What are your thoughts on this

Just read a chat with senior NBA writer Luke Byrnes over on hoopswolrd, and he made a few interesting statements that I wanted to see how you guys felt.

1-Carmelo Anthony is a top 5 player in the NBA right now

2-Jordan Hill will be an all-star, and Memphis should have drafted him number 2 instead of Thabeet and trading for Randolph.

3-Boston will be the third best team in the east next year due primarily to age.

4-The Indiana Pacers, led by development of hibbert, Granger, Rush, Ford, Murphy as well as additions of Watson, Hansbrough, DJones, and the return of Dunleavy, will make the playoffs.

5-Rondo will put up about 16-8-8 and be an all-star next year.

6-Pau Gasol showed much more toughness and has passed both Amare and Bosh among pf's due to his complete game.

7-Orlando will keep Lewis at the pf spot and start Pietrus at the sf spot, instead of starting Bass at the pf and sliding Lewis down to sf.

What do you guys think about some or all of these opinions?

Ehhh

6 and 7 make sense to me.

Melo could be considered a top 5 player to some. There is Kobe, LeBron and Wade, after that it is pretty objective. CP3, D-Will, B-Roy, Melo, Dwight Howard, Yao, Dirk, KG, and so on... To me, Melo is a bubble top 10 player.

I do not see Jordan Hill ever being an all-star. To tell you the truth, Hill doesn't impress me much at all. He will be better than Thabeet but neither one should ever be an all star.

Boston is the best team in the East to me. Age is a weak arguement. Remember these are superstars -- legends even -- we are talking about.

Indiana is my second favorite team. Have been for a while. But they are still trying to develop an identity. Until they do that, they will remain in NBA-Purgatory.

8 boards seems like a stretch. He didn't even manage that per 48 last season.

1.carmello anthony top 5? No, but maybe top 5 scorer
2.yes because gasol is a good center and thabeet has no potential at all to have any offensive moves and randolph is a cancer
3. no i see boston being the number one seed in the east because they have a good bench that can take time away from the older players to rest and of lewis getting suspended is going to hurt even if for a few games, so they will be magic 2 and cleveland 3
4.this year no maybe next year because they are on the outside looking in and boston is getting old so they could replace them but as a 7th seed or 8th seed
5.no way because rebounds are going to be hard to get while playing next to kg and perkins the great rebounders they are and he is only 6'1 which to get eight rebounds you have to be taller then that.
6.no because the reason why he looks good is because of all the threats around him they are worried about kobe and odom and now artest so he isnt being double teamed like in amare and bosh position before toronto summer spending spree they are number one options gasol could be number one option but not with kobe there
7.i think that it depends what you want more rebounders or better defense but i would go with lewis at the 4

My Thoughts

1-Carmelo is within the top 15. He's an amazing scorer and a good rebounder, but doesn't do much else.

2-Hill will never be an all star. If Memphis wanted a power forward so bad, they should have went after him though. Hill will be better than Thabeet, plus he would have fit with Gasol.

3-Boston will be the best team in the east, but might only have the 2nd or 3rd best record because they will focus on keeping guys healthy and getting them plenty of rest. They are built for the playoffs.

4-I think they could get the 8th spot, but everyone has to stay healthy. Any longterm injury to any guy they have means that they won't make it.

5-I'll go with 14-9-6. He should get more opportunities this year. He will sneak onto one of the final spots as the 3rd point guard as long as Allen Iverson doesn't end up in the East because the fans will vote him in.

6-Pau Gasol was already ahead of both of those guys in my opinion. He does everything that Bosh can do, but better and is better at everything else except for scoring when compared to Amare, but even then you have to keep in mind that Gasol is getting less chances to do that playing with Kobe and Amare is getting a lot more playing with Steve Nash in a system where he is constantly running and getting tons of looks.

7-Yes and no. I think Orlando will do a lot of their lineups based on the matchup that night. Nelson, Carter, Lewis and Howard will start every game, but Lewis will shift between sf and pf depending on what they are wanting to do. Meaning Peitrus and Bass will start some games.

I don't think Melo is top

I don't think Melo is top 5... but he did pick up his defense last year, esp in the playoffs, so I could see how you might make that argument since he is one of the best scorers in the game. I think Chauncey taught him a lot.

Jordan Hill may become an all-star as a by-product of playing with D'Antoni~ more possessions to score and get rebounds on...

