Would you consider dirk to be the best player in the world?
would you consider dirk to be the best player in the world?
i was thinking about this and if someone asked to choose one player in order to win a championship i think i would choose Dirk
i know its the dallas team that is good but throughout these whole playoffs Dirk seems be shining the most.
Dirk is playing great..but he's not among the top 5 players in the World...Top 10 YES....
Remember people said the same thing about McGrady and Iverson when they were having great years...
Dirk is comfortable now..playing in system, that plays to his strength and knows his weaknesses...
I Agree with you alot.
But you are wrong. Dirk is the number 1 player in the world right now. And I say this as a true Heat fan. He has impressed me profoundly.
10. Joe Johnson
Calm down now. Dirk is making a strong case as the best "offensive" player in the NBA. Best player overall is a bit of a stretch.
And this is coming from a Dirk fan and a hardcore Mavs' fan.
Dirk is PLAYING better than Anyone Right Now..
Yes, that is TRUE..
But no way is he the best player in the world...There is A DIFFERENCE...Thats like saying Jason Terry is the 3rd best player in the world...becuz after Dirk and Wade he's been the 3rd best player in these finals...
Miami's coach screwed up,by deciding not to double team him...If he played in the 80's ,guys like Maurice Lucas,Rick MaHorn,Rodman would've gotten into his head...
No, he is not the best player in the world. He is playing great right now though, and is easily outplaying Lebron, but he's still not the best player in the world. But you can make a argument for him as a top 5 player.
@canesboy6 Howard, Wade, and Dirk are better than lebron? But far more importantly, Joe Johnson is in the top ten? wow.
@ I in win, are you watching the finals? Im a Heat fan, and I've seen every second of the playoffs. If you think Lebron is a better player right now than Wade, your an idiot. No two ways around it, physically and mentally Lebron defers to Wade. Wade is the superior player. Id take Howard over Lebron too right now. Dunno if he is doing to many commericials, or is just feeling the pressure, but Leron isnt playing up to his calibur right now. Joe Johnson is the 10th best player to me right now. I think he is just barely better than Carmelo and Deron Williams, but keep in mind, this is Right now. Johnson is older than those guys.
I gotta agree with canesboy6
i gotta say Dirk is the best player in the world right now (dont consider the future or potential or age or longterm issues)
if i was told to pick one player (forget the rest of of the team) i would choose Dirk as i feel that he would give my team the best chance of winning (yes over wade or Lebron (one))
thus i could conclude that Dirk is the best player in the world since i wouldnt choose any one individual player over him ( i think many people feel this way)
i know these things change as different players shine at different times but as Jeff Van Gundy says Dirk is gonna be a household name after the playoffs are done just like kobe, lebron (it would help if he wins a championship)
at this very specific moment yes
he is playing the best Basketball in the playoffs
He may or not be the best player in the NBA but he is America's favorite athlete. . .No Tiger or LBJ for obvious reasons, Kobe just got swept, NFL is going into lockout, Pujols has had a bad season. . . and there is Dirk, the definitive leader of a team of "nobodys" leading a championship series. If you look at this team, you can't tell me they aren't one of the worst teams on paper to come out of the West in a looooong time. He is battling the most hated team in all of sports right now. He, German or not, is the Captain America of the NBA. . .
I don't think Dirk is the best in the world, and I think the reason for his success has been Tyson Chandler anchoring the D. Without a defensive stopper at the 5 Dirk wouldn't be making it this far. People need to understand the Mavericks are a very deep, well-coached team and Dirk doesn't dominate the play as much as you'd expect the best player in the world to. He's the best player on the team playing the best right now, but it doesn't mean he's the best player in the world, just that the Mavericks have a lot of solid players and Dirk is playing within himself.
Oh, and Howard is not the third best player in the NBA, he got beaten in the first round by the Hawks, whose C is a 4 playing out of position. Honestly, people need to get over name recognition with Howard and his defensive prowess and admit than as an overall player he isn't on the same level yet as even Chris Paul. This is just my opinion of course, but Howard just strikes me as overhyped because he's the only C doing anything in the NBA right now.
I agree with Canesboy6, and his list is very similar to mine...
