WNBA...I know!
I won tickets to a WNBA game once...fell asleep at the game
Times like now, when theres nothing happening in the NBA, and I havent seen a basketball game in months, i might try to catch some WNBA action, but its just not something I can get into...I dont know what it is, the WNBA just doesnt have that "wow" factor that makes you wanna match games
No doubt a lot of the women playing in the WNBA have a lot of skills as shooters, passers, and ball handlers, as well has high basketball IQ's, but in my opinion one of the most exciting parts of watching a NCAA Mens game or an NBA game is the pure athleticism paired with the size and skill of Men's players. In the WNBA you are never going to see a break-away dunk, or a layup swatted off the backboard. I was watching a WNBA game one time and in between free throws a player jumped up an slapped the backboard as if to show off. I know some women who can really play, but without the athleticism, there is no female equivalent to a Lebron dunking from the line, or Vince Carter jumping over a 7' person. Im all for the WNBA, but i think it probably peaked in popularity its first couple years in the league and is really only staying afloat financially because Stern and the NBA back it.
is because the lack or games on tv, you dont really see highlights, plus the lack of excited players also hurts them. im not saying that players in the wnba suck. but they dont really excite you. if their was more crossing over, dunking(i know some of them girls can dunk) maybe add a few more candance parkers,
I'm kind of disappointed by the response to this post... I have always thought that discussing the WNBA with other guys is a great litmus test as to how much people really understand basketball. Although I love the NBA and NCAA hoops, first and foremost, I love the GAME OF BASKETBALL period, and I support anyone who plays it... I think everyone who talks down the WNBA should really grow up. I realize that a lot of you are young, but that doesn't mean you should run your mouth the way some of you did. If you don't like women's hoops, that's cool (it's not my favorite either), but don't diss it, especially for sexist reasons... tools like mikenike should probably not post anything on this site... basketball isn't about how good looking someone is... it's about how well you play... sounds like he'd be happier if Brad Pitt or Tyson Beckford were playing in the NBA... I also have a problem, because much of the "scouting" that some of you guys think you do is bunk... I think we all agree that you should actually watch players in games (a lot) before you discuss them... if you admit to not watching WNBA, then don't comment about it! The same is true of all the prospects we discuss here... I'm sick of the people who watch Paul George throw down a sick dunk and think you know how to evaluate him... there's much more than highlight reels on YouTube and vertical measurements to break down players... next time try and watch a WNBA game... don't compare it anything just watch it, and enjoy it, and then tell me what you think... check out Taurasi... kind of has a Pistol Pete type game (big time shooter/scorer, who has a ton of flash to her passing and ball handling)... she's fun to watch, and can really ball... one more thought... the WNBA is what, like 10-11 years old? Do you know what the NBA looked like at the same age? You could argue the women are way ahead of the men at the same stage... the NBA was just entering it's first real wave of talent, had a only a handful of great players, and people weren't dunking, and flying through the air or anything like that... the WNBA players are, as a group probably quite a bit better... I think the women's game will catch up sooner than many of you realize, and that doesn't mean you have to like it, but if you love hoops, it'd be a good look to stop hating.
Remember when the WNBA first came out they put lots of games on TV, replaced the Dunk Contest with "2 Ball" in the all-star game, Ran tons of commercials ( My favorite being a young man being taunted on the basketball court as someone yelled "you play like a girl" and his reply was a subtle "thanks") Stern pulled out all the stops and I think for the reasons I stated earlier it just didn't catch on. Not because they didn't try to market it.
listening to espn radio one time and they were comparing sport leagues to movies and the wnba was compared to a chick flick, which is kind of true. i mean the wnba lacks the excitement like the nba. as joe wolf said, the players fail in comparison to the nba. what makes the nba so great is that it keeps you on your feet with highlight dunks and rejections that end up in the stands. im not degrading the skills of females because the wnba has players with better shots than most males. however, all that shooting and layups just makes the game seem so soft.

Whoa I stated a FACT, and I love WNBA but that doesn't mean they don't suck, i bet i know more about WNBA ball then 95% of the guys on here, watcha think ive been doing these past few night's? watching the Pheonix Mercury dominate on NBATV
as I stated the only good players in the WNBA are Diana Taurasi, Lauren Jackson, Becky Hammon, T-Catchings, and maybe one or 2 others

Dp you think the WNBA will ever be popular? Like, has anyone seen a game here, what do you think they need to change?
