Who do you choose?
I'm going with one of these two..the Jazz who are going to rely heavily on young inexperienced players and have a rookie PG that was not up to par in summer league I know that doesn't say much but could be a bad sign.
The Philadelphia 76ers whose best player is Evan Turner..that tells you right there that they aren't very good..they are also going to have to rely on Michael Carter-Williams and Nerlens Noel (who is showing no sign of being ready for the start of the season) to carry the load.
True they will be young and they will be inexperienced but worst in the league no. Being a Jazz fan I think they will have a great starting line up after a bit of seasoning. I am assuming the starting line up will be Burke, Burks, Hayward, Favors and Kanter. They wont have anymore vets ahead of them retarding their growth. But hey if there is a year to some growing pains this is that year.
btw i just ran a scenario where they were the worst team in the league, average starting line up of 22 years old, got wiggins in the draft and signed Lebron with all their salary cap! Fan boy I know, but 1 year sucking could be very good! but hey its Utah so....
Thaddeus Young is the best player for the Sixers. Not Evan Turner
I was just about to say that myself. Thad is clearly the best Sixer now that Holiday is gone. Turner might not even be the second best Sixer and that is saying something considering he is competing with the likes of Spencer Hawes and Jason Richardson.
Lebron isn't coming to Utah. Plus all that cap space they will have is a myth Hayward and Favors are getting raises next offseason. me personally I would like to see them be very aggressive at the trade deadline with all those expiring contracts and try and get another draft pick this year.
Lebron would NEVER go to Utah. I could still see the Bucks, Magic, Suns, and Kings being just as bad if not worse than the Jazz or 76ers. It is probably a toss up between those teams. I think the Celtics will be pretty bad as well. The worst in my opinion is the Celtics if Rondo doesn't come back.
Utah can renew both Hayward and Favours this summer, then Kanter can be renewed next summer, if these 3 guys get market level deals then that takes around $30 million off the cap space going forward. It will be interesting to see who Utah uses the 5 year deal on. I'd assume they will look to renew the guys ASAP as if Kanter or Favours have a great out year then their value increases and having lost Millsap and Jefferson they really have to keep this young core.
As a Suns fan, I think we will struggle again next season, Scola has gone, Beasley is on his way out, Len will be on a big learning up curve, Bledsoe will give us spark but we seem to be looking to rebuild via the draft and could maybe move Gortat to a play off team, so I don't see us being any better next season.
Evan Turner IS our best player, Thad Young is just our hardest worker and a mismatch Sf/Pf, I love Thad Young but he can't do all the things Turner can with the ball in his hands...
That being said, Turner is wildly inconsistent, and we'll be reliant on MCW/Noel/Royce and Arnett Moultrie to play significant minutes this year, Spencer hawes is still a sieve on Defense and we're looking at the Monster Class in 2014 to save us, not to mention we will have MAX CAP space next summer too, It could be a quick turnaround if Turner/MCW/Noel and Royce show us what they really have, Thad Young should be traded for another Lottery pick or a young stretch 4
The 76ers will finish near the bottom, Wiggins, Randle or Parker would slide in perfectly next year and the Cap space should be used to lure a Star or 2 to come play with him...
Thad Young can't do all the things that Turner can do with the ball but he is still their best player and it isn't that close. Thad played strictly Power Forward last season and was more valuable than Josh Smith, Paul Milsap and Zach Randolph. He had a PER of 18.27 and was one of just 30 players in the league with an Estimated Wins Added # in double digits.
Evan Turner had a PER of 12.16 and Estimated Wins Added of 2.4. He was barely better than Nick Young and compared to players like Jordan Crawford and Jason Terry. Turner might have some untapped potential yet but he isn't even close to Thad young when it comes to being the Sixers best player.
Suns will be the worse team, at least I'm hoping in order to get a top 3 pick. Bledsoe will show his true colors, Gortat will be traded midway through the season, possibly Butler as well, Len will prove to be a bust, the Morris twins aren't getting any taller or longer, but Goodwin will get minutes to start going through the necessary growing pains to eventually become a steal in the draft. (This is how I envision the season going)
@Scarecrow Sixers are in BIG trouble if they're relying on anything from Royce White
I'd say it's a tie between the 76ers and the Suns. The Suns have more upside but 6ers have worse competition. I'll be surprised if one of those two aren't in the top 3 this draft.
sixers... they waited sooooooo long to hire their coach. They got rid of all their players (even young prospects !) to get draft picks and I think Thad' Young and Evan Turner will be traded during the season to get draft picks.
