GS where D. Nelson had him glued to the bench for most of his two years on the team.
After his 2 year bench warming stint in GS, I was wondering if Bellinelli, who is only 23 years old, was a flop or if he was one of those guys who happened to be on the wrong team at the wrong time. I personally never had an opportunity to watch him play so I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who is familiar with his game.
I LOVED what I saw in the first game.
Bargnani has hands down been the hardest working player in the off season and pre-season. His performance was outstanding especially while playing against the big front court of the Cavs.
Bosh showed his new mentality to be a bigger player in the paint. 16 boards does show that he has improved his strength and now is focused to win...
DeRozan was great... he had no rookie jitters, was very focused and played great team basketball.
Calderon played just as Coach Triano wanted him to. Assists are his best attribute, the scoring can come easily but if he isnt distributing the ball the offense would not work. Great game for him
Jack was amazing... regardless of numbers he was the life of the 2nd unit, and with Jose and him on the court they played some great basketball... They are going to be one of the best starting and back up PG's in the league this year.
Belinelli was a great pick up for the Raptors this year.. he brings bench scoring and a solid shooter... will be a huge part of the team's success this year
Rasho was his usual reliable self, not much more needs to be said about his performance... Guaranteed!
Wright was unknown to many entering the season opener. But he has shown the Toronto fan base what he brings to this team. His defensive play is among the best in the league for his position. Will help the team face players like Kobe when DeRozan has rookie troubles
With Sonny Weems and Reggie Evans still out... the Raptors will benefit tremendously from their returns, with both being key parts to the new look Raptors.
Finally, i just want to state that with the terrible season last year due to coaching changes and injury, that all is in the past in the eyes of the Raptors Franchise. This year represents a rebirth of the team. With Jay Triano having a full training camp to instill his defensive mentality into his new team with the help of his outstanding coaching staff.
This year the Raptors will surprise many teams with their defense. The Cavs were a perfect example, they came in not knowing what the Raps brought to the defensive end of the game, and the results were what they were!
This is also against a team that is supposed to be good the Cleveland Cavaliers.
i dont think we will be seeing sonny weems any time soon, he didnt make the roster and they arent gonna give him a spot over someone else.. the only way he will play is due to injury to a wing player.. and on that note, who do you think is gonna be off the roster when evans comes back.. O'Bryant?
that was a &$#%#&@! game.. they need more toughness down low and more athletic wings for defense cause gasol, randolph, gay, mayo, and conley killed them with strength and athleticism... And i havent watched randolph play before but everyone said he was no good and just a ball hog, but man is this guy good. he scored at will, rebounded hard, and defended bosh fairly good. I also thought that randolph and bosh have very similar games. they both can spot up for a three, but mostly work from the elbows where they can put up the j or drive to the hoop, and the can both post up and score down low..
Bargnani had a rough start and just didnt seem like he had his head in it, he droppen several passes and wasnt all there on defense. In the third quarter he kina went off and scored 12 or so quick points, but other than that he wasnt there.
Bosh was frikken amazing, this is how i like to see him play. He starts by scoring and pounding down low and then every once in a while hitting the lil jump shot, he loses his game when he sticks with the jump shot but when he works from the post up he ends up doing a lot better.
Hedo looks like he is almost scared to play. He is still a smart player and such but i wanna see more desire and more will to earn that big paycheck he is getting.. maybe he is just getting a feel for the game.
DeRozan was using his athleticism with some nice drives and a couple put backs. He also played hard defense on some very good offensive players, and getting one nice block on OJ.
Calderon isnt himself. his jumpshot is no longer automatic and he had some poor decisions in the game(very unlike him). i think he is trying to push the ball and that just isnt him, he needs to stay more under control.
Jack played some hard defense and unlike calderon, jack can push the ball and he does so very good, i would like to see jack get more playing time at the point to see what he can do.
Bellinelli is showing some very positive things. offensively he is very effective driving and shooting. he is also showing some consistency on defense, his minutes should go up a bit.
Wright again showed that he is a lock down defender, but thats all he should be. Needs to stop shooting and especially driving(it was ugly). But he will get consistent minutes being a defensive minded player on an offensive minded team.
Johnson did not get much PT at all and was very unnoticeable
Rasho played very good and smart offense and defense. played strong against gasol and was relentless on the offensive boards racking up atleast 4 and scoring 8 points, but should have been 12, he missed two very easy shots.
now that we have seen the raps come back down to earth they should be working harder and becoming more of a team.
There isn't much more I could add to dmo21's outstanding analysis other than to say people shouldn't draw too many conclusions from one game. The fact that Toronto beat Cleveland was nice, but one shouldn't project a successful season off of that lone victory.
you cant determine how a player will do in the nba by what they do in the olympics against the U.S.A.....to this day i dont know why people on here hate on zach..they call him a black hole but he played on bad teams and still shot as much as the other nba pf who were on good teams so wouldnt that make them black hole since they have more options yet shoot around the same amount of times as zach..hes a career 47percent shooter so he couldnt have been taking that many bad shots and if he was that mean he was making damn near half of them..anyway im getting off point..zach has always been a very very good scorer and rebounder no matter what some fans may say..most who hate on him are the ones who hear someone else say hes not good or a blackhole..ive watched him every since he impressed me by punishing that tall white guy in the mcdonalds game(he was about 7'5) neil fingelton or something like that..he went to unc, with his polished pot moves even though he wasnt that athletic..yeah he took some bad shoots on the other teams but isnt that what youre star player does when the team is bad?..most of the play were run for him and he took the shots like he was suppossed to
ya, this was the first time i seen him play and i was expecting the worse from what i heard. But he played very well, and he didnt take many, or if any bad shots. I really like him as a player and would say it was a good pick up by the grizz. Do you think him and bosh can be compared?
no because bosh is pretty athletic with a more extended game..zach is pf with aloooooooot of post moves..i mean he really has about as many post moves as kevin garnett..thats how he scores because if you stop one move he has a counter and then a counter for that and another counter for that..think about how many other pf are career 20 and 10 type players( minus his first 2 years in the leauge he i a 20 and 10 player)..a good comparision would be along the lines of carlos boozer..hes not as good as a healthy boozer and slightly less athletic
ya.. that sounds better, bosh looked longer and more athletic while randolph kinda looked short and pudgy haha, but he did work off the dribble a bit, but not as much as bosh and they both actually hit threes today.
