I know a lot of things are being floated around the league right now concerning where Dwight Howard goes, but something just came to mind. The Mavs right now are obviously striking out in free agency and are down to Ramon Sessions and Aaron Brooks as free agent options. The other things the Mavs have is a ton of cap flexibility. So what I was wondering is whether or not the Mavs would be willing to take on a bunch of bad contracts to acquire Howard.
If Howard was willing to re-sign with the Mavs would they take Hedo Turkoglu and maybe Jason Richardson's inflated contracts to get the deal done. The Magic would like to clear bad contracts and the Mavs have cap space, so it's just a thought. The Mavs could trade Beaubois, some other players and a ton of draft picks.
Against WHAT ....? brendan wright and brendan haywood ?...
The Magic want some building blocks in return and the Mavs have none to offer except non lottery first round picks which I'm sure isn't enough to entice the Magic. Unless the Mavs somehow acquire some interesting pieces, this deal is not going to happen.
Maybe for a promise to tank and a top draft pick. Dallas doesn't have enough young assets to make it interesting for Orlando.
Dwight, Turk, Richardson and Reddick thats 42 million, and 42 million is worth contemplating. No matter what assets and youth the Magic get they cant amnesty or trade anyone they have now and will be paying Turk 11 a season for 3 more years. Reddick 7 a season for 2 years and Richardson 5-6 for 4 years. So if they get Marshon Brooks they have two shooting guards already making a combined 13 million for at least two years, that nobody will trade for. H3ll throw is Duhon too he is signed for 3 years at 3 million. Thats doesnt sound bad but thats the going rate for Jason Kidd. Are these young assets going to start over Glen Davis at the 4 who is signed for 4 years 6+ million. If your forced to keep Turk they cant start at the 3,2 or 4. And word is they resigned Jameer Nelson. So the 1 also. The only starting spot not locked up for the next 2 to 4 years is center. Good luck finding one of those, your losing one of the only 6 or so that been around the last 15 years. Maybe a amnestied Haywood.
Dwight doesn't want to play for Dallas. His short list is #1. New Jersey Nets. #2. Play out the season and become un-restricted.
So....you're saying Dallas will take on the junk contracts of Turk, Richardson, Reddick in addition ot the junk contract of Haywood when they can only amnesty one? Who are they giving up for this? Cuban is smart enough not to cripple his future free agent moves by taking all of Orlando's unwanted contracts in order to get Howard who doesn't want to play in Dallas in the first place.
He cant go to the Nets next year as a unrestricted free agent. Their will at least be a sign and trade by some team. The Nets have DWill and JoeJ at 20 a piece. Wallace at 10 plus everyone else. Thats 50 million gone in three guys out of 60 million. What is he going to do go play for the veteran minimun for two years so they can get his rights and excced for him. No matter what Addidas pays him he will not do that. Cuban could get his screws in him and then even sign and trade ( I know he wouldnt do it out of pride) him for all those young assets the Nets have ( Marshon Brooks and like 4 picks destined to be 24 and up).
So what if he wants to go there, Chris Paul wants to go to the Knicks and we see how well thats working out.
I would love if he plays out the year and some team with loads of cap space signs him to a max deal and ships him to the Nets. It would be great for basketball (outside Orlando) and some savy GM could pick and choose what assest from the Nets thay want and rebuild in a day. I can imagine Chris Grant getting a reasonably priced Lopez, Brooks and Gerwald Wallace for a Dwight sign and trade.
The thing about sending him to Brooklyn now is that Lopez and Humpries get to name their own price. Why would Orlando want to commit to them for 3 to 4 years at 8-10 million a year. Especially if Big Baby is already making borderline starter money. Only way is if some team wants vets and can take some of these average veteran players off either of these teams in a three way deal. the problem with all these guys in the deal except Dwight and Brooks, is they make either what their worth or more, whats the value in that.
If Im the Magics, I'll let Dwight sit for the season until the trade deadline. Use his back as the excuse. This will almost gurantee a lottery pick for them. Then leading up to the trade deadline, move him to Jersey for Lopez and Brooks and unprotected pick or to Houston for their pick unprotected and the Toronto top 3 protected pick they got for Lowry, plus players (thats if Houston is still willing to rent Howard). The thing in other teams' favor, is that Jersey will resign Lopez and will be unable to outright sign Howard. His options then will come down to a few teams like Dallas, Atl, and resigning with whomever he is dealt to. He may have no choice but to resign to the team that gets him if they are a decent team because Dallas and Atl as it stands doesnt offer much.
Ill love for him to come to Atl, but I doubt they can put the right pieces around him.
at the trading deadline, unless lopez is a almost max player and who would want him then. waiting to trade d12 at the deadline does ensure that the pick you are getting back is a little better.
What would Orlando get?
Bynum for Howard. It seems to be the only sensible move for the Magic. Unless they want to do the Nets trade.
