Would Having Non-Guaranteed Contracts Help The League's PR Image?
I was talking about this the other day with someone about whether or not having non-guaranteed contracts might help the NBA's image. The NBA is America's 3rd most popular sport and I think a lot of that has to do with the way people see the players. Obviously some of that is race related, the NBA is a league where about 85% of the players are african american and I believe that there is a subset of people in the USA that really bothers even though they wouldn't say so publicly. There really isn't anything that can be done about if people are racist they are pretty much going to be racist you're not going to rationalise them out of that because it isn't rational in the first place.
From a PR standpoint the NBA has the worst salary structure of any of the major three sports teams. First off the NBA is like the NFL in that rookies have the ability to make a lot of money before they have proven anything at the professional level. The NFL allows players to have an even bigger salary however a percentage of that salary can be dumped in the player is a bust. In MLB players need to work through the arbitration process for years before getting a chance at free agency so you have a good idea of what the player is worth.
In the NBA if you make a mistake it is almost impossible to recover from until the team is able to shed the salary. If you've got Gilbert Arenas on your team pulling down 45% of the team salary cap and there is no way you can pull that person off your books that is going to create a lot of anomosity towards the players because that happens a decent amount in the NBA; get ready for Joe Johnson's contract near the end. In the NFL only part of that salary would be guaranteed so it wouldn't kill your teams ability to make improvements, you could cut the player and move on. In the MLB there isn't really a salary cap so you can make a couple mistakes if you have the revenue.
I'm not saying any of this is really right or wrong but I'm saying from a PR standpoint having guaranteed contracts that have the ability to cost your team 40% or more of your team's salary cap can bring a lot of animosity from the fans when the player doesn't live up to the contract. This happens a lot and it seems baseball and football both have a better way of dealing with this issue than the NBA does.
I'm just going to disregard your entire first paragraph..
How does the guy have 3 points already? Its been 5 mintes, and this thread only has 10 views, not to mention how frickin long it would take to read that.
I didn't write this to highlight the race issue but I do think that is a part of why the NBA isn't as popular as the other two major sports in the USA. I just felt for completness I would put that in there because I like that plays a role in how the players are seen, but I more wanted to see what people thought about the guaranteed contracts. And not whether they are right or wrong but how they help or hurt the league from a PR standpoint.
Nevermind, this was a good read, but I don't think race has anything to do with it.
"I do think that is a part of why the NBA isn't as popular as the other two major sports in the USA"
The NBA is not as popular because 85% of the league are African-Americans? You are completely laughable... I love basketball but it will never be on the same level as baseball and football, simply because of the historical ties both sports have with the country. Football is America's sport and baseball is Amerca's past-time.
I don't care if there are 450 Vanilla Ice's in the NBA, it will never be more popular than the other two big sports... And it's NOT because of race.
Fact- The NBA has highest average salary per player
Guess which league is 2nd?
The INDIAN Premier League!(More commonly known as the IPL.)
Yeah, nice post, but race irrelevant.
How is race irrelevant in this thread? He's basically saying that NBA players should have non-guaranteed contracts because they make too much money and American's do not like to see African-American's succeed monetarily.
Well, what I meant was, that the race part of his post didn't make any sense.
Tongue-Out-Like-23 I didn't say anything about you personally, I like the NBA and I actually like the NBA more than MLB or NFL, I actually don't like the NFL at all but am a MLB fan. That being said from my point of view it does play a role, if you think race plays no role whatsoever in what goes on anywhere that is a nieve viewpoint to take. I also could be wrong who knows that is just my view point. I guess I'm lucky I am a person of little consequence because I'd be on Tongue-Out-Like-23's race neurtal enemy list. LOL
bad idea to bring up anything race related. I was trying to say the NBA players aren't viewed as favorably by the public as the other two major sports leagues. I was trying to see if people thought the salary situation had anything to do with that. I get it though race, religion, politics terrible topics to bring up in a forum.
I believe race and the salary part of that are two different situations, and are not really related at all.
But yes, even if you were to bring up somthing similar to this that was true, you would still get negative feedback because of it involving race, but you did bring up a coupl good points though.
Rating rise..Basketball pull in better numbers than baseball..Baseball has most of the summer months all to itself. And the numbers are still dismal..But if Basketball goes into a lockout for over a year..It'll have a much harder time recuperating than football and baseball,if they did the same thing......
Some teams are still feeling the effects of the last lockout...
Its Laughable that you would suggest that the players union will agree to having players playing on non guaranteed contracts...There are 14 new owners in the nba since the last lockout..And owners are paying 3 times more than their counterparts did in the 90's....They wouldnt risk their investments on the chance of getting sued if players are injured..
