SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Chaparral (Scottsdale, Ariz.) basketball players have grown up. And it is showing on the court.

With a strong student section for a noon game Saturday, Chaparral gave Heritage Christian (Northridge, Calif.) its first loss of the season, winning 72-60 with players sharing the ball and rebounding at the American Family Insurance Hoophall West at Chaparral.

Heritage Christian (9-1) had just won its tournament and features California-bound forward Juhwan Harris-Dyson, who had a strong performance with 24 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.

But Chaparral (9-0) got more help.

Senior guard Colten Kresl, despite missing the last three minutes of the third quarter and the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, led Chaparral with 23 points and six assists. He also had six rebounds.

Fellow senior guard J.T. Thoman and 6-7 wing Kai Fletcher both had double-doubles. Thoman had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Fletcher 12 points and 13 rebounds.

“Last year was a struggle,” said Kresl, who is averaging 22 points in this turnaround season. “But this year we have more chemistry.”

Chaparral was 8-19 last year, going 1-7 in region play and losing its last seven to end the season. The Firebirds went 26-6 two years ago, when it lost to Tempe Corona del Sol in the semifinals.

“We’ve matured from last year,” Chaparral coach Dan Peterson said. “We took some lumps and had to figure out how to play together. Guys are trusting each other, and that’s the main thing.”

Peterson trusted his team with leading scorer Kresl on the bench with three fouls for a bulk of the second half, and Chaparral maintained its lead over Heritage Christian.

“Playing in this is great,” Peterson said. “They need to play with pressure. I thought they responded well.”

In other games Saturday:

Perry (Gilbert, Ariz.) defeated Lake Oswego (Oregon) 49-42. Sophomore Jalen Williams was named MVP of game with 13 points, four steals and three assists.

Lake Oswego, which lost Friday night to Basha (Chandler, Ariz.), was led by sophomore guard Josh Angle, who had 11 points, making four of eight shots, including three 3-pointers.

Basha never trailed and led by as much as 18 in a 71-56 rout of Moreau Catholic, as senior guard Terrell Brown came away with MVP honors with 25 points, seven steals, seven assists and five rebounds.

Senior forward Gabe McGlothan, who was MVP of his team’s win Friday against Lake Oswego, added 16 points and 14 rebounds.

“They were are leading scorers from last year and both having better senior years,” coach Mike Grothaus said of Brown and McGlothan.

Basha (11-0) went 2-0 in the Hoophall West.

“We got to challenge ourselves against the best teams in the country,” Grothaus said.

Brown called these two games important, because “it shows we’re one of the best teams in Arizona.”

Kyree  Walker had 26 points and senior point guard Damari Milstead, a Grand Canyon signee, had 20 to lead Moreau.
