No idea why Thabeet was taken 2nd. He won't be as good as Gasol. Not even as athletic as Gasol and far less skilled. He shouldn't have been in the top 10. Power forward was what the Grizzlies needed and they got Zach Randolph so it looks like Thabeet won't even be a real factor for their team for at least 2 years. Much worst bust than Kwame Brown I see.
Is that a forum topic or just a Thabeet-bashing?
I think that drafting Thabeet second was a bad decision on the Grizzles behalf. At best I see him as a Defensive specialist in the NBA and that seems a little high for him but maybe he can develop an offensive game and prove his worth as a successful NBA player.
i agree with that defensive specialist suggestion, but I think if he can average 10 points a game, that's good enough, because that's all mutumbo and tyson chandler do(mutombo averaged 11 for his career and tyson chandler 8, so he'll be cool if he's in that range, and his defensive affect is as good as advertised.
HE WILL NEVER MAKE THE HALL OF FAME..BUT HE'S GOIN TO SURPRISE A FEW PEOPLE...HE NEEDS TO PLAY WITH A GREAT POINT GUARD..LIKE CHRIS PAUL,NASH, OR DERON WILLIAMS THAT'LL GET HIM THE BALL IN THE RIGHT PLACES AND THE RIGHT TIME..THAT'S WHY I THINK OKAFOR WILL HAVE A CAREER YEAR PLAYING WITH CHRIS PAUL THIS SEASON...
not as athletic as marc gasol????..is that a joke?
They reached on a # 2 pick that wasn't there biggest need. Gasol did a good job. Eventually he may be better suited for back up center, but for now he was good enough and you can't play Thabeet and Gasol at the same time. There biggest need was PF but no one worth that high pick either. They were better off taking Rubio. Either to keep him and compete with Conley or possibly trade him. Maybe a trade of Rubio to NY for sign and trade deal of Lee , Tony Douglas and 2nd round pick or sing and trade of Nate, Jordan Hill and Tony Douglas. Maybe Thabeet would have fell to the Wolves and they would have had Flynn and Thabeet to play along side Jefferson (at PF) and bring Love off the bench.
Would have made more sense. And all 3 teams probably would have been in a better position now. But hey.
I think it was a decent pick for Memphis. I don't think Thabeet is going to be ready to be a starting center in the league right away and having a solid player like Gasol to play right away will allow Thabeet to come off the bench and ease his way into playing time rather than a trial by fire approach which i don't think would work for him. He will provide a shot blocking presence off the bench and you could even run a Thabeet at center and Gasol at power forward for a big line-up against west teams with 2 bigs like Portland or LA. I don't think Thabeet will be more than a defensive player in the league, but it was a team need Memphis had and they chose the best player available to fit that position.
It wasn't the best of drafts. I don't think it was the best thing to do by drafting thabeet. I was screammmmming for so long that there was a gaping hole at the 4. I wish they could've found a way to trade for either hawes or thompson from sacramento, or gave david lee a big contract.
I am happy that most here think marc should be the starter, i've been battling people who think a 7'3 center who's never stepped foot on an nba court is better than a 7'1-280lb center with actual moves in this league..oh ya...he's a gasol also...one of the 2 gasol's that destroyed the USA team a few years back and won that championship. I'm glad a lot of you are liking gasol more, cause i do.
Got owned by everybody in the summer League Blair was better then Thabeet and i dont think Thabeet is anybetter then Sene for at least 2 years and by the time he is any good he will be on the high end of his prime years sad.......
Sene, was pretty terrible, I think 3 years playing under Calhoun and in the toughest collegiate conference last year will make him better than Sene immediately, but thats not saying much. Thabeet had a pretty awful summer league showing, but I think he can at least be a solid defensive backup by mid season. You can't teach height and he is a pretty good athlete for someone his size. I look for him to be about at the 6 ppg 5 rpg and 1.5 bpg as a rookie, but i expect a late season climb to reach those numbers. He hasn't been playing basketball all that long and I think project is a very good term to describe him, but I don't immediately peg him as a Sene.
Well, I'd rather have Gasol. Memphis drafted on needs more than the better player available. Why draft Harden, Rubio, Flynn, Curry, DeRozan, Evans who are all guards when Memphis already has Gay and Mayo. Drafting one of those players would be stunting their growth. Mayo is going to be a star in this league and Conley has been improving every year he has been in the league. If I was Memphis and I wasn't going to choose Thabeet, I would have went for Jordan Hill who could have played PF and then have Gasol at C.
A solid, young line-up that has great potential. Thabeet though? I guess we'll wait and see what he can do. I think he won't average more than 15ppg, but he will be a defensive specialist in the years to come, hopefully.
if memphis traded their #2 pick and got the 5th or 6th pick instead, they probly would've drafted jordan hill. but at #2, hill would not deserve to go that high. i agree with the idea of drafting rubio and trading him to the knicks in a way they would be able to get david lee. but i understood mephis's reasoning of picking thabeet, even if they were to get david lee, they would still be missing a defensive presence. i think thabeet is going to suprise most of you, he'll defnitely be a force on defense.
most big men dont play great in the summer leauge because most f not all the guards are all about getting theres. plus thabeet is raw everyone already knew that so no one expects him to come in and dominate from day one. i think it was a pretty good pick considering the draft. yea they could have used a 4 but what four do you draft that high?..j.hill..i dont think so..conley played very well last year so i dont understand why fans want him gone..he had a good year and hes only going into his third year at one of the hardest if not the hardest postion to learn in the nba
