I’ve gone back and forth so many times on which way the Wolves should go with this pick. It looks the the core moving forward will be KAT, Wiggins, Lavine, Rubio, Bazz, and Gorgui. I think Tyus could become an average back up PG in the league and want to see Bjelica with a season where he is used properly. I think he could be a serviceable stretch big off the bench. With all that in mind I think you have to factor need in somewhat even though you still want to go BPA that high. I think the two biggest needs are a starting PF that can compliment KAT (Gorgui’s played well at the 4 this year, but I’d prefer him as the 1st big off the bench) and another scoring guard to come off the bench. Earlier in the year I was thinking Rabb but it seems like a reach now according to most mock drafts. Jamal Murray or Buddy would be interesting and either one would provide much improved scoring in the backcourt off the bench. If Bender was there I’d take him in a heartbeat, but I don’t think he will be. Other than that I don’t think I’d want any of the other guys I’ve seen going to them in mock drafts. Ellenson and Sabonis would be interesting fits but that seems like such a reach to me for guys that I think could be solid players but not great ceilings. Of the guys that will probably be there I’d go Buddy, Rabb, Murray but I would be happy with any of the three. Who would you take at 5 if you were the Wolves assuming Simmons, Ingram, Bender, And Dunn are all gone? BPA or fit?

You definitely have to go fit. Bcuz some people r saying jaylen is up there for best available but i would definitely not take him for the twolves with wiggins and bazz. I would probably go buddy or murray for a solid 2 off the bench and then mayb sabonis or ellenson. So i actually agree strongly with what snowta said^

I would personally trade down for a couple of the Nuggets picks(I think it’s unlikely they keep four picks) With them I wouls take Skal and Wade Baldwin. Teams are scared to take Skal high but he could easily be the steal of the draft.

I made a post about this before and after these very encouraging past few months by the Wolves to end the season, I think I will stand by my opinion that they should consider trading the pick for a peak/not that old veteran to fill one (or more) of their needs. They could either trade it before drafting or before. It’s very hard to develop so many young players all at once without creating any conflict in playing time, roles, salaries, extensions, etc. They already have a very good young core as is and I’m pretty sure most of them will take even another step next year and these guys will be carrying the franchise over the next decade or so. They will be ready to be a playoff threat and I think drafting a solid role player to fill their needs will do more to help their cause than getting another young player who may not pan out.

I completely agree with you. They have to make Pekovic, Rubio and that draft pick available for trade in my opinion. Then, sign a better coach with a more modern approach to the game. They have youth and talent.

The Wolves would do well to add a smart well rounded player like Sabonis.  If he has half the career of his dad he will have a nice career.

I really don’t know if Rubio will be part of their future nucleas. He is good, but if they can upgrade at that position, then go for it. Getting another solid big like Sabonis is always good as well.

Assuming they are picking in that 4-7 range, Dunn is my guy still.

The team is a year removed from Rubio missing 50-some games. I don’t want Tyus Jones being pushed into a main role. Thats horrifying.

I know Rubio has played well lately but he’s still got 4+ years of horrible shooting and hasn’t improved. Even so, he’s played well. But the bench has killed them lately. Get a guy like Dunn who can run that second unit and learn on the job. If Rubio continues to play well, you’ve got a good problem on your hands. If Rubio gets hurt or struggles, Dunn would be ready to step into a starting role.

Draft Dunn, sign a 3 and D guy like Jared Dudley and sign a 4 man like a Terrance Jones and you’ve got a nice lil squad.

    Rubio-Dunn

    Lavine-Dudley

    Wiggins-Shabazz

    Jones-Bjelica

    KAT-Dieng

Think that team can get 45 wins or more if healthy

I say draft best available, looking back at past drafts, passing on and trading Brandon Roy because we had McCants, the same with Ray Allen because we had Rider. I realize those are a stretch back into time but don’t pass up on an all star to have fill a role players spot. With that said I assume Murray would be the best available, he can play 1G or 2G,LaVine and Murray together would be a great duo, and still have Wiggins and KAT. He would also help the 2nd unit a lot.

I agree another big to ease the minutes for Deng and KAT would be nice. With that being said if Thon Maker is available do we take him?

That would be very interesting. Thon has been compared to KG, and if KG stays on the staff or something he could take him under his wing. That might actually be best case scenario for Thon

Ingram…… but outside of that I would go Shooters…… You have Wiggens & KAT who are both gonna be stars…. Both are great athletes who can run the floor in a fast paced offense……

But you can’t ignore how the League has Evolved since the early 2000’s……. Ever since the Zone Defense was Legalized after the 2001/02′ season…… The Value of the 3point Shooter has Exploded…… KAT is an outsanding shooter for a Big…. but Wiggins is not a great shooter & neither is Lavine……..