When was the player's union ever mentioned? You're the only one to bring up the player's union Rudeboy. I was talking in general. Hooked on phonics works for dimwits!!
^^Dude, your the dimwit...Nobody will agree to that BS you're Suggesting....its INSANE To ever POST THAT BS
It's insane to ask if the NBA has a worse salary structure than the MLB or NFL? Learn to read then post something. It's not like I'm rallying the troops here I was asking what people thought.
How does someone as ignorant as you remember that you need to breath to live???? I would have thought you'd forget that right after birth. It's a miracle you've made it this far!!!!
LMAO^ At the pennypacker
Easy there ladies, you wouldn't want to break a nail.
you might be too young to remember when NBA games were played on tape delay..Even the Finals were shown after the late local news..But by the mid 80's nba basketball started to boom..and baseball went down in the eyes of television viewers..Then the Lakers signed Magic to that huge deal, that opened alot of people eyes and bought more attention to the league..soon every owner wanted to sign their players to major deals..Unlike football and baseball Some nba players are more marketable & bigger than their teams, in a way..That why the nba salaries got out of hand...You cant blame players for getting what they can...
Shouldn't be guaranteed. they should use the NFL salary scale
I said abstractly would it help the league's PR if they had a salary structure more like the MLB or NFL.
If I gave you a bus schedule would you do the world a favor and make sure to step infront of one? Bigger question would you be able to follow it? They are kind of difficult to read probably at a 4th grade level.
pennypacker why do u keep giving yourself a point after you post something?
I recognize you now. You're the reason no child left behind failed. No one could offset your test scores!!!
you worthless bunt
Forget 1 point, if you ask me, he is on 3 different account, giving himself thumbs up and others thumbs down.
When I saw this thread 5 minutes after it was posted, TOL23 had 3 negs and Penny had 3 positives, coincidence?
And I advise you not to give yourself a point everytime. If you ask me, it makes you lose credibility for your work, and If people notice you do that, they will give you negs.
(For the record I haven't negged you once, in fact a gave you a coupld points.
WTF are you talking about? Better phrasing please because I hope you don't consider this work.
Yeah thats pretty obvious (three neg's and three pos)
your post, work, same thing! Stop nitpicking!
Thank you Cward.
Notice how a bunch of Rudeboy's posts have 3 negs.
Thanks Edward R. Murrow you're an American Icon. Seriously you'll lose credibility on an anonymous internet forum?
In the right light you look like a retard? No wait that's all the time. NM
Dude, I am not even negging you and your acting as we are all against you. You act like a b!tch one more time and I'll get my goons after you!
Eat a dikkk Opie
fyi theres 4 major sports in the U.S.
Hockey is a bunch of neanderthals skating around on some ice.
Not gauranteed sh*t. The race crap, step aside. NBA owners would love to strip guarenteed contracts so that players and those who depend on them for a living can fall in line with all the other disproportionatley poor people. One blown knee and that dough is dust. It would help the league financially, it will not, help keep players in the league. Players must be secured first, then willing to SACRIFICE themselves for the sake of entertainment; and to do so without any guarantee of compensastion seems utterly senseless. The NBA would definitely hurt it's PR image. Who cares about that? PR personality and contracts don't come through the television, nor does it get in the way of the game once the ball is tossed in the air. Guarantee this, non-guaranteed contracts will kill the NBA and any hope of PR.
Thats why they need to go the football way. give the bonus and have the contract non-Guaranteed so if they decide to become Eddy Curry or suck like Darko they wont get paid( other than the bonus, make it in between 3-10 million depending on what the player has accomplished)
Teams can have options on contracts so can players so it works both ways and several players have buyouts in their contracts for example Vince Carter this year and Chauncy Billups before NY took up his option. Rookie deals are only guaranteed for two years just ask Joe Alexander who was an 8th pick but his 3rd year option was not picked up.
There are 12 posts in this thread with at least 1 point, and 11 of then are Penny Packer's.
@aamir he just lost like 11 points from me just now! LOL
Nah, its all good, I don't care if you neg him, but thanks. (But give me the points!)
lmao! i did! but i took a few from him! i cant stand when people cant come up with a good argument so they call you a retard??!?!? i always neg people like that
"Forget 1 point, if you ask me, he is on 3 different account, giving himself thumbs up and others thumbs down.
When I saw this thread 5 minutes after it was posted, TOL23 had 3 negs and Penny had 3 positives, coincidence?"
Yeah, I thought that too!! Glad I'm not the only one that caught it!
While you're at it, give everyone else a point, poor Cward got negged for speaking the truth. smh,smh
