This shows up many threads, people like to comment on the Sixers.  That team allows us to imagine different scenarios and how to manage the team for the future.  Regardless of your loyalties, how would you approach the draft this year as a Sixers fan.  Let’s assume Oak, Embiid, Noel, and Saric will all be available at the start of next year.  What are you doing?  Who are you trading?  What would be your approach with the assumption of 2 top 5 picks, and why?  I like to learn from this site ball knowledge, with the spacing arguments etc.  So I’m genuinely asking…what would you do?!

As long as one of these picks is Simmons then its a winning draft. The core would be Simmons, Noel, Okafor, Embiid, Saric. That is a solid core considering two of these guys would have to come off the bench. The rest of the players on the team need to be shooters. Jamaal Murray has a nice game that would pair with Simmons. Only guys I keep besides these players are Grant and maybe Covington or Wroten if he tears it up upon his return. I like McConnell in the JJ Barea,Matty Delavedova role.

& I have never seen a Worse group of players…. I really like Okafor & Noel but they don’t seem committed to developing their ability to play together….

Their group of guards & forwards just do whatever they want… Okafor is almost unstoppable in the post, so you would think they would at least work the ball into the post & then run plays from there b/c Okafor gets doubled & even tripled but they Never do it that consistently….

The coach seems to have zero control over the team & players like Isaiah Canaan, Jakar Sampson, Hollis Thomas & Robert Covington just do whatever they feel like doing…. I would Not keep a single player from this team other than Noel, Okafor & Grant….

It’s one of the worst situations I have Ever seen & if I was a Phila fan I would Seriously worry that Noel & Okafor will demand to be traded….

They could Very possibly have 4 First round picks next June…. As you mentioned they are hoping to have Embiid, Saric, Okafor & Noel next Fall…. Obviously they take Simmons if they have the #1 pick…. but if they don’t get Simmons, they should take Jamal Murray & just give Murray the reigns to that team….

Draft PG, SG or SF w/ their other picks & let those 8 players play together in 2016 & 2017 and just see what type of team you have – let the talent play itself out & then you can think about trading 1 or 2 of those guys so you can fill needs….

These will ALL be top prospects so they will have Value & Hinkie has Loaded them w/ First round picks in 2017, 2018 & 2019 as well…. so this should be the last year of this Nightmare for Sixers fans….

If they have picks at 1 and 5 like they are projected to have now, I would look at moving Saric and 5 to move up to 2.  I would even think about moving Embiid in a package deal.  Although, 5, 19, and Saric might be enough to get you to number 2.

Get Ben Simmons and Skal then you have a front line of Simmons, Skal, and Okafor with Nerlens Noel off the bench.

Oak can post up, Simmons can create, and Skal can shoot and score.

Use picks at 19 and 25 on wing players.

Unless there is a Top Tier shooting guard on the board, then you try to end up with Simmons and that shooting guard.  If you have to trade up to get the Top Tier shooting guard (and if you think Skal isn’t worth the hype, then trade up to get him).

So, I would draft Ben Simmons number 1.  Trade 5, 25, Saric, and Embiid for the 2nd pick to draft Skal, and hopefully other assets.  Then trade 19, 40, and a future 2nd round pick to move up a bit higher in the first round to get a scoring 2 guard like Buddy Hield.

I would trade Embiid and Saric, who are nothing more than theoretical assets at this point, to lock in their value.

I agree I would also trade Embid. They way its suspected he didn’t rehab right and caused the need for another surgery. I don’t think he is listening to Sixers brass or maybe he jsut needs a fresh start after all this hes gone through. Plus he made a comment when they drafted Oak when he knew he couldn’t even play this year anyway. Might be able to trade Embid and 5 to move up to 2 or 3. Some team might want to take a chance Embid pans out. But I would take one of the other guys Murray first, then Ingram, then Brown. They need some guard help. Oakand Noel can play huge minutes in the front court. Ingram might be able to play a long SG like Middelton.

The Sixers, along with the Timberwolves (by accident), are the two most intruiging teams in the league.  The reason is because it allows all of us to become GM’s.  They are two examples of teams building through the draft.  The last time this happened, was OKC, and then they blew it by trading Harden.

The big what if was that Harden trade.  Imagine OKC going forward with Westbrook, Harden, Durant, Ibaka.  You’d have to think they would’ve won a ‘chip.

So with the Wolves, we can all dream about LaVine, Wiggins, and Towns.

With Philly, they haven’t had the luck that the Wolves had in the draft, but they have 3 nice pieces with Noel, Embiid and Okafor.  I think it’s a must to draft a PG, and Ben Simmons, with their 2 top 5 picks (assuming they get the Lakers pick).

Ben Simmons is ideal for this team.  He can play the 3, and help to pass the ball and set up the big men.  By doing this, he can take pressure off the PG.  Also, he can help find Stauskas on the wing, who can develop into a Klay Thompson type player IMO.

