Video: Top recruit breaks New York scoring record
See junior Joseph Girard pass Lance Stephenson as the Empire State's scoring leader.
He's got 15 college offers, from schools such as Michigan, Louisville and Connecticut.
Glens Falls (N.Y.) junior guard
Joseph Girard III is rated a 3-star prospect.
But as of Tuesday, Girard is ranked No. 1 in the basketball-rich state of New York.
With more than a season remaining in his prep career, the 6-foot-1 standout broke the state career scoring mark previously held by current Indiana Pacers guard Lance Stephenson.
With 1:41 remaining in a 74-68 win at Amsterdam, Girard sank a free throw to surpass Stephenson's total of 2,946. And he did it with style, going for 44 points, giving him 2,952 career points.
Believe it or not, the 44 matched a season low for Girard, who averages a remarkable 50.1 per game, according to the
dailygazette.com.
Girard's reaction to breaking the record was subdued.
"My parents did a good job and my coaches did a good job, along with my teammates, of making sure that we didn't really talk about it," he told the newspaper. "It's great. But you know what makes it even better is winning."