So some great 3 point Shooters would give you guys some Great spacing & that would Multiply the Value of Uber Athletes like Wiggins & Lavine…….. So I would go w/ Jamal Murray or Buddy Hield…….

I like Kriss Dunn in general but he’s Not a good fit for Minnesota…..  You will have 3 starters trying to drive to the Rim & the Defense will just pacjk it in a Zone & force bad to average shooters to shoot over them…..

I see your point and agree some more shooting would be valuable, but I’d say Zach is a very good shooter for a 21 year old. He’s shooting 39% from 3 and could still improve on his shot selection which you’d think would only improve his 3pt %.

ill consider trading the pick as well. Maybe package it with Rubio if they dont want to keep him. Imagine if they win the lottery again and get a chance to grab Simmons who would be perfect with this team. IDK they really dont need another scorer, they have already have Lavine, Wiggins, and KAT, adding another scorer will just mess everything up. If they keep the pick they could possibly look at bender, but i would either trade down and get more picks and pile up assets

Buddy or Murray, I’m torn. I think Murray has more potential, but Buddy is coming in as a veteran rookie 4 years at Oklahoma and turned into a leader that brought his squad to the final four. I like either of them at this pick. Really comes down to how long they think itll take murray to develope. We cant keep getting young guys that arent ready to compete, at some point in time which I hope is now, we gotta take the step forward to play for now. Also just a hunch but I think the wolves are gona get a top 3 pick in the lottery.

Couldn’t agree more and that’s why I lean buddy because I think he can contribute right away. Question, 1 or 2 you obviously go Ingram or Simmons but if they’re 3 do you go Bender? I think that’s who I’d want.

A shooter at power forward is best fit.

There are shooting guards for them, but that would mean LaVine is the 6th Man, or Rubio is traded and Zach moves there.

KAT does have range, but he can also score inside and someone at power forward with long range ability would make it easy for him and Wiggins.

I disagree because with that logic you would take buddy hield or jamal murray over zach lavine….If Lavine is in this draft with everything we’ve seen from him in the NBA I’d go as far as to say he’s a lock for the #3 pick..

They already have the core of the team built, they just need role players to come off the bench to be ready and bring firepower. I would take Buddy.

     Really interesting situation-great topic.

my take? Two options: trade up, or trade out.

i’d love to see Simmons here if they won the draft, and I wouldn’t complain about a shooter like Ingram or held either. But aside from them, I don’t think I see anyone else that moves the needle, and they need to give their other young guys the best possible chance to develop.

instead, I’d look to find a point guard or stretch 4 with a package built around Rubio and their pick – maybe Bledsoe. Alternatively – I’d be tempted to offer it to Philly for saric+1/2 lower first rounders. I’d probably use the lower firsts on a backup shooting guard, a backup pg or a euro stash (I think the international class is actually quite underrated this year)

Last question – if they end up with the 5th pick – do you think adding lavine would be enough to move up into the top two? A front court of towns, Wiggins and either Ingram or Simmons would be scary…

      Probably not.

Its not that the deal would be unfair….its just hard to move teams off what they already have if they aren’t already keen on moving down. A GM will lose his job if Simmons or Ingram becomes an MVP…but won’t lose his job if he simply doesnt make the deal.

It becomes a situation where you have to make an offer they cant refuse…

I think they go with fit ideally someone who can play PF and some SF or possibly an SG/SF this is assuming they pick at around 5th/6th or a bit lower. If they land top 3 and miss out on Simmons or Ingram it becomes interesting and possibly Rubio comes into play.

I’d say Bender, Brown, Sabonis in no particular order.

I think they’ll go Jamal if they land a top 5 pick (which they have a good chance to do), however if their pick slips to 7th or higher…I’d go Buddy. I think his ceiling is lower than the other younger prospects, but his ability to shoot of one or two dribbles is tops in the draft and a good fit for the Wolves. I think he’s the black J.J. Redick more so than James Harden (his NBADraft.Net comparison). See my article at: ballitics.weebly.com

    1. Maker (Giannis A.)
    2. Simmons (Lamar Odom)
    3. Brandon Ingram (Rudy Gay/Paul George)
    4. Kris Dunn (Damien Lillard/Reggie Jackson)
    5. Jamal Murray (Bradley Beal)
    6. Jaylen Brown (Jimmy Butler)
    7. Domatas Sabonis (Chris Bosh/Troy Murphy)
    8. Dejounte Murray (J.R. Smith)
    9. Buddy Hield (Klay Thompson/J.J. Redick)
    10. Malik Beasley (Demar DeRozan/Emmanuel Mudiay)
