Rank the Free Agent Signings

Time to put on your GM hat. Thinking of the team needs and who they signed and for what type of contract I have ranked 15 signings with explanation of each. Let me hear what you think. Who needs to be higher who needs to be lower.

My Rankings:
1. Lamar Odom 4 years/$33MM
Dont know what the Lakers were thinking when they pulled their offer to Odom. They just won the title and Odom's versatility was a key component. The guy was unselfish and came off the bench when asked to give up his starting role. He play any position on the court causing all sorts of mismatches. He is still only 30 so the 4 year contract takes him to 34. The signing make the Lakers the favorite to repeat.

2. Andre Miller 2 years/14years
I think this was a great move by Portland. I feel with the young talent they have signed they are ready to make a jump (will be hard with the rest of the west teams reloading thoughing). Miller is an upgrade to Blake and likes to play uptempo which should work with the young legs portland has. Averaged 16ppg 5 rpg and 7apg last year. It is only a two year contract so you are not going to be playing Miller into his late 30's (33 right now).

3. Paul Milsap 4years/$32MM
Once Boozer leaves the door is wide open for Milsap who had great production when given the minutes. $8MM a year for a player who should average a double double is great value.

4. Marvin Williams 5/38
Left UNC after his freshman year and still progressing. Only gets 10 shots a game in Atlanta but has the talent I think to be a 20ppg scorer. Locking him up for 5 years was a smart move. Would have been bad if they lost Williams with getting nothing back like they did the year before when Childress went to Greece.

5. Rasheed Wallace 2/12
Great addition to Boston's front line. Still a good defensive player who has had success slowing Dwight Howard. Known to be well liked by teammates. Can still extend defense with his out side shooting. The right signing for Boston to make it back to finals.

6. Charlie Villenueva 5/35
The guy is 6-11 with a great offensive skill set. Pistons in semi-rebuilding mode and Charlie should be coming into his prime during this contract as he is now 25 years old. So the Pistons basically got their starting PF for the next 5 years in his prime for 7MM a year. Increased his scoring 4.5 points to 16 last year on only 27mpg.

7. Hedo Turkoglu 5/53
Smart signing from the perspective of adding talent to please Bosh and increase his willingness to resign with the team. Signing puts Toronto back in Playoffs after missing last year. 5 year contract keeps Hedo in Toronto past his prime to the age of 35 years old. Toronto was one of the weakest teams on defense last year, I dont see Hedo improving the team on that end of the court.

8. Jason Kidd 3/25
Was a must sign for Dallas. Only a few years left with Dirk in his prime so needed to keep Kidd to at least have a chance for a title. Past his prime but still makes his teammates better. Would have liked to have seen this as a two year contract instead of a 3 but interest from Knicks may have forced Dallas to three.

9. Ben Gordon 5/55
Yes 11MM is a lot of money to pay a 6-3 SG who is known to have suspect defense. The guy is an elite scorer who can create his own offense. There are only a handful of guys who can score like Gordon. He is 26 years old so the contract takes him through his prime.

10. Shawn Marion 5/39
Mavericks got him at a deep discount from his last contract. Production has really fallen off since leaving Nash and the Phox system but he is still a multi faceted player who can score/rebound/steal/block. Still averaged 13pg 8.5rpg. Maybe teaming with Kidd will increase numbers. Important signing for Dallas as stated earlier as Dirk has a few years left to make run for title.

11. Chris Andersen 5/26
Important piece of Denver's run last year. Great shot blocker who changes the energy of the game. Quality big men who block shots are hard to find...Denver now has one for the next 5 years.

12. Trevor Ariza 5/32
I don't understand the logic here. Yes he is a good defensive player that will fit in with Houston Defense mind set but I dont see him being able to create own offense. Huge benefactor of other Laker players creating shots for him. I see him as another Austin Croshere...great playoff run for Pacers in contract year than did nothing after contract.

13. Ron Artest 5/33
Why 5 years?? Houston wasnt offering more than a year. Already 30 years old shot 40% from field. Takes questionable shots. More shots taken by Artest mean less for Kobe and Gasol. Dont like that equation. I havent even mentioned the behavioral problems yet.

14. Marcin Gortat 5/34
I just dont like this size contract for someone who is not proven yet. 4ppg 4.5rpg sounds like Jerome James stats before he blew up in playoffs against Kings and got huge contract with Knicks. Unless Orlando plans on moving him why sign him with Howard. Plus they signed Brandon Bass for 4 years.

15. Anderson Varegao 6/50
WHAT?? no idea what is going on here. Yes he is a great hustle player and the team is trying everything to make LBJ happy but 50 million for side show bob. They guy has no offensive game and is an average rebounder and not a shot blocker. Feel they could have spent the money in a much wiser way here like making a play for a more athletic wing who can matchup with Orlando perimeter players.

Other contracts I didnt rank because they were not as significant signings.

Jarrett Jack 4/20
Bibby 3/18
Bass 4/18

Bass was a significant

Bass was a significant signing. You will see that this season. He was one of the better free agent deals IMO. I also think u should move Villanueva up slightly. Andre Miller was a pretty good deal. Gortat isn't as bad as you think. He is very effective even though he gets limited minutes.

Alot of these players got overpaid. Gordon was just a dumb signing. Varejao was the worst by far lol. Marion & Kidd are both on the decline. Hedo is a little overrated in my book...I wouldn't have given him that much cash.

Ariza is the biggest question mark for me. He didn't put up good stats with the Lakers. It will be interesting to see if he steps up to the challenge or folds with his bigger role & more playing time with the Rockets.

I agree. 5 years of Ron

I agree. 5 years of Ron Artest...No thank you. Bass was a terrible signing for that price. I think Ariza will be a really good player in Houston

QHaynes- Why do you think Bass was a terrible signing but Ariza was a good one?

4 years 18 mill for

4 years 18 mill for Bass...you could have brought a 1st round pick and added Blair or find another guy worth less. To be honest you could have gotten back Hedo for the price you paid Gortat and Bass. When you lose 2 good players (Alston and Lee), you needed more. That's why Matt Barnes was a good addition.

I like the Ariza for Artest swap for Houston. People don't know, Artest did some crazy things in Houston and was not reported. Ariza is younger and he never started yet averaged 8ppg last season. I think in a solid starting role, he can average 15ppg,6rpg and 1.1spg and 1.1bpg.

I don't mind the Ariza

I don't mind the Ariza signing. I slightly worry though that he might not play well with higher expectations. He will be asked to do a lot in Houston especially after McGrady leaves. I think Houston overpaid for him a bit but nothing major. I agree about Artest too...I heard he did some crazy stuff too. I like Artest but he is a character. Lakers are taking a gamble...hopefully Odom & Kobe can keep him calm. I take that back...I want the Lakers to crumble lol.

Bass is better than Blair. Bass is an above average nba player. Signing Bass & Gortat was much more important than keeping Hedo since they already got Vince. Losing Lee wasn't a factor, neither was Alston when you consider Pietrus was arguably just as good as Lee if not better & Nelson is healthy again. I really like the moves Orlando made. Ryan Anderson & Barnes will be good bench players too. I like Orlando to make it to the finals fairly easy if they stay healthy. They have 0 weaknesses unlike every other Eastern conference team.
