You Know the College Game is Weak When JEFF WITHEY Gets This Much Hype
I mean, c'mon! Yes, he is a very talented player. yes, he is among the nation's very best college Centers. But to put him up there with Zeller and McDermott? Really? He was hardly an elite player before last year's tournament where, granted, he was one of the best players. But he's...just...not that skilled! I dunno, it may just be me, but I don't think he can do that much besides block shots. He's not a great scorer. He's not very athletic. And I don't think he can carry his team that far without, say, Thomas Robinson at his side. Anyone agree? Anyone?
Yup, 100%. He's a very good college center, who excels due to excellent length, being a great defender and arguably being the nations top shot-blocker. But he's not a guy who is going to carry an offense when they are shooting cold from the field, and he's not a guy you can go-to every time in the post and expect him to win his match up and bail the team out. He's a great guy to have on the team, just not when he's your #1 option.
are you kidding? I think he is rated right where he should be, He had an uncountable amount of blocks in last years ncaa tourney. and your saying how can they put him up there with zeller and mcdermott? zeller IMO is 1 of the most overated players in the college game
Just to expand on that, Withey had a higher block rate last year than Anthony Davis. He's a game changing defender at the college level.
I don't hear any hype about Withey. He is what he is, a shot blocker with decent touch. Nothing more.
Ben McLemore on the other hand is the f'ing truth. Dude has star potential.
He's probably one of the most recognizable names in college basketball right now, so obviously he must have some hype. Agree on McLemore, he's exceptionally talented.
ben mclemore to me is like a very very rich mans brandon rush with a more refined J
really been impress with him, guy look legit, could give Shabazz fits for the best SG prospect in the nation, remind me Jerry Stackhouse..
The guy was the Big 12 defensive player of the year last season. He's probably the premeire defensive big man, in the college game. He's started off strong dropping 12 ppg 10 rpg and 4.3 bpg in his first 3 games. No one is calling him a lottery pick, he's a specialist at the next level, but that won't and shouldn't hurt the accolades he'll accumulate as a college player.
I really think he can average more than 4 blocks per game, in a major conference, for a ranked team, over the course of the season. No, he's not a lotto pick, nor a 20 ppg scorer at the college level, but he flat out changes games at the NCAA level, and if he sneaks on an All-American team or the Naismith watch, it's because he's that good at what he does best. Block and alter shots, discourage players from driving, and grab rebounds.
He blocks shots. If he can rebound like this all season, then he's pretty darn close to good enough for me as a Center. Though in terms of him getting to the next level, it would have been nice if he had rebounded a little better a little earlier in his college career.
I think his name is recognizable in part because it is easy to remember. "The big white guy? Yeah the one named white-ie, sure I remember who that guy is." Simple name and easy to remember game.
in response to kobyz, man i hope he does give bazz a run for top SG but i think bazz about to kill it, should be interesting!
Withey is the best player in the country 12 blocks last night
His line was 16 points 12 rebounds 12 blocks.
It was a truly dominant performance. He probably blocked or altered over 20 shots, and despite not being a very good team, San Jose State's front line was 6'11'', 7'1'', 6'9'' and 6'7'' 260lbs.
Is this guy really going to go 2nd round? could be a huge steal. I think only 7-8 guys I would take over him and most because of upside he is about as NBA ready as anyone
I see a bit of the Birdman - Chris Anderson in Jeff Withey.
I think at the pro level, he will be a part time starter. 6-10ppg, 6/7 reb, good shot blocker. Just like the Birdman....
I think you're underestimating his athletic ability. He doesn't have much offensive game, but he is fairly mobile and is a very good two-footed leaper for someone his size. That said, he is a mid-second round pick that will stick around in the league for a while IMO.
No way is he a mid 2nd rounder in this draft.
We are in an era in the NBA where there aren't many 7 foot shot blocking centers and dude is averaging 5.6 blocks so far and even had a 12 block game this year. I hope you're not impying that he's over hyped, because so far his play has rightfully put him in the POY talk.