As for the PG of their future, Jamal Murray is the obvious pick, though keep an eye on Kris Dunn, Demetrius Jackson, or Melo Trimble. (with their pick around ~20).

GM Input, I thought it soudned like the name of a new car.

The 76ers, it probably isn’t difficult, the answer is, of course, guards.

If they draft another center, just because they are best player available, it will be crazy.  Guards who can shoot, that is important.  If they do get Simmons with their own pick, and also have the Lakers’ pick, then a guard who can pass isn’t really important as Simmons, and even Saric, can run the offense.

Maybe they are called the 76ers because they have had 76 draft picks in the last few years.

Embiid is healthy and a BEAST. They trade Noel or Saric for a guy like Schroder.

Well, watching my sixers lately has been tough.  We all get the multi-year rebuilding strategy that Philly has supposedly adopted.  Basically everyone and everything not nailed to the floor except for Noel, Embid, Okafor, and Saric, is trade bait for getting more 1st round picks in the future.

The team now looks exactly like Hinkie was telling fans it would like: a few top draft picks doing okay stat-wise, and a whole bunch of 3rd tier players who will be unceremoniously dumped after next year’s NBA draft when the next reshuffle occurs and the sixers get their next top draft pick or picks.

The problem I see with this strategy is that if their draft picks don’t pan out like Embiid for example, then the strategy fails and the team has wasted years of building and has years more ahead to rebuild from the rebuilding phase.  Another problem is that Noel will be a restricted free agent in 2017.  You can bet that next summer his agent is going to ask for a long-term max money contract.  Then the next year Embiid, then Saric, then Okafor, then the next top draft pick etc…  By the time Hinkie’s strategy hopefully starts to work, the team will be faced with giving out multiple max contracts or lose the very players that are the core of the strategy.  Will Philly ownership be willing to pay luxury tax for these players?  Especially the injury prone Embiid who the sixers are paying an average of 4.6 mill right now for zero minutes.  And what if Noel is sick of losing after 3 years of it, and doesn’t even want to resign with Philly?

Guys like TJ McConnell, Christian Wood, Jakarr Sampson, Robert Covington, Phil Pressey, and Hollis Thompson are not going to carry the team to a deep playoff run.  6 roster spots are guys who were not even drafted.  4 more players were 2nd rounders.

I think Hinkie’s strategy is ill-conceived.  I understand drafting your way to a better team, but just trying to get a top 5 draft pick every year at the expense of everyone else ont he team means that Hinkie has to hit a home run every year with that top pick.  Already he struck out with Embiid, and Saric may or may not even play next year.

OK, rant over.  To answer the OP’s question I would keep Noel, Okafor, and trade Embiid, Saric, and everyone else on the team for a quality point guard, and a couple of quality wings.  Over the next couple of years I would draft for need and fill out the roster with some very good players, and forget trying to get the best player available.  Drafting the BPA every year is not going to work.  Simply look at the 2013 draft: MCW drafted over the Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kelly Olynyk, and then traded away anyway?  Ugh!.

Well someone has got to be traded. Embiid and Saric haven’t played a minute in the league an are unknown quantities, so trading them doesn’t make much sense. Their value is just too low without having seen them on the court.

So it comes down to Oakafor or Noel. I trade either one to the Celtics for the Nets unprotected 2018 1st rounder and a 2nd round pick or a legitimate NBA guard. (Tony Wroten is the only legit guard currently on the roster and he’s no more than a good backup) Or a similar type deal to the Mavs.

This year’s draft 2 top 5 picks. I think Simmons and Bender are the difference makers while Murray and Brown are at worse solid starters for many years. So any combination of those 2 pairs of players I’m happy with. With the Heat and Thunder 1st round picks it’s all about the backcourt. Dunn will be gone before either pick so some guards that I like are: Jackson, Levert, Bacon, Briscoe, Wallace and George De Paulo.

In a perfect world we trade either Oakafor or Noel; draft Simmons, Bender, Jackson/Briscoe and Bacon/Levert. Bender stays overseas for 2 years just like Saric so next years starting lineup looks like this:

    C: Oakafor/Noel

    F’s: Simmons and Saric

    SG: Bacon/Levert

    PG: Jackson/Briscoe

Backups: Embiid, Grant, Wroten and Covington.

The rest of the current roster is pretty insignificunt (#boondocksaints), their all replaceable.

2016 is one last year as a lotto stud (#nextfriday), then your scratching for the playoffs in 2017. 2018 you add Bender and two 1st round picks to a team that hopefully just made or worst case just missed the playoffs. Plus any veteran FA help we sign over the next couple years.

This doesn’t seem inconceivable (#princessbride)to me. If you want to tell me whom we trade Oakafor, Noel or neither or who you like in the draft please do. Just be specific about what could never happen in the above plan.