Injuries, not age, would be the only reason Boston is #3... I can see them only being #2 in the regular season- to Cleveland- but I think they'd win a 7game series against any team in the east, if healthy.

depends if they play defense. their interior defense especially is pretty weak

16-8-8, hahaha no. don't think he'll score that many points, or get that many rebounds

yea, i mean, gasol proved to me that he can get it done on the defensive end when he was guarding dwight when bynum was out of the game. He's clearly above those other two offensively... he's got such a good touch.

it's hard for me to say right now... I think they will probably keep the floor open to start the game and have 4 3 pt shooters out there, and then with Peitrus out there, VC won't have to expend a whole bunch of energy guarding the opposition's best wing player... with Lewis at '3', he might have to.

1 - Melo improved a lot last

1 - Melo improved a lot last year, but I'm still not ready to say he's a top five player. Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Paul... Melo??? I don't know. He improved a lot last year, but I'm not sure he's top five yet. He's moving up the list, but I'd say he's in between 10-15.

2 - I agree with part of this. Memphis should've drafted him second over Thabeet. It's early, but I'm not a huge believer in Thabeet. He just doesn't display the heart and mentality that I think will make him successful. I think Hill would've been a better fit, not to mention cheaper than trading for Randolph. I disagree with him being an All-Star though lol.

3 - I disagree. It'll be close between Cleveland and Boston as to who the best team in the East is. The Celtics won't go any lower than second best. The improvement of Rondo, Perkins and Big Baby was major last season/during the playoffs. Then they added two starters in Wallace and Daniels to the team. I just think they're going to be REALLY good, especially on the defensive end. They're hungry and motivated too.

4 - I agree. My hometown squad will sneak into the playoffs this season. Hibbert and Rush have improved dramatically from last season, not to mention I'm expecting a BREAKOUT season from Ford. Our defense must improve though.

5 - I disagree lol. He'll play a major role with the Celtics, but I doubt he'll average that many points or rebounds.

6 - I agree. Gasol is better than both Bosh and Stoudemire. He has a more complete game than them.

7 - I don't disagree with this, but starting Peitrus would take away their spark off of the bench.

1-Carmelo Anthony is a top 5
1-Carmelo Anthony is a top 5 player in the NBA right now
I'm in strong disagreement with this one. How can you rank him above James, Wade, Bryant, Howard or Paul? Even if he is the sixth best player, I believe there is a clear first tier.

2-Jordan Hill will be an all-star, and Memphis should have drafted him number 2 instead of Thabeet and trading for Randolph.
I agree 100 percent.

3-Boston will be the third best team in the east next year due primarily to age.
I disagree. I think this could be a "last stand" type year for the Celtics.

4-The Indiana Pacers, led by development of Hibbert, Granger, Rush, Ford, Murphy as well as additions of Watson, Hansbrough, DJones, and the return of Dunleavy, will make the playoffs.
Ugh. No way. As far as I'm concerned, they have as little upside as any team in the league.

5-Rondo will put up about 16-8-8 and be an all-star next year.
Seems like a pretty safe guess, except the eight rebounds. Try 16-6-8, and I'll agree.

6-Pau Gasol showed much more toughness and has passed both Amare and Bosh among pf's due to his complete game.
Unquestionably true. Gasol is probably the third-best power forward behind Garnett and Nowitzki. I refuse to categorize Duncan as a power forward.

7-Orlando will keep Lewis at the pf spot and start Pietrus at the sf spot, instead of starting Bass at the pf and sliding Lewis down to sf.
I imagine this will happen, but I don't like it. Pietrus is horribly overrated, and that will be exposed as a starter.

Adi... do you think Melo >

Adi... do you think Melo > KG ? I don't... I'd take KG over almost anyone else besides the top 3 (wade LBJ kobe)...

and do u really agree that hill is an allstar? or just that they shouldve taken him over thabeet?

and as for pietrus... he did a TREMENDOUS job on LBJ in the conf finals. (he also did a not so good job on kobe) but the point is, he does a good job using his strength as an LBJ stopper, and he hits a decent clip behind the arc (36%), which is what the team needs on the floor around Dwight? agree? if he comes off the bench, a lot of his PT will come with Dwight out... and then that will devalue his 3pt shooting...

1-Agreeable...He stepped up

1-Agreeable...He stepped up last season and this year I see a better season

2-Yea, I think he can be a all star in the next 5 seasons because the East is Weak and he can put up 13-10-2

3- No, They are the Best Team in the East. And My fav to win the title

4-Maybe. If Hibbert can be solid and Ford can run PG well, Yes

5-No. Rondo will put up like 16-6-10.