Dirk and Wade are 1a, 1b right now.
And for people saying that he's not the best because of his defense...His defense hasn't been bad and he's near double digits every night in rebounds.
And I could make the argument that he's absolutely the best offensive player in the NBA right now...One-on-one Dirk has proven to be unstopable, the only way to stop him is to hope he misses.
Dirk is playing out of his mind but hes not tha best in the World. That honor still belongs to Kobe (victim of his teamates play this season)
Dirk is by far the best shooter in the world. Without a doubt. He can score from anywhere on the floor. As far as the best of the world, you have to be able to do everything, and as far as Dirk goes, he doesn't play very good defense at all. Even though I don't like LeBron, and he has done terrible in the Finals, he is the best player in the world because of his ability to score from all angles and positions, his extremely good passing ability for a score-first forward, and his ability to bring down rebounds. He also is a very good shot-blocker and everytime he gets a steal it's always 2 points the other way. He's an All-around great player. He is the best, as much as it hurts to say.
when did anyone ever say mcgrady was the best player in the world......
Lebron can't score from all angles and positions, I think you're thinking of Dwyane Wade. I honestly think Wade is the best player in the game right now. Outstanding defender, effortless scorer, gifted passer and not afraid of the moment, not really much more you could want. Dirk has only scoring and clutchness, and Lebron has everything except being clutch.
I'm afraid Wade wins out straight up in my mind.
Dirk is my favorite player but he is not the best. He didnt get enough MVP credit. If he and Butler would have stayed healthy the Mavs would have had the best record and he would have had his second 50-40-90 season. Just hope that people finally agree that he is the best PF on the planet so I think you could consider him a top 5 player since he is the best on his position. But come one.
Lebron, Wade, Kobe, Howard are better because they are more consistent on both ends.
Stop saying Wade is better than Lebron. Against Chicago everyone was on LBJs dick, now 5 games later people are on Wades dick. Ist just ridiculous how fast people change their minds.
"But Lebron does not show up when it mattered!"
So it didn't matter when he willed the Heat over Boston and Chicago. When he destoyed the MVP?
Chicago made one major mistake. They were stupid enough to think that Deng could contain LBJ alone and got their asses kicked. He hit from all angles, it just looks like you guys don't even watch the games.
The Mavs made adjustments. Everytime Lebron is in a good position to score (elbow) another Mavs player comes over to double team him. No player in the world is able to score 40 points if he gets double teamed everytime he is in a good position. That opened things up for Wade and all the other role players who shoot the ball extremely well, like Chalmers who would not play a single minute for most playoff teams.
"But Lebron is so not clutch".
I will not start again about Boston and Chicago where he hit clutch three after three. Yes, he lacked aggressiveness against the Mavs and was obivously out of rhythm I think mostly because he didnt get the ticky tack calls he usually got. But he made great passes because again, most focus was on him. His defense on Marion was also solid, especially in the post. Marion just hit shots! They were all contested.
Did he recently become a Bill Russell type defender? No? Okay, then NO. Quit overreacting.
@Canesboy, i liked your list till you decided to put Joe Johnson in your top 10, then i literally face palmed.
I don't like this misconception that Lebron beat Boston. I'm a Boston fan, and while Lebron hit some surprising 3s which could be considered "daggers", they were never with the Heat in danger of losing that lead, and Wade was absolutely dominant in that series, he was simply unstoppable, and let's not forget the D he played against Ray Allen to boot. Lebron plays great when things are going well, but in moments of adversity, time and again he crumbles because he's weak mentally. It happened against Orlando two years ago, and it happened against the Celtics last season. Guess what, it's happening again.
Against Chicago, he had a pretty sloppy series, but he was clearly taking the back seat to Lebron and Bosh which was a strategic move to preserve him for the Finals and use that Big 3 advantage.
On the subject of being clutch, I want to point out not just Wade's scoring, but clutch defending; the dude made a number of big plays to prevent easy buckets by various Mavs players and his team D was simply amazing.
People need to get over name recognition and the hype and realise that Wade is simply a better player than Lebron, Lebron just has better physical tools with his size, strength and quickness.
