Connie Hawkins

Blast from the past:

Connie Hawkins was a New York playground streetball legend who starred at the University of Iowa.

He was unrightfully black-balled from the NBA (racism?) until he was 27 years old due to being a victim of a point shaving operation in New York, even though he had been playing basketball at the University of Iowa. His name had come up during a few interviews, but he was never charged with anything.

When he entered the NBA at age 27, during his rookie season he averaged 27 ppg. He's now in the NBA hall-of-fame.

It's a shame what the NBA unfairly did to him. I posted this because many people don't hear about these stories and this is the Web site where information like this belongs.

I'm gonna have to do some

I'm gonna have to do some more research on him. I was always under the impression that he was a great athlete, but pretty limited skill wise. And I had never heard of him being potentially blackballed. Now I'm curious.

just did some research on

just did some research on the Hawk. He actually averaged 24.8 ppg during his rookie nba season at 27. It was all down hill from there. He never averaged more then 20 after that, and after 8 seasons his career average was 16.5 ppg. I don't know if he was blackballed due to racism, but the nba encyclopedia, google, and wikipedia all don't mention anything about race, just a questionable point shaving scandal.

Yeah, but Illperez22, imagine being held out of basketball for six years. After college, he had to play with the freaking Harlem Globetrotters. He wasted away for years. Also, you say a questionable point shaving scandal, but does it really take six or seven years to investigate the incident. Why not let him play since he was never arrested, booked, arrainged or indicted? Everyone knew how good he was. Then, his rookie season, he shook off the rust and was basically one of the top players in the league.