6-NO! GASOL IS STILL SOFT IMO

7-I agree, Gives you more frontcourt depth off the bench

allen may be declining, but

allen may be declining, but his best asset is still shooting, so he'll continue to do that. i just don't see the shots being there for rondo's taking.... yea, he's improved every yr, but to 12 ppg. And now they just added another legit offensive weapon in Wallace?

Wallace is coming off the

Wallace is coming off the bench. Perkins will start. Allen needs the ball to score now so Rondo will set him up and can increase his assists numbers. Also, Rondo will play alot of PT until they get a legit backup PG.

I see him having a 16ppg, 6rpg, 10apg season.

If he has done work this

If he has done work this summer and really put time into his catch-and-shoot jumper than i think 16 ppg is reasonable, but until he shows a consistent outside shot, he'll be stuck in the lower double digits...

i think hill will be an all

i think hill will be an all star one day... yes he is very raw right now, but what you guys fail to realize is he didnt pick up a basketball until a couple of years ago and his learning curve has been unbelievable. Every year he has made great strides to jump onto the basketball map. He has the body and athleticism for it, so if he continues to grow and work hard, i see a lot of great things in his future. However on the other hand thabeet is going to be up there with darko as one of the biggest wastes of a number 2 pick ever.

1-Carmelo is top 15,

1-Carmelo is top 15, possibly top 10, but not top 5.

2-I agree completly

3-I disagree, boston is the best, but it is very close and they have to stay healthy

4-Pacers in the playoffs? I think they have a very good chance, but I'm not sure I'm ready to predict it happening. It will be close though.

5-13points, 9assists, and 5 rebounds. And no all-star

6-I agree. I might be biased, but Pau is extremely efficient from anywhere on the court. He has the best low post moves of the 3, and is clearly the best passer. His defense stepped up huge last season.

7-I agree with starting Pietrus. A perimter of Lewis, Carter, and Nelson probably wouldn;t gaurd anyone. Pietrus did a very solid job defensively aganst Lebron.

1-Carmelo Anthony is a top 5

1-Carmelo Anthony is a top 5 player in the NBA right now-
--No way. Its Lebron, D Wade, Dwight Howard, Kobe, and CP3. Its out of order but they are the 5 best in the game right now..

2-Jordan Hill will be an all-star, and Memphis should have drafted him number 2 instead of Thabeet and trading for Randolph.
--Jordan Hill will be a good player IMO, I like his game and he shows more than I thought of him at 1st (I thought he was a basic, athletic catch and finish guy). He has a mid-range game and he is a good weakside defender. I dont think he was deserving on the Number 2 pick, that wouldve been a huge mistake. I also dont think I wouldve passed on Thabeet considering his size and shot-changing skills (even though he isnt very good) and took Hill. He has size and he can get better, but who really wouldve taken Hill over Thabeet during draft time? Not anybody. Hill was just as big a question mark as Thabeet was.

3-Boston will be the third best team in the east next year due primarily to age.
--They will be the 1st best team because they have too much talent and saavy to be a 3rd seed.

4-The Indiana Pacers, led by development of hibbert, Granger, Rush, Ford, Murphy as well as additions of Watson, Hansbrough, DJones, and the return of Dunleavy, will make the playoffs.
--Lets be realistic here, that team is not good enough to sniff the playoffs. They just dont have playoff level talent on that team. Sorry.

5-Rondo will put up about 16-8-8 and be an all-star next year.
--I think he'll get 15 ppg, 6 rebs, and 9 assists.

6-Pau Gasol showed much more toughness and has passed both Amare and Bosh among pf's due to his complete game.

--He is still soft and is better than Bosh, but a healthy Amare is better than Gasol.

7-Orlando will keep Lewis at the pf spot and start Pietrus at the sf spot, instead of starting Bass at the pf and sliding Lewis down to sf.

--That wont happen. They invested too much in Bass to let him come off the bench. Pietrus is a 2nd team player and a 4th (at best) or 5th option offensively as a corner 3 ball shooter. He would not make them a better team starting games.

Iguodala, a couple things I

Iguodala, a couple things I disagree with you on:

I honest to goodness had been saying Memphis should take Hill at number 2 even before the draft. After Griffin, the rest of the lottery was a crap shoot. Thabeet doesn't compliment Gasol well, and Hill was exactly the type of athletic pf who can face the basket they needed.

