Fizer's Take: Los Angeles Lakers

At last! At last! At last! Kobe Bryant has silenced every critic for saying he can't lead the Lakers on a championship all by himself... They just recently and finally won the championship that Kobe can call his own. It was a dream season for them... Kobe Bryant's maturity and transformation from a ballhog to an unselfish leader has made the Lakers even more formidable than ever. Despite of injuries and sort-of choppy chemistry, the core remained intact as the team won 65 games, pretty impressive, right? They had some tough games in the playoffs including that 7-game series where they had a tough battle against the Houston Rockets prompting Charles Barkley to comment whether the Lakers have the heart to win it all... But in the end of the season, they were raising the Larry 'Brien trophy and nobody can ever dispute that. I was happy especially for Pau Gasol who I think truly deserves a taste of an NBA title... The Lakers faced the Magic in the finals but it was hardly competitive as they dominated Dwight Howard and the crew... The sweet title number 10 for Phil Jackson and the team's quest to finally hit the promised land after 7 years of disappointment has been a great achievement, especially when they are 2 titles away from tying their archrival Celtics for most title at 17... The Lakers currently has 15... This upcoming season looks to be more dominating than the first though it won't be easy now since the targets are on their back...

The 2009 NBA Draft was a boring one for the Lakers... They settled for one pick in the second round and sold their two earlier picks (the 28th and 42nd)... It was understandable though since they are looking to resign Lamar Odom to a contract extension and they do need the money. The Lakers both traded their draft picks of Toney Douglas and Patrick Beverley to different teams and settled for their second to last pick at 59 which was Chinemelu Elonu... He is a raw talent coming from the Aggies program but many say he entered the draft a little bit too early, much like a reminisce on DeAndre Jordan who fell in the 2nd round last 2008... He has a raw talent and a good size at Center-Forward... Nevertheless, it won't hurt that much if the Lakers add youth on their roster...

The offseason moves made by the Lakers is what I would say, the BEST of the bunch... First, they acquire defensive specialist Ron Artest who had almost created a rivalry with Kobe when they were facing each other in the Semi-Finals... Artest would provide additional insane toughness and intangibles to an already strong Laker team. Their biggest loss would probably be Trevor Ariza whose athleticism and long arms will be missed as he tries to get a chance with the Houston Rockets. The resigning of Lamar Odom was huge despite the dramas and how close he was to draw his attention to the Miami Heat... But still, they reacquire his services as they embark another journey to defend their championship. MJ once said, "It's like the King of the Hill Situation, once you're on top, you don't want to come down..." On paper, the Lakers are the favorites to win it all again... But with so many teams revamping their rosters and added key players, it could be a journey that is even more challenging than the first... Still, with guys like Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol, Ron Artest, Lamar Odom, Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryant leading this team... There's no question who has a bigger chance to win it again...