They WANT to lose...
Turner should be a part of the Team going forward if he improves this year, we'll need a Do It All G/F when we draft Wiggins or Parker anyway
MCW and Noel have big time potential, but will they be able to reach that potential by 2015(Their 3rd year in the league and Wiggins'/Parker's 2nd year)
I think Royce White could be very special if he gets his mind right, I know that's a lot to ask and count on...He's just so strong and talented with the ball in his hands, I hope he gets out his own way...
If we part with Thad Young we'll have enough cap room to sign anybody we want In the Summer of 2014, I don't know who'll be a Free Agent but you could you imagine them playing with a Wiggins/Parker or Randle???
Sure they weren't great last year but they do still have some talent on that Roster
Dragic and Bledsoe could be a very good backcourt, Bledsoe is a bulldog on d and Dragic is super under rated, they just got a proven Sg/Sf in Caron Butler and the Morris twin despit their size had an amazing summer league, they are getting better by the day IMO, Gortat may be traded away but they have Alex Len to play with for 30-40 games, he's not going to be a Bust, he can be Brook Lopez 2.0, who knows...
Archie Goodwin gets too much love on this site, yes he's a great athlete and he's exiting in transition but he's got no real skill at this point, he'll be in the D League most of the year...
I failed to include their most talented player Micheal Beasley because he's such a mystery going forward, although I still have faith in his offensive ability I've given up on him ever becoming a great overall basketball player, sad day for a Beasley fan...
The Suns have talent, they just happen to play in the Western Conference and the Top 11 teams are could make the playoffs in the East, it's likely they end up in the bottom 5 of the overall standings along with my 76ers...
Raptors and Kings
Not sure how Toronto is in this conversations. Definately not going to be anything more than mediocre. But thinking they will be the worst team in the league seems unrealistic.
Can a case be made for the LA Lakers? At least the Kobe-less La Lakers look like the worst team in the NBA
C P. Gasol
Even without Kobe Mike D'Antoni's style will have them winning at least 30 games because they will run and play at least 10 deep. People forget that D'Antoni was knocked for not winning in the playoffs because most of his teams did well enough in the regular season.
And say the Kings!
As a Sixers fan, this season will be a failure if we do not finish with the worst record in the NBA.
Kings. McLemore will be chucking all year, and Cousins is a ticking time bomb. Plus, they are in the West which is the tougher conference. I don't see where the leadership will be with that team.
As a celtics fan it pains me to say it, but if Rondo doesn't play (or comes back mid-season at less than 100%) it might be Boston. They have a few decent young pieces (Bradley, Green, Sully, Olynyk) but none of those guys will ever be more than a 3rd option on a good team. They also might have the worst rim protection in the league, as their best shot blocker is probably Gerald Wallace (gasp) and he hasn't been good for a few years.
Their perimeter D will be pretty good, especially with Stevens at coach, but you need to be able to score to win in this league. I'm confident Jeff Green will be the teams leading scorer, and thats not good, not good at all.
With a healthy Rondo all year, they could make a run at an 8 seed, he's that good. Unfortunately he's not very healthy, and an 8th seed is about the worst thing you can be in the NBA.
Without a healthy Rondo, Stevens and Ainge (whether they say it publicly or not) will be in full tank mode. Full tank mode on a Rondo-less celtics team could mean something like a 22-60 record.
Ill take the 22-60 celtics over the 42-40 celtics any day, especially in 2014...
PS: Does anyone know anything about Victor Faverini? Im not expecting much at all, but does he bring anything to the table for the '13-'14 celtics?
lakers (without kobe)
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Bobcats
After the Al Jefferson signing and Cody Zeller drafting - they can't be the worst team in the league. They weren't even the worst last year and they should get much better.
I'd be pretty surprised if Milwaukee ends up with a top 5 pick in this year's draft. I don't think they'll be THAT bad unless Sanders or Ilyasova get hurt.
