I know it seems like this question is revisited every year, but who is the best big man of the generation, Tim Duncan or Shaquille O'Neal, and who deserves to be rated higher on the all time greats list and who will win another ring first?
Duncan...if im correct, he never missed the playoffs his whole career.
Myself, I gotta say Duncan. The most coachable player ever. Never heard anyone badmouth him except Joey Crawford, and he makes everyone around him better.
C'mon now, this is easy, Shaq-Fu, Shazaam, Steel. Not only is he the best big man of the generation, but he's put out rap cd's, made movies, and even had a video game or two. All Tim Duncan does besides basketball is swim.
It all depends on which you value more... Dominance or Endurance
Shaq at his peak was hands down the most dominant player in the NBA, heck they even named a defensive strategy after him "Hack-a-Shaq", and several teams built around the idea of defending him during those peak years (Sacramento and Portland - adding as many big men as they could to throw at him during the games).
Duncan on the otherhand has been at top 3 big man in the NBA for pretty much the last 10 seasons, while know one is building their team around the idea of stopping him, he has still been the #1 option of four NBA championship teams and has yet to really shown a significant drop off of his preformance despite his age and how fast big men in the league tend to wear down.
Strong arguments can be made for either guy and I don't know if you could go wrong picking either, I give the nod to Shaq just because of those few years teams actually built around the idea of specificity stopping him.
Still can't stop the reign. 'Nuff said.
(If that makes no sense to you, it was a song Shaq made with B.I.G)
BStar... if we are going by best lyricist I'll vote Duncan because he didn't try to rap ;)
Whatever. I love Duncan, but Shaq still gets the nod.
not to be bias or anything cuz im a huge fan of his,,,but i think u would have to put KG in the discussion as well him and Duncans stats are pretty much the same,,,but i would still go with superman,,,the original haha SHAQ
Yeah KG deffinitely deserves a look.
Yeah KG talent wise has to get a mention, but Tim Duncan had the best career out of both to me but Shaq was so dominant for so long I'd have to go with him
duncan cuz he gets things done and has had so much success with just one team
I WOULD SAY SHAQ..YEARS FROM NOW KIDS WILL BE TALKING ABOUT SUPERMAN...HE CHANGED THE GAME...PEOPLE WHO DON'T FOLLOW B-BALL KNOW WHO SHAQ IS..BUT DUNCAN HAS BEEN SO GOOD FOR SO LONG..THE BEST POWER FORWARD EVER...BUT HE DOES NOTHING OUTSIDE OF BASKETBALL..WHILE SHAQ HAS BECOME AN MEDIA DARLING AND INTERNATIONAL ICON
I am a big fan of Timmy, and I answered this topic the same way the other day. Tim Duncan was drafted by a team that was already a contender and who's franchise player played 7 games the previous season before. We all know this, the Spurs are an amazing squad in the front office and that Tim had the luxury of being a nightmarish PF rather than a center which he would have been on any other team. He may have never missed the play-offs (though Knicksboy, he was injured and missed them the year after he won his first ring), but I still do not think that is a reason to say that makes him superior to Shaq. If you are basing it on awards and All-NBA appearances, than Tim wins it. But, no one makes his teammates life easier than the Big Aristotle, his dominance is well documented and on accomplishment I think it has to be Shaq. The fact that he won only 1 MVP is a joke, and when you look back, he should have won it at least 3 times. Not to mention that Shaq never had the luxury of playing with the caliber of TEAM as a Tim Duncan, although he has had some incredible players as support. I think Tim Duncan would have been a franchise player on any team he joined, and he has lived up to the monstrous expectations people had of him. But, I also can not rate Tim Duncan ahead of Shaquille O'Neal, people seem to find ways to because they rate it by the 2000's or by era, but Shaq had 5 years of being just flat out dominant before Timmy entered the league. Also, it would be interesting to compare how they played against each other, and I believe it is very close. I still say that I rate Shaq 3 all-time and Tim is at best 7-8, though he has a shot at moving up the list, but I doubt he ever takes out Shaq.
id take Duncan he doest look as explosive as he is because of his boring style. dont forget Shaq had either Wade, or Kobe to help him win titles.
Like knicksboy34 said, he never missed the playoffs...he is a true winner and a true champion
Tim Duncan........Never Missed Play-offs, 4 rings, 2 MVPs,
Probably the best PF of all-time
shaq always commanded a double team in his prime, he could get more dunks and lay-ups, and could establish deep post position easily
