Your Perception of Duke

As I am reading comments on the Fab Five/ Grant Hill situation on various sites, I am shocked at how many people so vehemently hate Duke.

They say they are snobbish and Coach K is a prick.

I don't see a snobbish team at all, and if you watch the locker room interviews after every game on http://www.youtube.com/user/dukeblueplanet?blend=1&ob=4 they seem like a pretty fun group and maybe have the best chemistry out of any team I've seen off the court a lot like how the Thunder mesh.

Maybe this is just me being too young to understand how prickish or easily hateable Duke players were back in the 90's, but I truly believe that there is not much to actually "hate" about Duke.

I mean they do everything fairly. And they are choosy about their recruits but can you blame them after so many recruiting coups have been happening in the last couple of years?

I don't know. I just posted this so I can get some feedback on the institution of Duke from an older audience because obviously I am too young to understand this blind hate.

What are your guys opinion on Duke whether you love em or hate em.

No trying to cover up anything BE HONEST.

As a Duke fan, someone needs

As a Duke fan, someone needs to explain to me the hatred of Duke because HONESTLY

I feel people hate Duke because they win with white players.

Once again, I'm 18, so I don't know all the history of Duke, but I never saw a legit reason why they are hated the way they are.

I think they're like the

I think they're like the Notre dame of basketball they're hated because of a mixture of jealousy and the success they have is achieved differently the common misperception that only rich ( mostly white guys) go there combined with a bit of snobbishness

One name explains it all...

Christian Laettner. What a stuck up jerk. Because he was the 'face' of that University during the big shot early 90's I think people still associate that arrogant NBA bust with Coach K. At least I do! But other than him, yeah I agree it is an overblown and too oft repeated stereotype of Dukies. There have been some really good guys from that program, not the least of whom is Grant Hill. Great player, philanthropist and one of the top collectors of African American art in the counrty (world?).

To be honest I respect the

To be honest I respect the Duke program because it’s a small private school that competes every year; however I do hate Duke with a passion. But I hate them because of Dickie V; Dickie V will give them props no matter how bad they are doing during a game or the season. I just hate hearing him say " oh the Dukies or the Dukies baby” or "Coach K, blah, blah, blah" Man I hate that stuff. Growing up I kind of felt like Jalen Rose in thinking they were all soft, and stuck up, but being younger back then I don't know why. The fab five show pretty much summed up why I don’t like Duke, but Dickie V is why I hate Duke.

1. One player creates a perception? Come on now

2. NBA Bust? Look up his numbers.

I think its the same reason

I think its the same reason people hate the Lakers, Yankees, and Cowboys.

The winning caused them to have alot of fair weather fans and they are very obnoxious. Dick Vitale......he just nut rides so hard. At times its like the referees help them win only because they are Duke. Floppers: Laettner,Wojo ,greg paulus.

C'mon BK

Read my entire post before jumping to conclusions. And yes, Laettner did have that effect and yes he was a bust. This guy was one of the many 'next Bird' guys. Just like Keith Van Horn has decent numbers if you JUST LOOK AT THE NUMBERS, but was a bust to anyone who knew, watched, or cared. Thanks. You can stop talking now.

Duke Does It The Right Way

In a sport where it's not uncommon for less than 30% of the starting give to actually graduate from college, Duke has a staggering graduation rate. I don't know the exact numbers, but I believe it's in the mid to upper 90's. They actually recuit legitimate student athletes, guys who go to school but have the ability to play basketball at an elite level.

Someone earlier in this thread made an excellent point, it's jealousy. Forget Christian Laettner, on balance, Duke has graduated some of the classiest guys in the sport. Grant Hill is one of many on that long list of guys that created the tradition of academics, athletics, and character.

Actually think some of you users are very racist

Black people do not determine the worlds perception on a team. Black people make up a very small under 11% of the population. I think majority of people are not wealthy, happen 2 be white and other races, that is where the hatred for duke comes from.Majority of the population is white and hispanic, so if duke is hated how do black people determine that. We do not own the media remotely.Rich White people are not persecuted for having more. Honestly yall should shut up and not speak on race.

I didn't mean...

I didn't mean to single out Laettner as a sole representative of Duke. I was simply explaining what I remember from that time period. rtbt, you are right. There have been classy dudes from there. Dawkins, Hill, et al.

Remember, It's College Basketball

I think some of you need to remember this is COLLEGE basketball, not professional ball. The players are supposed to be STUDENTS. And that's exactly what they are at Duke. It's truly refreshing to see a team stress academics while playing at an elite level.

i dont hate duke bnut i dont

i dont hate duke bnut i dont like them. I dont spend much time thinking about them, but they do have some history of cockiness. Christian leattner was the posterchild for cocky college players. Jay wiliams had a few incidents, once he was pretending to throw the ball at a BC player in the final seconds of a duke blowout win and the BC player blasted him into the scoreres table and pretty much everyone sided with the bc player even coach k who called JWill out. Dahntay jones had those dirty plays on kobe and i just feel like it was something he picked up at duke where guys act tougher then they are. But i havent had anything against them in a long time so im just pretty neutral on them right now.

llperez, What About Gerald Henderson?

LLperez, what about Gerald Henderson's vicious attack against Tyler Hansbrough?

Interesting points above, but on balance, Duke has a long history of character guys like Grant Hill, Shane Battier, Tommy Amaker, Mike Gminiski, Johnny Dawkins, Danny Ferry, etc. And the last time I checked, their graduation rate was in the mid nineties.

The biggest reason to me has

The biggest reason to me has nothing to do with race. Mainly, it is the fact that Dickie V and ESPN never stop talking about them. We get Duke basketball shoved down our throats from November to March every single year. Same can be said about the Cowboys in football....except Duke actually puts a good product on the field.

I don't blame Duke......I blame ESPN for the hate.

Lol if Duke has had a history

Lol if Duke has had a history of having cocky players than I guess you can add Austin Rivers next year. This dude is already talking about destroying Lebron.

Haha well back to the point, I'd have to say that I don't really have a beef with any program. I guess partly because I'm a sports fan first before I'm a Duke fan.

I'll admit it, I love watching UNC play. I'm not ashamed I just love watching good basketball.

The only school that I'm a bit iffy about is Kentucky and Coach Cal, but still he hasn't got caught with doing anything wrong at Kentucky and it isn't fair to say that he cheated in getting his last couple of recruiting classes.

I don't really see the hate on Coach K either. Most of the people who down Krzyzewski (had to look up the spelling on that one) usually just say that he's rat-faced...I mean I'm not the best looking guy on the block but people don't hate me...

I don't know I'm pretty young so I guess I'm just confused by all of this hate for players and programs. I just feel like some fans go too far (including Dukies) and it isn't needed.

From the people i know and

From the people i know and from how i feel it all started with Christian Laettner. dont get me wrong he was good but he was a straight Azz Hole. He was dirty and he would say things that would go over the line (not racist). the last straw was when he stepped on Richard Dents chest after a foul. And then the fact that they were winning just fueled the hatred. There players used to be very cocky as well. I'm not too sure about now but Bobby Hurley, Thomas Hill, Cherokee parks, Meeks, Jason Williams.

Cherokee

is super super fat. The last time I saw (at a local watering hole) he was fat, drunk, tats were stretched and his bar was failing. "Winning!"
