Coach K and Duke Basketball
I think this Team USA gig is helping him alot. Well if I was him I would use it to my advantage. It would be a great pitch. But Duke hasnt gotten enough athletic recruits due to their style of play (spread offense, with 3 point shooters and smart but athletically limited players) and now is the perfect time to get some difference makers. He should use his experience with the Team USA to land some stud recruits like Barnes and Knight, and get Duke to the Final Four, but he doesnt like to recruit 1-and-done guys because he likes a long-term program.
Yeah I heard Barnes is close to signing with the Blue Devils, if he does that'll be huge cause he'll bring in more recruits also, cause they'll be dominate again. I dont think he'll stay too long but the thing with Duke players not doing nothing in the league is going to change real soon I believe
I feel like Duke really hasn't gotten it done in the last 5-6 years and possibly more. The team usa thing with kobe and lebron saying that if they had to go to college it would be duke is great, but it's not that special...a kid's going to go to a school that's best for him...not kobe or lebron. On a side note duke seems to be in love with slow, unathletic, white players who can shoot. This is why they haven't won a title in the past few years. There's nothing wrong with having a few guys like this, but when almost all of your big men fit this description...it's a problem. They need to get some real athletic big men with skill like people at unc. Duke has no inside presence and just because your offense revolves around shooting threes doesn't mean you can have an athletic beast down low...also when a player goes to duke, you're not going to get special numbers since they play such a team game. This is not bad but for people trying to go to the league it can hurt a little bit...especially when you're no where near winning a title either. So you're sacrificing quite a bit in my opinion but you're also getting a lot back somewhat. Look at the duke players in the nba....not that many are something special...As for knight and barnes...it would be pretty big for duke to get some athletic players with skill...but still doesn't solve that mystery inside...
Yea knicksboy I'm a Duke fan to and were looking good in 2010.Barnes I think we are in the lead for and as for knight I think he will go to Uconn or UF but I would rather have kyrie irving than knight.Barnes is a program changer and he seems like the kind of guy that would come to duke.I think the grant hill comparison is spot on I believe. Also mason plumlee could be that low post presence in a couple of years.GO DUKE
Quincy miller is another recruit to look out for in 2011.He has been compared to kevin durant.A lot of people think the USA experience is hurting us but it has just been a few missed recruits.Greg Monroe was supposed to go to Duke but went to Gtown at the last minute. If we had him last year we might have been a final four team. But seriously how can working with the best players in the world hurt us
I think Duke's biggest problem with getting big men is that (at least to me) most of the athletic HS big men these days are knuckleheads! They've all been in the spotlight for so long because of their size and AAU basketball and it's getting them involved in sketchy business w/ agents etc....
I'd say Monroe wouldn't fall into that category, but guys like Renardo Sidney, Samardo Samuels (that's just a vague memory, but i thought he had red flags), Lance Stephenson.... those guys aren't the typical guys that Coach K gets.
that, and UNC and Roy Williams get all the best players now! (Henson, for example)
Wow... Lol, lots of pretty good guards coming in for Duke with Barnes, Curry, and Dawkins...
Have you heard anything about this guy?

Hopefully this kid will consider Duke's offer :/
He's a big man, and Duke should try extra hard to get him. Him and Barnes would make them contenders for the Final 4. Especially if they get Knight. Josh Smith is a good low post player with a nice mix of lost post moves and his size will make him a factor at the rim. Nice fundamental big man, good fit for Duke.
It's a solid guard school. Some have came out there historically. I think Knight is the real deal. I think he is better then John Wall and If I was Duke, I'm banging on his door asking for him to join us.
I think USA basketball and Seth Curry will bring in some more 5 star guys
1) Any school in the ACC is a good "guard" school. That's why it's known by many as the "guard" conference.
2) Duke has limited recruiting because of the strict academic requirements. They DO NOT take students who are lazy and/or don't go to class. This is a turn-off to a lot of guys. Did you know Duke REGULARLY has 4.0 ballers and many who are a solid 3.0+? I hate Duke because they are my rival--but I respect them because they have an unprecedented academic standards and are so successful. Did you know that they have sent more people to the NBA than any other school in the last 10 or 20 years? They have become one of the winning-est programs in and out of the tournament as well? Mind you, they have done the majority of this all in the last 20ish years? Passing teams who have had solid basketball programs for twice as long!