I've heard of "living in the moment", but come on now...
At seven feet tall with the offensive skill set he has, I do think he's undefendable... Especially now that he's added a legit low post game and developed mental toughness. Once he gets the ball in his spots, it's pretty much a wrap. And you can't foul him and put him on the line... It's a wrap from there too. IF you double him, he'll make the right pass.
Has he made a case for being the best offensive player in the world? Possibly. Best player in the world though? I don't think so.
He's top five though and I will say he's the best power forward in the world.
I'd say he is not the best, but he is top 5. No offense to Jason Terry, but this Mavs team has no other great scorer or creator. He has really carried this Mavs team and made it elite offensively.
I don't think that Dirk is really playing differently now than in the past. He always has dominated in the 4th quarter, he has always raised his game in the playoffs, and has been a versatile scorer for a long time. Two years ago, he put up even superior numbers in the playoffs. Now he just has better team mates, and the Mavs now have a definitive 2nd best player in Chandler, who has had an absolutely outstanding Finals.
This year's Dirk is differently mentally. He's playing with an "I won't be denied" attitude.
He's more aggressive in the low post and when it comes to getting to the free-throw line. I don't sense any fear or hesitation when I watch him play now. He's decisive and confident... Like he all of the sudden just gained killer.
LMAO..No Way is Dirk America's favorite athlete!!! Come on NOW!!
Outside of the basketball followers in the world..Nobody knows Dirk...
Some teenagers on here just started watching basketball and dont know the game..
dirks a monster and he is showing no signs of slowing down, the way he is playing in the 4th quarter and the leadership he has been showing in these playoffs he has to be at least concidered for the top spot
Dirk isn't America's favorite athlete, but I do think he's becoming a household name.
I was at the Y the other day and saw a group of kids playing ball. They were shooting fadeaways off of one leg yelling, "Dirk!"
I thought that was kind of funny lol. You usually hear "MJ!", "Kobe!" or "D. Rose!".
I think Dirk playing well on this stage is going to do wonders for his recognition.
Without a doubt he's top 5. Most people should have known that at least by the end of the season. Offensively, I think he is the best player in the league because he can score from anywhere on the floor, he's extremely efficient and he can get his without destroying his teammates offensive flow. People say that his team is deep, but I don't think they are anywhere near what they were. Plus you can only play 5 at a time. They lost their backup center that could start on most teams, lost two starters and one of the guys that became a contributer (Peja) remembered he played for one of the choke squads in Sacramento and disappeared. So although you still have some nic players you end up playing with a 38 year old pg, your 2nd best player is a undersized 2 guard, and your backup center is pretty much a patch of two guys you really don't want to play, especially in this series. There are a lot of guys that couldn't carry this same team to this spot. Even though he's not a great defender he has improved a lot and is a competent one that occassionally comes up with big plays on that end. Nothing to get exciting about, but some of the more talented and way more athletic guys in the league put absolutely no effort on that side of the ball.
As far as top 5 guys it's hard for me to pick an order. I think Wade is the best player in the league. I have had him right behind Kobe for some time. He won a championship just a few years ago in a similiar situation as Dirk, because Wade went MJ on them. It's hard to win a championship being the lone superstar. As hard as Dirk has been to contain, Wade has been better. He's been scoring at a crazy clip and making big play after play on both ends of the court.
#2 Howard controls the game with his rebounding and defense. Look at what he has. That team should have been much worst. By the same token, with the types of players he plays against every night and lack of centers in the league it makes you wonder if he should be much better.
#3 Dirk. Read above.
#4 Kobe. He moves down on my list because he's not the same player and he needs more help. I keep him ahead of Lebron, because I have faith that at the end of a game he's going to come through.
#5 Lebron. The most difficult guy to peg. Some nights he shows you he is the best, just not every night. Easily the most talented player in the league, but I'm not sure I have ever seen a guy with his IQ and ability take so many shots that can kill a team or make so many bad turnovers in key parts of games. With all of his flaws, how many people can say that a bad game by them was a triple double?
#6 CP3. Makes everyone better. Fearless.
