it's early

it's a little too early to tell now, but should the grizzlies go for rondo in free agency if conely doesn't show much improvement this year?

now now, i do like conely. I've had mix feelings about his play since he came into the league. the second half of last year, he showed some improvement. I hate to put conely down like this, but rondo is that much better and still has a lot of room for potential.

this coming draft night....200 somethin days from now, I think the grizz should try to trade randolph's contract. by draft night, this season will have ended obviously, meaning randolph will have 1 year left to his contract, which the grizz might be able to trade away easier. next, the grizz should draft the best PF (available) in the draft. when the free agency signings startup, the grizz should attempt for rondo and keep gay.

why would rondo fit on the grizz?
*rondo's a fast kid. the grizz have said it themselves that they like to run.
*he's a good distributor that can make plays happen
*the kid can get to the hoop and finish better than conely.
*the grizz already have outside shooters in mayo/gay, it compliments well.
*he could help the development of marc the same way rose helped noah in chicago.
*I also think rondo plays better defense that conely.

most of all, the grizz need to find a way to create assists. they were one of the worst teams last year in overall assits. i believe bringing in rondo would help mayo and gay get better shots. i believe marc could improve a lot better with rondo running the point, rather than conely. rondo was almost a motherf*ckin tripple double average machine in the playoffs last year....

Gasol
( whoever "we" draft for the 2010 draft )
Gay
mayo
rondo

grizzlies starting lineup in 2011, sound good?

I don't know.  I just don't

I don't know.  I just don't think replacing Conley with Rondo is going to be a huge difference maker.  Rondo & Conely have a lot of similarities.  Sure Rondo would be an upgrade but not enough to make this team a title contender. That is the goal right to win a Championship? I imagine after this season Iverson is gone. I agree I think Memphis should trade Randolph too.

Overall it really comes down to how much the young nucleus improves this year.  Mayo, Gay, & Gasol have to make big strides.  If all three improve somehow & the Girzz are able to resign Gay then things will get better.  The 2010 draft is going to be a savior for a lot of teams & Memphis should be one of them.  Just stay patient.  If everybody improves significantly & it seems that the only real missing piece is an upgrade at point then by all means sign Rondo.  But yeah I just don't think he is the difference maker unless Mayo, Gay, & Gasol all take their game to the next level.

rondo

i agree rondo is an upgrade, and ya he wouldn't make the grizz title contenders. the grizz are going through development stages. I personally think that the mayo/gay/gasol, in some way, will each improve their games. I'm not gonna say they'll play like allstars, but they improve their game in areas they've been struggling in.

Rondo running the point will have a similar effect like the way rose helped everybody else's game. If anything, he'll help mayo and gay have easier shots. But i think he'll help the bigs much more than those 2.

if everything goes to plan this year, basically, conely/mayo/gay/gasol can mesh together and look much better than last year, then i say forget about rondo.

rondo

i think the grizzlies should worry about resigning gay before thinking about rondo. Rondo would improve the grizzlies chances of making the playoffs. But not enough to be a contender.

seriously?

obviously a hypothetical situation, but u think the celtics wud just let rondo walk out the door like that, at the very least they wud trade him or give in a give him an extension, no way the celtics let him walk scott free into FA, thats just stupid. if the grizzlies really want him they'll prolly makes some dumb ass trade like oj mayo, thabeet and a 1st rounder for rondo, sound good chris wallace?

check it out...

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yztz4ty

Before you completely balk at my idea of this trade--think about it. If the Celtics for some reason underachieve this season (age... injuries... long season... whatever reason) they may want to mix it up again to reach the playoffs. They may need to get some more youth on the floor and giving up (troublesome?) Rondo and (aging) Allen may be the way to do so. The only way the Celts would give those two up is if they completely botch the season before the trade deadline.

Celts recieve:

a serviceable PG in Conley
an all-star athlete in Rudy Gay
a decent emerging bigman in Marc Gasol
and Marko Jaric's horrible contract--and Marko Jaric...

Grizz recieve:

a potential all-star Point Guard in Rondo
huge tax relief with Ray Allen's contract
and tons of hate-mail from Grizzly fans...

The only way the Grizz would do this trade is if Gay became so unhappy that the Grizz have still not re-signed him (we all know the Grizz only would want him on the cheap). Gay would probably be upset too with lack of touches he will have throughout the first half of the season and may feel he wants to leave after this year anyway (he's a R-FA after this season).

Conley is a throw in. The Grizz would gladly upgrade from Conley to Rondo. It would be like a Rondo-audition for half a season to see if he is worth the all-star money that they wouldn't give Gay.

Ray Allen's contract is a bonus for the Grizz too. It allows the Grizz to be under the tax next season especially since they would dump Marko Jaric's horrendous contract onto the Celts. Ray Allen would most likely be waived so he can swim back to the celts or another contender in this case--Im not sure who did this first in the NBA but it seems like it's done all the time now.

As for Marc Gasol-- the Grizz ultimately want to play Thabeet at the center position full time--otherwise they would not have drafted him with the second pick. Even if Thabeet struggles the Grizz might see value in moving Gasol so Thabeet has time to develop. It's commonly done in the NBA.

Celts lineup:

Mike Conley, Eddie House
Rudy Gay, Tony Allen, Marko Jaric
Paul Pierce, Marquise Daniels
Kevin Garnett, Glen Davis
Kendrick Perkins, Marc Gasol, Rasheed Wallace

Grizz Lineup:

Rajon Rondo, Marcus Williams
OJ Mayo, Allen Iverson
Sam Young, Darrell Arthur
Zach Randolph, DeMarre Carroll
Hasheem Thabeet, Steven Hunter, Hamed Haddadi

ok now here comes all the criticism... lets hear it fellas...

let me add...

chances are neither the Celts or Grizz are willing to pay Rondo or Gay max money. Both teams seem lukewarm on each of them but they may think the grass is greener on the other side. If both teams think they will lose these players unless they pay them max contracts then they may just decide to trade them.

with the fact that both are restricted FAs each team may just play it safe and try to keep Rondo and Gay for their market value (most likely far less than max money). Chances are Rondo and Gay would just bolt after 2010-2011 anyway but it would be safer to keep these players than trade them--obviously. So yea i know this trade is far fetched.. but if things just dont work out with Rondo with the Celts and Gay with the Grizz it seems possible regardless.

If i were the GM of the Grizz I wouldn't do it. But I am not and the Grizz (along with the Clippers) are beyond cheap. Teams like this would trade Micheal Jordan in his prime to save some money if they needed to.

sup truth

i think he'd be an upgrade at the pg position.
it would take a lot of time before he would severely put the grizz in talks of titles.

it would be nice though, rondo's penetration in the paint could give mayo and gay some open looks. and it'd make it easier on the bigs.

note* to some of the first posters, i know boston wouldn't give rondo up without a fight. I also understand rondo wouldn't severely help the grizzlies put together a championship team.

The grizzlies right now are in rebuilding mode. They're gel-ing everybody together and getting them experience with decent minutes.

I'm assuming one day that heisely might do something smart for the franchise BY SPENDING money for some very valuable future players.....instead of money moves like....iverson...and randolph..
