Boys’ basketball: Maranatha gives Coach Tim Tucker his 400th career victory

It was a feisty Tim Tucker on Thursday night. The Maranatha coach picked up a technical early in the game against Oak Park. But Maranatha players made sure their coach was happy at the end, delivering a 60-53 victory in the quarterfinals of the Marnatha tournament, giving Tucker his 400th career victory.

Tyler Dorsey scored 21 points and Sean Romero added 15. Freshman Riley Battin scored 18 points and Michael Alvarez added 16 for Oak Park.

Maranatha will play Cantwell-Sacred Heart in the semifinals on Friday. The other semifinal is Chino Hills-Price. Cantwell-Sacred Heart upset Alemany, 64-52. The Cardinals played flawless basketball in the first half, opening a 20-point halftime lead, then withstood several challenges in the second half. Five players reached double figures, but the big shot of the night was a three-pointer by 6-foot-11 Gligorije Rakocevic, who finished with 13 points and eight rebounds and stopped the Warriors’ rally with his three in the fourth quarter. Junior guard Jacob Davison had 15 points. Shacquille Dawkins led Alemany with 15 points.

In the Mission Vieo tournament, Orange Lutheran improved to 3-0 with a 76-57 win over Anaheim Canyon. Rogers Printup had 20 points and Keisean Lucier-South and Chris Williams added 12 apiece.

In the Ocean View tournament, Long Beach Millikan defeated Verdugo Hills, 77-66. Andrian Gutierrez had 27 points and 12 rebounds for Verdugo Hills.

Crespi won the West Torrance championship with a 56-51 win over Marina. Freshman Taj Regans had 11 points. Chaminade won the St. Monica tournament with a 67-52 win over Hamilton. Dylan Cuenca was tournament MVP. Nick Henzgen scored 18 points. St. Monica defeated University, 81-61.

In the Westchester tournament, former Taft Coach Derrick Taylor picked up a victory when St. John Bosco knocked off the Toreadors, 66-51. Vance Jackson and Rodney Henderson each scored 17 points. Damian Wilson led Taft with 20 points. The Braves will play Beverly Hills in the semifinals. Chance Comanche had 26 points and 17 rebounds in Beverly Hills’ 72-54 win over North Torrance.

In the Centennial tournament, Etiwanda defeated Rancho Christian, 79-66. Kameron Edwards scored 20 points and Jordan Naughton 16.

In El Paso, Texas, Granada Hills defeated El Paso Eastlake, 61-48. Michael Kalu and Michael Mensah had 17 points apiece.

In the Sierra Vista tournament, Thousand Oaks stayed unbeaten with a 47-43 win over Keppel and will play Damien, which knocked off Diamond Ranch, 85-58. Malik Fitts had 26 points and 10 rebounds. Jeremy Hemsley added 20 points. Glendora defeated Fremont, 65-35, and will face Colony in the semifinals.

In the Mira Costa tournament, Brentwood defeated Torrance, 62-38. Andrew Gardiner had 20 points. Mira Costa defeated Harvard-Westlake, 67-59. Alex Copeland had 23 points for Harvard-Westlake.

Servite defeated Trabuco Hills, 53-42. Trevor Teinen had 18 points. Santa Margarita defeated San Diego O’Farrel, 95-24. Jordan Guest had 17 points.

In the Buckley tournament, Crescenta Valley defeated St. Genevieve, 63-49. Malibu defeated Ribet, 83-67.

Viewpoint defeated Yshiva, 82-49. Miye Oni had 22 points and Christian Juzang added 18 points. In the Nordhoff tournament, Newbury Park defeated Liberty, 62-58. Shane White had 15 points and Jordan Bibby 14.