I'm not ready to pick the Pacers to make the playoffs, but I think it will be very close. They beat a lot of good teams like the Lakers and celtics last year. Not having Dunleavy all season hurt. And I expect bigger contributions from Hibbert and Ford next year. With Granger leading the way, they definitely have a chance.

And for the Orlando line up, I just think having a perimeter of Nelson, Carter, and Lewis would just be too weak defensively. Someone has to gaurd all the elite wing players, and I'm not sure Carter is up to it.

Sitting Vince for Pietrus is

Sitting Vince for Pietrus is silly. If they really wanted to add a defender to their lineup, they wouldve done it last year as well because Turkoglu isnt as any better a defender than Carter. They would lose as much offensively as they would gain defensively by doing that. Vince will put in work defensively, he's a vet and he wants to win a championship.I've seen him change games when he plays D, so he will defend.

I didn't suggest sitting

I didn't suggest sitting Vince for Pietrus. I was saying that Lewis should stay at the four so Pietrus could play defense on the perimiter players while Vince took the lesser of the two wing players. Bass is good, but I don't think he necessarily more valuable then Pietrus. Plus, one of the big advantages the Magic had against teams was that opponents had trouble matching up with a perimeter pf like Lewis. He stretched the defenses to help give Dwight room. Bass will bring other things to the table, but he won't stretch defenses.

Bass is a lot more valuable

Bass is a lot more valuable than Pietrus, he allows everyone on their team to play their natural positions. Lewis is already a mismatch at SF because of his size, and Bass does give them a player than can stretch the D to a certain extent, he is a very good mid-range shooter who can function as far as 18 ft out. He isnt the complete spreader of the floor Lewis is, but he can hit jumpers and stretch the D. Bass makes them a better team.

Possibly. Honestly, I know

Possibly. Honestly, I know teams like to have a set starting lineup to get comfortable and have a rythim, but if ever there was a good reason to switch lineups depending on the opponent, I think this would be it. Start Bass against teams with pf's that will abuse Lewis on the low block. And start Pietrus against teams with a superstar wing player that neither Lewis nor Carter can handle. Keep in mind, the more penetration the perimeter gives up, the more likelyhood of foul trouble for Dwight.

No way, the Magic should

No way, the Magic should continue creating matchup problems for other teams... that's how they dooooooo. while bass might be able to hit a jumper out to 18-20 ft, that's not the shot that any coach wants, especially from bass. just cuz he can hit that (at best 40%), doesn't mean he should be taking that. take your chances with 4 3pt shooters to really hurt ppl if they wanna collapse on dwight, otherwise, pound it to the big man!

I dont see them bringing in

I dont see them bringing in Bass and giving up a piece in the future (Courtney Lee) for Carter to start Pietrus. They shouldve not got anybody at all if thats what they planned on doing.

Xbadgerhustler, your the same guy that said the Thunder should start the much less effective players Thabo Sefolosha or Kyle Weaver instead of James Harden. I think you like letting the best players come off the bench, and letting less effective players start games. Sometimes you just let the best players play.

lol, you really think bass

lol, you really think bass is a whole lot better than pietrus? bass has never gone up against a starting 5 in his life. yea, he looked good against bench guys, but who knows what'll happen against starting 4s

never said weaver over harden, but sefolosha, yes. That way Durant (and harden) doesn't have to guard the elite wings...

theres more to basketball than putting your 'best' 5 out to start the game. Jason TerrY? Manu?

He's more valuable than Pietrus is. I dont know whos exactly "better" because they dont play the same position. But I think if they had to choose who to get rid of, it would be Pietrus over Bass.

bkballer why can't thabeet

bkballer why can't thabeet improve if hill can because he hasnt played ball long?.thabeet hasnt played ball longer and that includes pickup ball( hill played pickup ball for a long time just not organized ball) thabeet also has improved each year. i remeber him as a freshman and i didnt think he would ever get better but he did each year) i do agree memphis shouldnt have drafted him though because 1 marc gasol is good and 2 gasol is not a pf...also im a big laker fan and i do agree gasol is one of the best pf in the nba. after saying that i also have to say hes still soft, i spend half of the laker games yelling at him to stop being so soft and acting liek hes been shot when a player takes the basketball from him or just watching as some guard/sf snatches a rebound that shoul dbe his or when he lets a pf go hard at the rim without getting over and cutting him off even if he doesnt plan on trying to block the shot
