Would you say he's a bust? Why or why not?
Michael Olowokandi, Kwame Brown and Darko Milicic are busts. Kenyon Martin isn't a great #1 pick, but he's no bust. He's had a decent career. Of course injuries have really limited him also. Broken leg, microfracture on both knees...
He was also a starter and major contributer on those Nets teams that went to the NBA Finals.
Kenyon Martin was the #1 pick in a horrible draft so I think he gets some more credit than de deserves.
Kenyon Martin career averages 14.1 ppg (high 16.7) rebs 7.1 ( high 9.5 (min 60 games) blocks 1.2 (high 1.7)
Pervis Ellison career averages 9.5 ppg (high 20.0 ) rebs 6.7 (high 11.2 (min 60 games) blocks 1.6 (high 2.7)
Pervis Ellison is by many considered one of the biggest busts in the last 25 years and his numbers aren't that much worse than Martin's. Martin made 1 all-star game and Ellison won a MIP award. From a numbers standpoint they don't look to different, Martin has had a bigger impact than Ellison, but for a #1 pick I still think Martin is a Bust
No. I wouldnt call him a bust, he's an underachiever though probably. He's had a slightly below-average career relative to his draft position though. He wasnt expected to single-handedly turn around the Nets when they picked him, and he didnt, but he has been kinda successful in the NBA. He's been an All-Star, he was an immediate contributor in the NBA as soon as he was picked, and everything. Now, it can be argued that he's been a bust for his production and salary for the Nuggets. But he's been through tough injuries..I say no.
NO..HE'S NOT A BUST..HE'S HAD A GOOD CAREER SO FAR..But he's not a francise type player..thats whut you're looking for in the TOP overall pick...BUT in CERTAIN years some drafts lack Major Talent....then it can be stocked with great players like IN 1996,1984,2003 & 2008 THOSE DRAFTS PRODUCED several francise players...
I think Kenyon Martin is sort of in the same group as Joe Smith. They haven't quite lived up to #1 pick expectations, but they haven't been busts either.
i wouldnt say hes a bust considering the draft he was in..i dont think his injuries have slowed him because even without them he wasnt a franchise changer. hes a good starter that wit the right pg's can make a all start team or 2
We have to be careful with that "bust" label. Not every number one pick is a Shaq, Duncan, Iverson or LeBron. There are going to be your Pervis Ellisons, Derrick Colemans, Joe Smiths, Kenyon Martins, etc. I don't think they're busts. They just don't have the same impact as those GREAT #1 picks.
Yeah, I'll give you that Tezo. I just think some players are scrutinized more harshly than others, possibly because of hype and what not, but I think Martin has really avoided the bust label for being just good enough to stay in the league and be a solid player, and for being in a very weak draft. Very similar to what someone said about Joe Smith, but if Greg Oden who was hyped and part of a good draft has numbers of 14.1 and 7.1 9 years into his career and struggles with injuries, I think he will be considered a bust, being drafted ahead of Durant in a good class. I think the bust label is really circumstantial. Martin may not be a sure fire bust, but I still think compared to the entirety of #1 picks he would have to be considered in the lower teir.
Martin is a good player, he just lacks height. He was always listed at about 6 feet 9. But the day he was drafted (go back and watch the tape) his listing was at 6 foot 7 and 1/4. He's a great defender (he once aspired to be DOY), but injuries and lack of size prevent him from guarding tall, bigger power forwards.
Dhamp...the greatest basketball mind in the world. Next to Hubie Brown anyway.
Without Kenyon martin's many blunders in the wcf...the nuggets could have possibly been in the finals. many forget the kobe foul while up 1, the missed layup from a billups pass, the techs at the worst time and the terrible inbound pass that ariza stole. Dont get me wrong, he is an ok player, but he is injury prone and has no real offensive skill, while trying to play intimidating defense and still getting fried (see dirk 1st round). I personally think Martin is not a bust because nobody expected him to be great, but he is an overated defender in my opinion and has to many critical miscues that go unnoticed.
Come on did you see that draft, no way he is a bust. He also played really good early on. Maybe if he was taken number one in some other drafts but in that draft who else would have been taken that high. Also Pervis was a bust for a number one pick but he was a solid player though and player for a long time and had one really spectacular year and other subpar ones.