I love the make-up of this team and they should be good coming into this season on paper... They got loads of shooters and talented wing players plus Chris Bosh... Still, I don't think they're a championship team but hey, with Bargnani finally blossoming, things are looking great for the city of Toronto whose fans are very passionate and supportive of the Raptors...
so today the raptors play the magic.... this game might be alright, but:
-Dwight Howard will destroy, all the raptor big man have been getting pushed around in the rebounding department and who better to do that than the huge D12, but on offense i think bargnani and nesterovic can contain him because they can stay in front of him, they will just get pushed around and hopefully bosh and bargnani can make him get in foul trouble on the offensive end with their athletic play.
-Vince Carter usually goes off against the raptors, so hopefully he will have to sit this game with his ankle..
-I think the raptors wings can handle Orlando's wings because rashard wont have matchup problems with Hedo.
-In the past, Orlando's point guards have killed the raptors, and now they magic have 2 good point guards.. Probably see a lot of Jarrret Jack today to stop their point guards
In the end i think Orlando will be to crisp, strong, and deep and Orlando will win by quite a bit.
I agree that he is very overrated.
Im a raptors fan saying this..
Jack needs more PT, or even Belinelli can play a bit of PG too.
Jose Calderon is one of the top ten PGs in the NBA. He has few very turnovers, he shoots a high percentage, he can score when they need him, and his foul shooting is almost flawless.
I realize player evaluations are very subjective, but almost every team in the league would love to have Calderon. I wish he were playing in NY with the Knicks.
Calderon is a good player but he's more of a caretaker than a player that will make great plays for others. He rarely takes risks, and that's why his assist/turnover ratio is as good as it is. But that's no easy as it sounds, and you have to like that he's developed a good jumper after being "broke" when he 1st got to the NBA. He's a very good player to me, but not an All-Star.
I think iguodala9's assessment of Calderon was right on on the money. I would agree that he's a top flight point guard but not an All Star. However, the gap between where he is and reaching the level of an All Star is very small. I think avoiding turnovers is one of the primary responsibilities of a PG and that facet of the game is often underrated and that's one of his major strengths.
Once again, almost every team in the league would love to have Calderon, especially the Knicks.
jose is good at running a team, mostly a half court team not a running team. he is very careful with the ball and a good distrubot. but his biggest flaw is his defense, he was never a good defender and i think his hamstring made him worse because he can no longer stay in front of the young fast point guards in the league.
yes, he is a very bad defender,
and your right about the injury that probably made it worse.
guys anyone watching raptors-magic game, i can't watch it on justin because of maximum members in my country or something like this, anyone has some other links?
this game had a rough start with the raps being behind by more than 20 in the first half. Orlando had 3's dropping everywhere, probably around 50 points from behind the arc, just ridiculus.Toronto seems to have a lack of offensive scheme, its just a lot of one on ones. In the second half tho the raptors battled back, showing great composure and will to want to win and compete.
Bargnani- in the first half he was invisible, but he did not play bad, he just didnt get the ball at all. In the second half he got the ball and was extremely impressive hitting threes and driving to the hoop easily. They need to get him started earlier, like run the first 5 plays of the game through him, because they need him to win.
Bosh- rebounded hard against D12, but he couldnt do any work in the post, but his jump shot was working and he actually hit a couple of 3's which will really help out his game.
Turkoglu- he finally looked like he wanted to play. In the third quarter he decided he wanted to be himself and he was scoring and creating. And then he dissapears too. He needs to be the one with the ball in his hands in the fourth quarter because bosh cannot create for others, just himself.
DeRozan- did a lil bit of everything on offense tho, but not getting much playing time to do much at all. I still think he needs to be cutting and getting easy buckets from people driving instead of spotting up for shots.
Calderon- played decently defensively, nobody could stop jameer, but on offense he was getting to the hoop easily. His shot is still sketchy and he is the only guy on the court showing passion. For example when Calderon got the foul for getting thrown out of the way by Howard, he kinda got upset and took it to them, you need passion like that.
Jack- had a rough day. Was having trouble defending Jameer and Reddick. Reddick was actually driving past him, that is unacceptable. Jack also had a couple careless turnovers that he could have avoided.
Belinelli- didnt do anything. Was on the bench most of the game because the Raps needed defense, and not his offense this game.
Wright- this guy amazes me. He came in to vamp up the defense, which he did, and then he was showing that energy on the offense too. He was pushing the ball, hitting shots, driving to the net, and creating for others. This man is gonna get a lot of PT this year.
Johnson- also came in with Wright to add energy, and he did with his defense and all round hustle. He has some bad hands tho, couple dropped passes and several dropped rebounds.
Nesterovic- played great D against Howard, and was his smart self being in the right place at the right time to get easy baskets. When Toronto is getting beat down low they need this guy in there.