If I were a kid I'd strongly consider Duke b/c Coach K is the BEST coach in college basketball. He's better than Dean Smith was (although Roy is starting to challenge him). Duke hasn't been a title contender since J.J.'s last year, but that's not bad. Down years for Duke are a lot of BCS schools successful years. They still make the tournament and still get nearly 30 wins a year.
Yes, the last few years haven't been the best for recruiting, probably because after a while kids want to make themselves famous at somewhere new. That cycle might be coming back. Duke's problems since 2006 haven't been, as these racist comments would have you believe, because of "slow, unatheletic white players." Duke just hasn't recruited a legitimate post player since Sheldon Williams. That could be for a lot of reasons, none of which we'll ever know. But don't start sleeping on Duke. If Gerald Henderson doesn't have one of the worst games of his life then they beat Villanova and go on to play Pitt last year. That was without a true post player.
Ryan Kelley and Mason Plumlee are 2 really good bigs. They are both nearly 7ft, can dribble the ball, have a good faceup game, and seem to have long arms. No more Brian Zoubek for Duke. Couple that with Singler moving into the wing and you are looking for a deadly team next year.
(But my Tarheel's are going to sweep 'um again!!! HAHAH, lol)
There's 4 other positions on the court. And Jason Williams could have been an all-time great if not for his motorcycle accident. That dude was sick. Watch the Maryland game highlights where Duke comes from 10 back in 60 seconds again. Give me chills and I HATE Duke.
But you gotta give respect where respect is due.
Let me just say this. If Singler doesn't bolt and stays for his senior year, Duke will be the favorites in 2010-2011. With the guards coming in, seasoned veterans, and 2 years under Kelly's and Plumlee's belt, that could be another 2001 type season.
Even is Singler bolts, that class coming in mentioned in this thread, with Seth's sharpshooting (his bro and dad say Seth has the best stroke), will still be VERY deadly.
1. Coach K isnt better than Dean Smith was.
2. Duke is always a good team, no doubt about it. Thats not the point though. I know that Duke will not get to the Final 4 until thy get some bigs and more athletic defenders on the wing. Plain and simple. They have never been a team, for as long as Ive been watching them, to play more than 8 or 9 guys. They dont ever have alot of depth and now its hurting them because there 2nd rotation has been weak ever since Reddick and Williams left, so they dont last past the Sweet 16.
If Dean Smith was as good as everyone said he is, he would have won more than 2 titles, especially with the talent that came through UNC.
Coach K does more with less than any coach I've ever seen. He adjusts to games wonderfully, doesn't panic, and seems to find a way to get it done. 4 Straight Final Fours from 1988-1992. That's INCREDIBLE, garnering 2 back to back championships in that time. They hit the Final Four several more times in the '90's I believe, and if so many people from the 2001 team didn't leave, I doubt Maryland wins in 2002.
Dead Smith had a lot of chances to win multiple titles but for some reason, teams with Jerry Stackhouse, Vince Carter, Antwan Jamison just couldn't get it done. I'd argue, that if Coach K had those same players (having the recruiting power of the 'University of Michael Jordan,' then there's no telling what he would accomplish.
Dean Smith was a better recruiter (something that drove him away from coaching because it wore him out), and yes--he could accomplish some seemingly impossible feats on the court as well. However, if the players were the same, and I could pick 1 coach to lead my team. I'm going with Coach K (I'm wearing a UNC shirt right now too). But I have to admit what Tarheel fans not in denial understand. Coach K is one of the greatest basketball coaches ever.
Yea but Duke is Duke. Why go to Tech? I mean they had solid PG's (Marbury, Anderson) but they are not known for Winning. Either he should go to Duke, UConn or UNC. I say Duke because there is a open PG spot and the last 1 and done guy we had actually started and we made it to the Final 4 I believe (Luol Deng)
Georgia Tech has good recruiting power because of Atlanta most likely. Kids like hanging out in the ATL. But whenever they have solid teams, they never seem to pan out.