#7 Durant. Seems to not always be as aggressive as he should be. Amazing scorer, but seems to have issues with physical defenders. Refuses to post up:(
#8 Rose. See Lebron, then take away 5-6 inches, 70-80 pounds, and add in fearless at all times and accountibility.
Name an athlete that is more liked right now? Everyone is pulling for Dirk. . .sure he may not be the favorite athlete of people that are really into sports, but I hate to tell you guys, you aren't the majority of the country. There are a lot of casual observers that are into Dirk right now, they don't care about your favorite guy from your favorite team, they don't care about Dwight Howard or Derrick Rose or Kevin Durant.
People don't know who Dirk is? ? SMH! Villains and heroes are what this country is all about, people who don't like sports hate the Heat because of what they represent. Dirk becomes the hero. You say I'm wrong, so tell me who is more popular right now.
People hate him but he was still #1 in jerseys sold. You think people are watching the Finals because of Dirk? You think game 5 was the most watched NBA game in recent history because of Dirk?
No. People love this villain Miami team. They love the villain LeBron. No matter how much they say they hate him, they still tune in to see how he does. Whether he fails or not.
So you tell me this...
Why does every magazine cover have LeBron? Why does every newspaper after every finals game have LeBron? Why do they talk about LeBron on PTI, 1st and 10, television sports talk shows and radio sports talk shows? Why did the video of LeBron and Wade coughing air more often than Dirk highlights did on every major sports network? Why are there no Dirk shoes? Why is James still the most talked about athlete even though he's struggling?
You don't have to like him.. but you HAVE to watch him and you HAVE to talk about him.
LBJ is the most hated so he is everyone's favorite? ? That doesn't make sense. People are tuning it to watch him lose.
How many people watched the OJ trial? Did that mean he was a favorite person? How many people tune in to stuff about Bin Laden? Favorite person? I am not comparing the impact of LBJ and Bin Laden, my point is you are saying people hate LeBron but really they love him because they watch. . .it's more that they hate LeBron, but they need something to hate or love to care/watch
But like I said. People tune in to watch LeBron.
When the Miami Heat lose, nobody says "Well, Nowitzki beat Miami". They say "LeBron choked"
Hate him or love him, he's the most talked about and the most popular athlete in today's world of sports.
Popular doesn't necessarily mean he's loved, it's just that everybody knows him and everybody talked about him.
And that's exactly why a thread that was meant for Dirk is now a thread talking about LeBron.
You're confusing popular for favorite. . .BIG difference. And you bringing up a player then suggesting he was brought up because he is America's favorite player is the worst argument in the history of debates
I never said he was America's favorite player. Where did I type the word favorite?
. . . In a rsponse to a post questioning me saying Dirks was America's favorite player right now I said name an athlete that is more liked than Dirk, you said LBJ. . .
No, this is what you said.
"so tell me who is more popular right now"
Posted on: Sun, 06/12/2011 - 2:46pm
Take a look at the post.
You're right, there is also the first question, of the post, which is how I should have ended it at the end as well. That was my bad. My debate was on how much he was liked, not his popularity, def my mistake to word it the way I did.
Okay, well if you would have worded it by saying "Who is America's favorite player right now" then yes, I do agree it is Dirk. Simply because he is beating the villains.
So in that case, I agree.
Everything else I had said prior to that was about being a "favorite" so that's where I was continuing to go with it. You picked up on the popular part which I didn't even realize I wrote, and I def won't disagree with you there.
Yeah my first post in this thread: He may or not be the best player in the NBA but he is America's favorite athlete. . .No Tiger or LBJ for obvious reasons, Kobe just got swept, NFL is going into lockout, Pujols has had a bad season. . . and there is Dirk, the definitive leader of a team of "nobodys" leading a championship series. If you look at this team, you can't tell me they aren't one of the worst teams on paper to come out of the West in a looooong time. He is battling the most hated team in all of sports right now. He, German or not, is the Captain America of the NBA. . .
Yeah, I should have read the entire thread. My apologies for jumping at the last phrase.
Dirk is very good but he's not better than he has been the past couple of years. The only difference is more people are getting to see him and he's winning(thaks to having a better team than in the past)
