Saunders has been slow playing this whole thing and I think that he’s in a really good position at this point.  If Lebron had gone back to Miami there wouldn’t be as many opportunities for a Love trade but now that there is known interest between Cleveland and Love, will Golden State step up and make Klay available?  As a long time Wolves fan I am use to seeing them get pennies on the dollar in return but I’m hopeful that they finally get good trade value.  If Love goes to Cleveland then Wiggins has to be part of the trade and if he goes to GSW then Thompson has to be part of the trade.

If I am Cleveland, maybe I just sign Ray Allen, sign Pau Gasol as a 7 footer who can score, rebound, and block shots at either big man spot, and then resign Luol Deng as a perfect do-it-all glue guy off the bench.

Sign those three veterans to give minutes, points, and leadership, and keep ALL those young guys (TT, Bennett, Waiters, and Wiggins).

I will take LeBron with shooters and slashers on the outside, rebounding bangers (Andy V and TT) and post scoring (Pau) on the inside.

Not so sure I wouldn’t rather have a crunch time, smaller lineup of Irving, Waiters, Wiggins, LeBron, and Pau.

Who will stop a big front line of LeBron, Pau, and Andy V?

If the Cavs wanted to go after a stretch four then maybe they go out and get Rashard Lewis?

The Cavs could be absolutely LOADED next season even without Kevin Love.

    1) Lebron said he knows it takes time to win

    2) Love said he will sign a long term deal with cleveland

Both Cleveland and Golden state are going to make the playoffs.  Love will still be available at the trade deadline and free agency next year.

So what if Love gets traded to somewhere else.  He only provides a better chance at the championship.  Is giving up wiggins or klay worth that half a season of Love?

There is known interest in Kevin Love to go to Cleveland and that he is willing to sign a long term deal. For this reason alone other team won’t be inclined to deal for one to a half a season of Love because of the known mutual interest between the parties. If I’m Cleveland, I make an offer or I just wait until the trade deadline at which point they’ll (Minny) be desperate. Subtly, Kevin Love has told every team but Cleveland, I won’t sign with you after this season. What team would give up assets knowing that piece of information?

hahaha…minny is in a horrible spot.  cleveland is in the drivers’ seat on this one.  they already won by getting lebron.  now, they can sit and see what free agents are willing to sign for cheap to play with lebron.  they also have $15M in team options they can use.  they could go after a monroe or a gasol and keep all their assets.

once kevin love said he’s opting out, minny should of jumped the gun on the first team to take k-mart’s contract and called it a win.

I want Kevin Love for the three Canadians..

Cleveland:  Kevin Love, JJ Barea, Ronny Turiaf…(JJ and Ronny have championship experience and are FA after this year)

Minnesota:  Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, Tristan Thompson, future protected first round pick..

What teams has Kevin Love told he won’t resign with? Pretty sure he said Chicago and Golden State are his preferred destinations when this whole trade talk started. Not to mention the whole tour through Boston.  I don’t think that he is zeroed in on Cleveland at all.   Either way, the wolves are the ones with the asset that everyone wants and that’s Kevin Love so they can bide their time and trade him for the best offer. No team is going to trade for Love and give up assets without an assurance that he would resign with them. If you Cleveland, Golden State, Chicago, etc. and you want Love, you are going to have to trade for him and you are going to have to give up valuable assets to get him.

I guess playing with a solidly composed team and the best basketball player in the world is easily trumped by going to teams such as the Celtics, Warriors or Bulls. At best Minny has until the trade deadline to make a marginal deal, after that the team gets absolutely NOTHING! Minny knows it and so does the rest of the league. Please explain how a team that has a player that wants to win AND get paid as an UFA is in a position of power?

as an aside: Love to the Bulls, Celtics or Warriors sounded like cool alternatives until Lebron left Miami. If anyone trades more than a 2nd for Love (no indication of his true value) at this point is foolish knowing the Minny is going to lose him now or later, it’s just by how much.

The Wolves aren’t in a good position right now.  Everyone knows they are desperate to deal Love.  He already said he isn’t resigning, and gave the Wolves organization the courtesy to let them know.  Minnesota isn’t going to get equal value in return.  Why would teams give up the house for a guy a team is desperate to trade?  The Wolves will get a similar return to what Orlando got for Howard.  I don’t see them getting much more than that.  When every single team knows you’re in a position where it’s trade him or lose him for nothing, teams aren’t going to offer much.

If a team wants Kevin Love, they are going to have to offer a lot in order to get him right now and ensure they keep him off the open market.  Yes, he isn’t going to sign with the Wolves long term, but if you allow him to reach free agency, you allow multiple teams to be in his ear and we’ve seen how unpredictable free agency can be. His unwillingness to sign with Minnesota doesn’t matter at this point. The fact is that he is still on the Wolves roster for another 11 months, and if a team like Golden State or Cleveland want to ensure he doesn’t hit free agency, they are going to have to offer a lot to get him on their roster before then.

Sorry friend, but it’s obvious you are thinking with your emotions as a Minnesota fan. I have no dog in this fight, I’m a 76ers fan. What I and many others on this forum realize is that although we are entertained by the athleticsm, it is ultimately a business. Business is predicated upon maximizing your return on investment at all cost.

If I had a widget you needed and you knew that you needed this widget, however getting it sooner rather than later will not change your bottom line, do you purchase it now at an exorbant cost? Do you wait 6 months until you can get said widget at a deep discount or 11 months and get it without giving up assets? If you choose to pay now, I got a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you.

Your lesson in economics makes complete sense if Minnesota and Cleveland were the only two teams in the NBA.  If Cleveland doesn’t include Wiggins in a trade, Minnesota will trade Kevin Love elsewhere. That team will not trade for a Kevin Love rental, they will ensure Kevin Love commits long term before giving up assets to get him. Cleveland then loses out on Kevin Love which brings me back to the point that if Cleveland wants Kevin Love, they have to include Andrew Wiggins.  Loves motive by saying he won’t sign an extension in Minnesota is not so he can test the free agent market, but so that they are forced to trade him to a market and a team he wants to go to.

And what are you talking about? While we are all entertained by the athleticism, it is ultimately a business? What does that even mean?

Honestly, I don’t doubt they can make a trade. The problem is what they’ll get in return for the trade. All teams in the league know that Minny is desperate because their star player doesn’t want to be there and that at season’s end, he can walk free and clear. That alone does not incentivize a team to overpay or in some case, even bother to pay market value. While Love wants to be traded sooner than later, I’m sure he is fine waiting until after the season to pick exactly where he wants to go. In some ways, the circumstances are yeilding a situation where there is a "no trade" clause. By merely saying I won’t sign long term, no team is going to give Minnesota fair exchange for him, thus allowing him to choose where he goes.

That statement was just an emphasis that sometimes we as fans get lost in the game, when owners and managers look at it assets, liabilities and renumeration for services. –just business
