Rudy Gay, year 4.
i do hope these posts aren't getting annoying, i'm trying to open others perspectives and have discussions and some fun.
Rudy gay since the beginning of summer...maybe even earlier, has been workin on his rebounding and his game overall. He had a disapointing season last year all around. I was sure, in my mind that he was gonna be an allstar last year. Instead, he takes a big step back and looked passive and had little love for the game. When the grizzlies got mayo, and halfway through the season people were starting to say these 2 aren't meshing together and there were rumors of them not liking each other. Those rumors were put to rest through the second half of the season where the grizzlies started looking better and that chemistry was being achieved and that the only thing standing in their way was a lack of experiece. Though he's on a young rebuilding team that gets a lotta $hit, i hope this was not a part of the reasons he played worse.
I think the addition of randolph will not hurt gay's game. It is silly to think that between mayo/gay/randolph, that all 3 of them couldn't average 16-20 shots a game. even if all 3 averaged 20shots a game, that's still about 60 shots. that would leave...on average..i would say 15-25 left depending on how fast the game is played. The grizzlies want to play a fast uptempo style. hollins opened that up for them, and as we saw...conely got much better all around, ppg, apg, rpg.
Rudy has such a large amount of potential left to discover, and it seems this summer is gonna help him tap into what he's actually worth. To say he won't average more than 20ppg and that mayo won't either is just not thinking. Does anyone remember the old days of garnett, sprewell and cassel being the main offensive pieces...usually combining for 60+ ppg a game? i'm not comparing the talents there...i'm speaking as in opportunity...3 players can average together more than 60 a game.
I think Gay is a guy who does not bring his best 24/7....he comes off Lazy to me. I dunno if he's a #2 option or a #3. He will need to show if he is worth big money
he does look lazy. but this summer he's been working his @ss off. I think he's ready to be what he is.
but this summer he's been working his @ss off
2 WORDS MY FRIEND- Contract Year.
I think Randolph will drop off quite a bit. I think he averages like 15ppg. Mayo & Gay will stay about the same as last year at around 19ppg.
i'm not gonna be pessimestic about it. The man averaged 18ppg and 5rpg with 1bpg last year...and the year before that he averaged 20ppg, 6rpg, 1bpg, 1spg.
What you're saying could be true, but what i'm saying as well could be true.
All 3 could easily average 20ppg. I just think Memphis has too much other talent now that the scoring will spread out more. Conley & Gasol are still improving & becoming better scorers.
i like that view gator. conely could be a 20ppg player...all of a sudden.
I just am really hoping that gay/mayo can score 20+ppg each. It's gonna take that....or 5-6 players scoring 10+ppg for the grizz to make the playoffs. oh, i'm not thinking playoffs next year, i'm thinkin 2010-2011...8th seed...2011-2012 before they become a 2nd round team.
i'm also trying to get this idea out there.
I won't be shocked if mayo/gay average over 20ppg each this coming year. it won't be shocking. I know mayo has the higher chance of 20+ppg. but seeing gay work real hard...and if it is contract year....don't think he doesn't have a chance in hell to get over 20...cause if he can get a huge contract...he's gonna play his @ss off this year.
20 PPG? No way, I can see Conley around 12-14 mark, Gasol 10-12, Randolph scoring 14-18, Gay with 16-20, and Mayo 18-24. Thabeet will get around 6-8 Points and if Marcus Williams is their backup PG he could get around 6 Points and D. Arthur could get around 6-10 as well. So basically all their starters in double digits which is five, but who knows...that's a little optimistic, but they will get alot of playing time and that's 8 Players total right there. I don't know who else they have. They can be a good defensive team too, I don't know Conley's game all that well, but Gay is long and athletic, Mayo I hear is a good defender, Gasol and Thabeet are nice too. I still don't see them keeping that team together for more then 2 more seasons. Mayo or Gay will leave...
His stats fell off because oj mayo is to trigger happy everytime oj comes down the court he shoots a three. Dont get me wrong oj is a good player but he shoots to much and he got a bad shot selection. The season before oj came Rudy average like 22ppg but when oj came he average 19ppg. I think oj thinks that the grizzlies are his team.
I think Rudy Gay is your favorite player. And yes he could get really good, but that's been the case forever. he doesn't have that killer instinct... at least not yet.
The same problem Rudy Gay had at UConn, he still has today. Outstanding talent, but no killer instinct. How bad does he want to be great?
rudy gay is not my favorite player...wade is my favorite player. All i was sayin is that he's been workin pretty hard all summer and that it's not impossible for him to average over 20ppg.
it's fine if you like him alot, he's one of my favorite players. he's just not that great. he makes the game look effortless, but he doesn't always apply himself. i wouldn't call him lazy though
Rudy shoots waaaaaaay too many jumpers for someone with his athleticism. I've seen him bang on two or three people at once, then shoot jumpers the next five times down. He's lazy on defense, not staying in his stance and often going for blocks and steals. O.J. did take shots away from him, but that should've been a signal for him to take it to the hoop more often.
O.J. shouldn't be the number one option on this team. He has one of the prettiest jumpers in the entire league, but he struggles with getting past his man and finishing at the rim. I think that he can improve upon this to a certain extent, but he's never gonna be a great penetrator/finisher. I'm kinda puzzled by his decision to try and move to point guard, especially with the development of Conley. He has the lateral quickness to stay with most of them and the vision to find other guards, but he doesn't have the ability to get by most of them. Unless he adds a post-up game to his arsenal, he's going to struggle even more.
i see rudy gay kinda like lamar odom not in their games but in personality don't put your hopes on them carrying your team but as a 2nd or 3rd option they are fine.
That was a good assessment. I agree w/ you 100%.
Gay is as fast as a deer and has world class athleticism. He can get in the lane and score easily. So why doesn't he? No killer instinct and he needs to develop a nastiness to his game guys like Lebron have. Theoretically he should be the first option for the Grizzlies and their offense should revolve around him, but he (Gay) won't assert himself an take over like he should. He was supposed to take college b-ball by storm in his last year, but it never happened due to his lack of taking over games like he should have. For example, in the region final game against George Mason, Gay was easily the most talented player on the court by far. Gay was being guarded by a 6'4 player whom he was faster than and much stronger than. The George Mason frontcourt's center was only 6'7! All Gay did though was settle for his jumper though and Uconn lost... I'm telling you guys, Gay could be amazing if he would take over and assert himself and play like the franchise player he should be and that Memphis needs him to be!
Rudy does not attack the basket enough. He does settle for the J way too much. He should look to get more easy points from the line. He does not like contact. He has a lot of talent, he needs to want to kill the other team plain and simple.
Rudy Gay is just like Josh Smith, and they're 2 of my favorite players...I love athletic 3's, but these guys piss me off, supreme athleticism, strong bodies, but they'd rather shoot jumpers than go to the rack where they can't be stopped!!!
I lived in Mississippi for a year, so to catch an NBA game I'd have to drive either 2hrs to NO, 2:30 hrs to Memphis, or 6 hrs to ATL...I would usually chose Memphis cuz they're tix are so cheap I could sit almost courtside for the price I would pay for a mid-section seat in my hometown(LA)...and everytime I would drive home so disappointed in this guy after every game, idk what it is with him, but he really doesn't want it!!!
He's had a really good summer, and outplayed Durant in the team USA game, hopefully he can do that for the whole season cuz I would hate to see such talent go to waste!!!