If you look at the quality of players on their team last year, regardless of how good the ACC is in basketball, there is no reason they only won like 1 or 2 games in conference play. Whenever they do put it together and get into the tournament, they don't win titles either.
If I'm the next LeBron James, and I want to have access to a title in college, these are the schools I'm going to if I were picking today:
UNC
Duke
Kansas
UCONN
4 best coaches IMO right now in basketball. If I want to contend for a title, not only have all of these teams won at least 2, they have all won in the last decade, the only non-HoF is Bill Self, who is on the right track to become one.
I know some Billy Donovan, Rick Pitino, and John Calipari fans will probably come out of the woodworks so this is all I'll say.
60% of the last 10 titles have gone to the 4 schools I've mentioned, who all have HISTORIES of winning. If I'm picking a school to contend for a title, I'm going there.
Knicksboy, hahaha the guy is in John Wall denial
he thinks half the PG's in the world are better than Wall
"I think Knight is the real deal. I think he is better then John Wall"
that proves it right there totally irrelevant and it seems like u cant stop hatin on Wall
I think Knight is the real deal. I think he is better then John Wall
I said that days ago man. Focus. Now you gotta get off of Wall. I never said Wall would suck I'm not calling him the greatest PG ever. I like Brandon Knight. He has a excellent set of skills, a actual jumper and he is a lockdown defender...today.
Also, answer my post question...
I considered UCLA and ended up taking them off.
If they had won the title in one of those 3 trips they would be on top of my list. But if I'm a kid looking at the situation, this is what I see.
The last title for them was 14 years ago in 1995. They've had good teams since then, but haven't sealed the deal. Before 1995, they had a 20 year drought, winning their 10th in 1975.
If this was the 60's or the 70's and I wanted a title, you'd be a fool not to go there. But since the game of college basketball drastically changed in terms of talent, shot clock, etc around 1980, I'd rethink that choice.
A 20 year and and on-going 14 year gap (although the 3 Final Fours WOULD make me think twice), I'd probably go on the side of history and say it'll be a few more years until they win again.
it's ur post and YOU MENTIONED Wall FIRST on a post that has NOTHING to do with him
"I said that days ago man. Focus. Now you gotta get off of Wall. I never said Wall would suck I'm not calling him the greatest PG ever. I like Brandon Knight. He has a excellent set of skills, a actual jumper and he is a lockdown defender...today
so that doesn't make sense"
and about the post i like Harrison Barnes i think if Duke can get him that would be a a huge pickup if they can get Knight ( whom yes i do like as a player alot just dont think he is gonna ever be better than Wall IMO ) too they can have 2 top 5 draft picks and potentially a #1
How Roy Williams stopped the Wear Twins from going to UCLA is beyond me. The next Lopez "twin duo" in the Pac-10 to top (hopefully) what Stanford did a few years back. They played for Mater Dei...just seemed like a match made in heaven.
But Roy got them to cross the country though to join a STACKED UNC Frontcourt with Thompson, Davis, Henson, Zeller. 6 Deep with those two. LOL
that's cuz california is like its own country! and east coast kids never see UCLA games on TV or on ESPN.
UCLA sucked for a while cuz a guy named STEVE LAVIN ruined the program... and then ben howland came and turned things around with that 3-guard recruiting class (Farmar-Shipp-Afflalo, which probably would have won a title if Shipp wouldn't have had those knee problems) and with those 2 Cameroonian forwards (luc richard mbah a moute and aboya)
If you dont know...I'm also a Duke Basketball fan. I was looking at the Class of 2010 Basketball players and out of the 60-70 players (estimated) alot of them (about 12-15) are considering Duke. Including Harrison Barnes and Brandon Knight (who I think will be better then John Wall) I think the interest in Duke is and will continue to increase because Coach K is coaching USA basketball and seeing the good reviews of players like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James (Both who said if they had to go to college...they would have probably ended up at Duke).
Do you think Duke has a good chance to add Both Barnes and Knight or either of them? Also, do you think we will see more players go to Duke now Coach K is coaching Team USA and is getting love from 2 top NBA superstars?
